No chance, the reality was a we only had to overhaul one team to get into the playoffs and we already had the same amount of points as them. This time round we need to better 4 teams ahead of us, and as an absolute minimum overhaul 6 points on one of them, whilst bettering the results of the other 3 as well, who are already ahead of us.

Points in the bag are always better than games in hand, so teams below us having games in hand was largely irrelevant.

What a truly brilliant time that was. Great fun.

Just a matter of opinion of course, but we only really had one team in range at that point given the 8 point gap to 5th place, and two teams below us who were better placed than us to get 6th. Points in the bag are good but I'd prefer to be one point behind a team with 2 games in hand , or 4 points behind with 4 games in hand.

As @LondonOrn posted, after the next 2 draws we were actually 7 points below 6th at the start of that famous run. Before last nights games 4th 5th and 6th were all within 2 wins range of us.

Doesn't matter anyway given we aren't going to go on the required winning run, and last nights results didn't help !

I guess a lot will depend on the next 2 games, if we also draw those two then we’ll be a lot more than 7 points behind 6th. Our position being better now assumes we win the next two which is far from certain.

It was beating Tranmere with 9 men that started the run. Some impressive looking attendances!!

I looked further into that to find out what point Wolves started dropping points to let us in, and actually on the day we beat Tranmere Wolves won again and Bolton who were miles ahead of us and had a game in hand drew - not a dissimilar scenario to last night but with fewer games left to play! Epic though the Tranmere game was, did anyone after it seriously think we’d even make the play-offs with Birmingham (a), Bolton (h) and ex-Prem sides Palace (h) and Barnsley (a) still to play?

I haven't seen anything about the Rookery singing the Troy song in the 90th minute. I thought that was really nice.

Reminded me of when John McClelland, our Player of the Year and one of our best ever, was bringing the ball out of defence and was fouled from behind by a Bournemouth player (very different Bournemouth in those days). Did the crowd abuse our opponent? No, they chanted "Luther, Luther!" for it was he.

I used to enjoy going there in fairness. Unlike the dog Kennel and the absolutely pitiful Vetch.

Could honestly see Deeney getting involved at some point. It looks like Dre has been coaching shooting practice all season tbf.

I disagree with this entirely - Britt's initial shot was in target, but the keeper was so close to him by the time the ball reached him that there was basically no room where the ball would have been on target without first hitting the keeper.

It was thus fortunate and amusing that the ball then bounced back off the keeper and on to Britt again sending it goalwards, but that has nothing to do with Britt not having done anything wrong to begin with.

Nope. He was long gone when we won 4-0 there right at the end of that season. The last time we lost at Oxford was in 1969 (even before my time).

I’m sure the image of a huge plastic great white shark crashing through the roof of an urban landlocked terraced house immediately conjures up very strong and vivid anti war sentiment  in all passing motorists.

I’m an eternal optimist but have written this season off.
To catch up 6 points and goal difference and rely on all the chasing pack above us to fall away is a very long stretch.

But … one game at a time and playing at 120% and magically finding someone to regularly fill the onion bag and the players suddenly changing their attitude and no more injuries and the moon turning pink, then who knows …

Deeney being involved in the coaching setup in some capacity would be great, but it would have to be something that transcends the regular hiring and firing of the head coach.

While Pozzo is owner there is no point letting him anywhere near the head coach position, or having him as some sort of assistant to a specific coach, it would be a sure fire way to ruin his legacy here. The chances of just parachuting him and in it being a success (in terms of what Pozzo would expect at least) are sadly slim to none, so really would anyone want that?

He would really have to go off and be a big success elsewhere for it to even stand a chance of not ending in tears for everyone, and even then it probably still would.

Deeney would be far too open and honest for someone like Pozzo !

BTW what happened to that @Moosegasm who really didn’t like Troy ?

What was Deeney's relationship like with the Pozzos? It mustn't have been too bad considering he was the main man for yonks, long after he passed his prime

Indeed, a very risky road for everyone involved. I’m sure there’s plenty of Deeney fans left that any screwing him around would result in it being the absolute final straw for them.

And I can’t imagine Troy would be quiet about things at a press conference either.

Not as big a name as Troy of course, but when Eustace was linked with the job here in the summer there was a part of me that thought it would be a shame if he did take it as he'd be on a hiding to nothing and it would all end in tears, now imagine that, but multiplied with Deeney's even bigger status here and his personality

IMO we have to win our next two in order to give ourselves an outside chance. Beating Wigan should be achieved, but going to Luton and winning there will really send out a message. If that happens, I think fans will start believing we can somehow do it. But we’ve really given ourselves a mountain to climb now.

Well given they backed him over Ivic probably quite good but then they maybe felt if there was a falling out he might say something!

There will be a lot of people getting really cross indeed with Gino if that happens. Not Gino out of course, but there will be questions asked...

I think that the vast majority of Watford fans still love the man. Cross a club legend, like they did with Luther, and usually 99% of fans will take their side. I think sacking Deeney after 10 games after an ok but not brilliant start would be the final FINAL straw for many.

That’s why, no matter what **** he spouts on Hornet player, Mooney walks on water for me. That was one of the best eras of being a Watford fan in my lifetime.

That Tranmere game was amazing. Best home atmosphere under the lights with only a few thousand of us, angry at being reduced to 9 men. Kicked it all off.

There’s a hospital where the ground used to be, did you enter the stadium from the main road? Headington while not as nice as Iffley or Summertown would surely have made for a better match day than Littlemore.

Also didn’t we win there to achieve the great escape from the third tier? Did it with a game or two to spare, but pretty dramatic nonetheless.
