A Premier League footballer broke a woman's nose with a single punch after saying, "Don't you know who I am? I am a millionaire", a jury has been told.

Wigan Athletic striker Marlon King, 29, also "sexually touched" the woman, 20, London's Southwark Crown Court heard.

The attack in a Soho bar after she had rejected his advances was a piece of "gratuitous" violence, jurors heard.

Mr King, a married father-of-three, denies sexual assault by touching and causing actual bodily harm.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was injured by Mr King at the Soho Revue Bar in December, the court was told.

Marlon King took one step backward and smashed her in the face with a clenched fist

    Roger Daniells-Smith, prosecuting
On the night of the incident, she had been with a group of "sporty type" friends.

Another footballer and sports journalist were also there, but Mr King was not part of the group.

Describing the alleged touching by the accused, Roger Daniells-Smith, prosecuting, said: "They were complete strangers to each other.

"It was not an accidental brushing or innocent contact that occasionally happens in crowded bars. This was deliberate and sexual."

The woman responded by saying: "Don't do that, it's not nice. Don't touch me."

    Women 'recoiled'

Mr King then turned his attention to other women in the party, the court heard.

Mr Daniells-Smith said: "They, too, recoiled from his touching them and told him very clearly to stop behaving in this manner."

The prosecution alleges that Mr King simply turned his attention back to the eventual victim.

Describing that exchange, Mr Daniells-Smith said that Mr King began: "Don't you know who I am? I'm a millionaire."

The court heard that his alleged victim replied by saying: "I don't care who you are, take your millionaire self away from our table".

He was given further warnings but continued to stroke the woman's hair and then allegedly told her that she was not in his league.

After she pushed him in the chest, Mr King responded with the punch, the court was told.

Mr Daniells-Smith said: "At that moment Marlon King took one step backward and smashed her in the face with a clenched fist. He broke her nose with the blow.

"It was a completely gratuitous piece of violence against a slightly-built female.

"It was unprovoked and could not have been an act of lawful self-defence."

Mr King, who on loan at Hull City at the time, claims he has been mistakenly identified as the assailant.

    The trial continues.

Does not sound too good for him. I could see him going down for this one and if what allegedly happened is true he thoroughly deserves it.

The defence of "mistakenly identified as the assailant" is unlikely to fly if the other women in group are witnesses. He is pretty hard to misidentify!

Innocent till proven guilty and we've not heard the defence here.

    Absolutely!

I assume the statement that "Mr King, who on loan at Hull City at the time, claims he has been mistakenly identified as the assailant." comes from his Counsel's opening statement.

But as the report says "The trial continues." No doubt we'll hear his full defence shortly.

If he's found guilty there's absolutely no doubt he'll go down for a bloody long time (considering his previous)

He's 29 now... 2 years inside?? and he'll come out just in time to be rescued by Aidy all over again :]]

If there is 0.1% of doubt in the Jurors minds, he will walk away!

I hope he's found guilty! Any 'man' that resorts to violence against a woman is clearly a c**t, and a coward. Not to mention his 'boasting' of being a millionaire. What a wan*er.

He's got previous, so he may find himself biting a pillow on D-wing this Christmas.

    I do hope so.

Hornmeister's caution is fair enough but I have to agree with you. It's hard to imagine any justification for breaking a woman's nose. Although we do need to hear the defence I find it difficult to buy "mistaken identity" - he's a pretty distinctive individual. I too hope he goes down for an extended period if found guilty. I'd go further and say I hope it finishes his career.

I'm sorry, but what a ridiculous comment.

No Watford fan can doubt he was a superb player for us...he was a tw*t off the pitch...BUT his footballing ability doesn't come into any equation here! We're talking about a moron who punches women! A 'man' (if you can call him that) that had everything when he was at Watford, but has thrown it away since leaving the club...he will HOPEFULLY end up in prison for the remainder of his career.

It will be interesting to see how he can claim 'mistaken identity' and if anything was caught on cctv. Due to previous it doesn't look good for him (and if true rightly so) however I Doubt it will end his career, Lee Hughes must be in his early 30s and found a new club on release.

  16. Bubble

    Bubble Wise Oracle

True, but Lee Hughes hasn't played higher than League One since coming out, and i'd say he was a better player than King in their peak.

If King does go down for a year or two, and he comes back out, he'll find himself playing for a League One or Two side.

He had a brief spell with Blackpool last season on loan if I remember correctly. Then again I think he only played something like 3-4 games for them.

If its true and it probably is, after hearing some of the stories that were flying around about him here, when he was at Forest, he needs to be sent down for a very long time. There is no excuse for harassing a women let alone breaking her nose. Hes a piece of filth who should get a good kick in, along with his hefty sentence.

but i think alot of people are calling him a c**t because of the way he left the club not just for punching someone

He's a footballer, he'll probably get away with it, a la Steven Gerrard etc. [Obviously Barton, McCormick, Adams, Hughes exceptions to the rule].

It's trully a shame, what is it with footballers who go and waste all that talent.

Marlon King (that season) was easily one of the most gifted players ive ever seen wear the shirt. We are all guilty of taking for granted just how good he was in our promotion season, some of his goals were utterly sublime and at times IMO he was unplayable

But then he went and blew it didnt he... the way he left the club and whats happened since. We shouldnt be finding him guilty before the courts do but I really dont hold much hope for him given his track record. If he is guilty then I really do hope the time inside teaches him the lesson he so very clearly needs. As bubble said, there's never any excuse for smacking a woman and especially in the circumstances we've heard about and he'll deserve everything he gets if found guilty.

What about the clubs CCTV? ALL nightclubs have CCTV!!

King James well said. The biggest shame is that he is a professional footballer, since he left us he has not played a lot of football, if he is found quilty and given a custonial sentence it will be a real waste of a career something he won't get back!

great player. obviously a c***. doesnt sound like the full story from her though.

However, there is no doubt that it was him who hit her and he wont get away with it even if he didnt touch her sexually and if she was being a *****. For hitting women he is a scum bag whatever way u look at it though

If Marlon did it then he deserves his punishment,it's obvious he has a short fuse and gets very frustrated when he does not get what he wants, maybe he thinks he is bigger than everyone else, and something triggers this aggression for him to do stupid things.

I don't defend him for this alleged violence, but more times than not you will see this kind of behaviour go unpunished inside and outside of pubs and clubs, and is only highlighted because of his status.I've seen mass brawls outside watford's nightclub with men and woman fighting after getting tanked up,and the police turn up,usher them off with very few arrest's because everyone's to p!ssed to say anything. This still does not excuse King, and Im not defending his alleged actions.

I can't comment on it as we don't know the facts. (I like the way others have said the same and then decided to judge anyway though!).

CCTV has to be a certain standard to pass as evidence.
