Why would you make teachers and nurses redundant when there are not enough of them? Bizarre. If they aren’t good enough, then that’s capability and people get dismissed or let go frequently.

anyway I was basing my opinion on having worked with several Times Top 100 recruiters who all specifically have public targets for their hiring demographics. It's all publicly available info

There will be people who bought Jedward records but not Kraftwerk in the same way there are people who bought Joe Dolce and not Ultravox "Vienna". You prefer Kraftwerk, others prefer Jedward. More innovative, more musically talented, maybe but "better" is subjective.

 

Nonsense. Everything is subjective on that basis. What's the point of having reviews of restaurants, plays, movies etc?

Also, I changed the OP from Kraftwerk to The Beatles to make the point even clearer.

My point is the same. They're not better unless you define "better" as "more influential", "more successful" etc. There will be people who prefer Jedward songs. My favourite band are "the Cure". I wouldn't get hung up on whether they are "better" than The Beatles or Jedward. I prefer them to both. No-one can just argue that the Beatles are "better" than The Cure. They might prefer them and correctly state they were more successful, influential etc . Better is 100% subjective depending on what you persoanlly prefer and what you're choosing to measure. Is rap music better than heavy metal ?

There's surely some sort of concept of quality (?craftsmanship?) which can be applied to art (in its broadest sense) albeit that I agree that preference plays a major role and the division into sub-genres makes comparison difficult.

Incidentally, I am not 'hung up on it', that's not the point of this thread; it's explicitly about 'opinions'...

Absolutely! I worked at Birmingham Conservatoire. Music students get judged on the quality of their performances. Whether or not the assessors prefer Messiaen to Beethoven is not the issue in the assessment of a recital.
