Hmmmm, think he should of been loaned out again personally but we have got first option if he turns out to be what we need in the future, £1.5 mill ish in the bank and a little bit less on the wage bill.
My academy sources say that whilst they believe Assombalonga would probably rise to the same level as Theo Robinson, they view Mensah as a better talent. We either could take the money now with a buy back clause just in case (of course he would want to come to us, he clearly loves our club) or we could risk it, with him going on loan for the next few seasons. With the Pozzo's plan, more and more players would come in front of him and he would never get a game, especially if we get to the Premiership. To get 1.5-2million for a 5th choice forward was an offer far too good to refuse.
Side note, why are so many fees 'undisclosed' now. Surely they have to report it eventually, as part of the FFP reports or end of year finances?
Not at all, I'm not saying he should be playing week in week out but the lad is only 20 ffs and clearly has ability/potential which should have seen him in the squad this season at least or out on loan at a league one club to nurture said potential. Pretty simple, really.
This makes sense to me. Unlike previous years, we have CHOSEN to sell rather than being FORCED to sell. The coaches will have assessed Britt for sure and evaluated his potential. They will have looked at whether he could be developed and sold for three or four times the couple of mill we've got from Peterboro. Obviously they've decided it's a no from them. We have to have confidence in that decision. They have enough experience of developing players. Good luck to Britt. I'm sure he'll be a star in the third division again, but doubt we'll ever see him play above championship level in the future.
So you'd rather he gets sent out on loan and is allowed to leave for free at the end of the season? We're a business, remember.
As others have said, I'm pretty relaxed about this as we have got decent money, an it would have been a tough ask for him to get in the team on any sort of regular basis. Best of luck Brit.
Well that one was a bolt out of the blue. I thought if he was going anywhere it'd have been on loan. Oh well, at least it's a decent sum, and the club have the buy-back clause in there too, just incase he continues to progress. Best of luck to Britt - I always liked his name and tracked his progress over the last few seasons when out on loan - hopefully we'll see him back in a Watford shirt in the PL one day... (May be overly optimistic on both ours and his development!)
People were saying Britt was joining P'boro on football rumours for the last week. Watford fans were ridiculing them saying that we'd never sell him and it'd only be a loan. http://www.football-rumours.co.uk/watford-rumours.php
You always like to see one of your own play but trading Assombalonga for Ikpeazu + £1.1m is good business EDIT is 2m now. Bloody good business and good for Britt as he ll imrpove a lot faster playing every week. Good for everyone imo.
On another thread we re ranting about how good Uche is. We ve just sold our 5th choice (arguably 7th) choice striker for nearly £2m !! It's never nice letting go of home grown talent and especially those who could improve so much, but we have to be honest. How much would be have played. .. personally I think Uche is going to feature a lot toward s the second half of the season. .. This is a good deal and a massive hand for the young lad.. the only negative is Peterboro is a sh!t hole
Ive heard this about Mensah too. If it werent for some injuries we might have seen more of him. He looked very sharp against Stevenage and scored last night
Weren't we also "reluctant" to sell Hogg for a profit? The Pozzos are sophisticated and experienced international investors in developing footballing talent. They're dealing with over-excited third division chairmen with a few million burning their fingers up with desire to spend. Easy meat I reckon. Yeah of course we were reluctant to sell. These guys are huge talent. We don' wanna sell but what we gonna do uh? You twist our arms up our back. You make us sell to you. There's two Z's in Pozzo on the cheque there.
How many threads on other forums will pop up saying that all our English talent is getting pushed aside in favour of foreign mercenaries?
One of those rare deals which sound like everybody leaves equally happy, good business on our part. The owners are trying to run the club in a sustainable manner so after all the signings this summer to be able to bring well over a £1m for an unproven squad player that many were talking about as going out on loan makes a lot of sense.
Chewitt, he wasn't ready this season, no way, so to say "shunted off in favour of some unkowns from Udinese" is laughable. 2m for a player who is 20/21, less of a prospect than Ikpeazu and Mensah, with a year left on his contract, AND with first refusal, by which time we'll (if all goes to plan) be in the Prem, so if he does prove to have potential to be a good PL striker, we can take up that option, and 5m ish will be comfortable for us, it's very shrewd business imo. He'll suit them very nicely and do well there I think, good luck to him.
