Not bothered by him leaving, never did enough to become a potential favourite, nor anything wrong to become a figure of ridicule or disdain. Wish him well for his future career and hope we have a massive sell on clause when he becomes a top player in Dubai.

Cucho wanting to go and play in a retiremnet league at this stage of his career says a lot about his charactor. It is simply down to money and a lack of ambition and for that reason I think we are best of taking the money.

The Edwards Way? Nothing so complicated, it is just a variation of this of course...

Agreed would of loved him to stay but not if his hearts not in it. But we are desperately short of numbers up top now. Surely they have players lined up.

Whatever you think about the brilliance/travesty of selling Cucho for $10m-£10m, surely we can all agree: tweeting a teaser video days before any official announcement is proper window-licker behaviour from Colombus Crew

He'll probably be more visible to the Colombian national team than if he stayed in the Championship, plus it's a more familiar environment culturally, even if the standard of football is more L1 level, I think he's sleeping just fine. Besides, he could get a move back to Spain in a year or so if he does well

I think it'd be more worth our while to stretch a bit more and get Gyokeres, I think his ceiling is slightly higher.

MLS isn't a retirement league any more (except for a few "marquee" stars). It's a development and selling league. It's a win-win for him. He gets to start every day, get into the national team and if he scores significant goals, he can move back to Europe in a year or two for more money. If he doesn't, he got decent money now.

Which is an important caveat because we all know that any fees are going to be pissed away on utter dross from Bayat in positions we dont need and then the actual squad building will be done with Udinese rejets.

Its why I will criticise the sale of almost any good player unless the fee is bonkers because I have absolutely no faith in the ownership to adequately replace.

Look at what we did with the proceeds of the Richarlison and Lukebakio sales.

I really don't get why so many people think being motivated by money is something to beat footballers over the head with. Offer me 3 times my wages for easier work and I'd leave my job too, and unlike footballers I can expect a 40+ year career. 3 years at triple the wage is a big deal when your prime career earning period will last less than 10 years.

Plus I think there's a big difference between going to play in somewhere like the Middle East, and going to play in the US, he's probably got more of a chance to get into the Colombia team in the US compared to the Middle East or even the Championship

And how much will he cost? I feel Davis for £4/5m is pushing it in terms of our budget, I don't see us getting someone for the kind of fees we're selling Cucho for

The only possible reason this is true is if the national team in question is doing one of their 'only call American continent-based players for a less important round of fixtures squad' moves, but I do at the same time agree that it's not the same thing as moving to Saudi/Qatar/etc, and, indeed, that the idea of MLS as a 'retirement league' is severely outdated.

Even if they do that, I don't think a player like Cucho can afford to miss any opportunities, it's not like he's been a regular for them at all

No, you're right, it's perfectly true that he might see an extra few percent of opportunity in that. The question might be whether the level of MLS counteracts that, but then again the level of the Championship doesn't greatly boost it.

Agreed. Seems like people are trying to convince themselves to make them feel better about him leaving. He's had three pretty average loans in the top flight in Spain, two of them ending in relegation. That's probably his level - struggling teams in good leagues so I wouldn't put it down to a lack of ambition. From a national team perspective, he'll have far more exposure in the US, there are loads of Colombians playing in that league, including several up and coming younger players.

There were two young stars at Envigado, Yaser Asprilla is coming to us and Jhon Duran has gone to Chicago Fire. Be interesting to see who's made the better move and whose club manages their development better...

There is an enormous gap in quality between the bottom of the top flight and MLS. The clubs towards the bottom of MLS, like Columbus, would struggle in the championship. It is improving, but still an awful league. Dion Periera got game time at one of their best clubs and has since spent the last 2 years struggling to get into the side for Yeovil and Bradford.

I have no idea how to find it now, but I recall that Cucho himself gave an interview where he wondered how someone from MLS could get called up over any player playing in the European leagues. By his own admission he is sacrificing his own international ambitions.

I have no issue with players moving for money / family etc, but this move is a step down in a footballing perspective. Id say the same whether he was leaving Watford or any other club.

I don’t necessarily think it’s really lack of ambition, maybe he’s just being realistic about his ability. Is he ever going to win silverware in a top tier European league? Highly doubtful. So what would he actually realistically be able achieve, is playing for a mid table Spanish side something amazing to tell the grandkids compared to playing in America instead? So instead he gets to play much closer to home and treble his salary

Is playing for a mid-table side in America more amazing than playing for a mid-table side in Spain?!

They won MLS cup just the year before last, but at the same time, you probably have to unpack that into two distinct parts - the 'winning', and the 'something'.

No it isn’t, but my point was I don’t think he’s sacrificing winning anything in Europe as he’s realistically probably a lower/mid Spanish league player and a lower PL league player. So he gets to tick two boxes of proximity to home (relatively speaking) and a higher salary compared to staying in Europe, with the trade off of maybe missing out on playing at a mid table European team, but very probably never winning a thing either. I don’t really see it as a lack of ambition as I don’t think he’s actually sacrificing much on that front. If we think he can play for Real or Barcelona fair enough, but that seems fairly unlikely.

Nothing announced by either club, but the front page of MLS' official website looks like this, currently:

    upload_2022-6-21_11-38-47.png

MLS secondary transfer window doesn't open until July 7th, and they'll have to be squaring the designated player stuff with the league/finances, so that may all factor in to any delay.