Each player has a valuation set on him and if a club comes in and matches that valuation then it's considered. Zola gets asked whether the player is instrumental to his team and in this case he was only a fringe/development player. Basically all boxes are ticked in order to sell the player, so I can see why a deal was done. Watford get a significant transfer fee for a player that would not have featured too much this season. Peterborough have clearly paid over the odds to get him at this stage of his development, but are hoping he will be their next Dwight Gayle, which is entirely possible. Only time will tell if we've let a gem go, or we've been extremely shrewd, but the Pozzo's get more right then wrong so I back their judgement. The last two outgoing transfers have raised eyebrows but both have been reluctantly granted by the club for different reasons. Hogg so he can be close to his family and Britt because a club matched our valuation. Assombalonga may turn out to be a very good player that Palace blow £10m on in two years time, but that's the risk you take with this type of transfer. For now, £2m is a nice tide sum to help with any FFP issues further down the line, although I am personally sorry to see a talent like Assombalonga go.
Not too happy with this but if it's 2 million it could be good business. However I trust the Pozzo's they've been doing it for years and they know exactly what they are doing.
I don't disagree with your post but I could have sworn he signed a 5 yr deal at some point in last 12-18 months or so?
a thrid of the new East Stand £2m - it 's name can start with ASS brilliant busines - under previous owners it would have been £500k plus add ons and a percentage.. just to keep the club from admin.. big small club to small big club in one year wow...
FFP sanctions for failing to keep within your allowed losses do not kick in until next season ( presume this means the publishing of accounts relating to the 2014/15 season, so thats two years away. If we are in the Prem, then it hardly matters financially about whether we sell Britt or not, as the income there is massive & we get players from Pozzo's anyway. But I guess its a good start for the new financial year to have a bit of cash around to offset higher wages ( is our financial year just starting or just ending ? Not sure about that one.)
Here's my take. On one hand, we've received nearly £2m (if the reports are correct) for a player who has never even played at League 1 level. That is fantastic business. Though he had a good season last season, he is young and unproved and for us to get a deal like that is very good indeed. In terms of £ then, it's a great deal. On the other hand, we've let go a young lad who impressed in the lower tiers of the Football League. Reports were promising, and it seems he has a fair amount of potential. On top of this, he's come all the way through our academy and though he didn't have much of a shot at making an impact here this season in fairness, I did expect a loan move to a League 1 club, so you can understand my surprise at the sale. We did very, very well to get as much as we did for him, but I'm gutted we've lost a young, homegrown talent. I was genuinely looking forward to following his development this season. It's a good move for him in the meantime, and if it works out for him, Peterborough have signed a replacement for Gayle who cost nearly a quarter of the price! Peterborough overpaid for Assombalonga, but they can completely afford to because Palace threw that £8.5m like it was going out of fashion. I am happy we have first refusal though Best of luck to the lad, I will be following his season with much interest...
not too bothered. good deal for all parties. i don't think he will ever be a world beater, but if he does turn out to be better than expected at least we have a chance to get him back.
Ok, I stand corrected. With less than 12 months left on a contract of a player that won't feature every week and may go out on loan the deal was a no brainer
I think he came into the academy late and has only been with Watford a couple of years hasn't he? EDIT: Only been here since 2010, age 17: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britt_Assombalonga (I know, anyone can edit Dikipedia!) 2nd EDIT: Player profile from WFC site: http://www.watfordfc.com/team/player-profile/index.aspx?playerid=466297&tcmuri=194650
He needs to be playing football I was hoping that we would send him out on loan but in the end we have received a decent price for him. Also the inclusion of a buy back option is good foresight on the clubs behalf. Must've been a big decision for Brit to leave - Good Luck to him. Onwards and Upwards COYH
Interview from sometime this morning regarding Peterborough signing Britt with a silent Barry Fry (surely the first time ever he's been kept quiet in an interview!?!) and chairman Darragh MacAnthony. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnZlcB_ESqo&feature=youtu.be&a No, I can't inbed it. Sorry. Meaningful or not but I see the news of the transfer on the official site has been pushed to one side by an interview with Uche Ikpeazu and how he loves to score goals.
I think the accounts for this season 13/14 will have to be declared by December 2014, for sanctions in 2014/15. If we exceed £3m loss (or £8m loss if Pozzo buys £5m equity in club) then we will be fined the difference if we go up, or receive a transfer embargo (a proper one) if we stay down. So I think the Britt sale is important for FPP.
