Depends on who you ask. A lot of people I know think the taste changed despite the branding difference. I think it did, I remember it being not quite as sweet tasting as it is now.

Peter Gabriel was an iconic front man. I do agree with you there, and Colins is still one of the best drummers in world history. It was probably a difficult choice to keep going after he quit. I still have all their albums (mostly on cassette).

In the private sector companies will go for younger (think they work harder, have new ideas) and cheaper, sure. But they won’t get rid of invaluable skills. Part of this is just change.

Which sectors are you referring to?

You can’t do that. It’s illegal. I would certainly refuse. Nothing wrong with looking for diverse candidates, but the best one gets it. End of.

Actually, I don't think they ever really considered packing up after he left; they auditioned LOADS of singers and Collins used to sing the songs to them the way they wanted them sung & they eventually came to the conclusion that the only person who seemed capable of doing it properly was Collins himself.

They had a much more serious 'crisis' just after releasing 'Trespass' when Anthony Phillips quit as he couldn't handle his stage fright. Up till then he'd been the main 'musician' in the band; this was before Collins had joined, and I agree he is a great drummer.

I saw them in good old Watford 5 times between 1970 & 1972....I bought Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound & The Lamb Lies Down & still listen to them....'Trick Of The Tail' was OK although I didn't buy it. But when Hacket left & they released 'Now We Are Twee' I didn't bother any more.

Roxy Music and in particular preening tosspot Bryan Ferry are not cool and never should have been considered so.

'Positive discrimination' is illegal. 'Positive action' is ok. It's a bit like 'tax avoidance' and 'tax evasion' - the difference is a bit wooly but get it wrong and you might find yourself in the 5hit

The opinions are by definition unpopular and one knows one is right irrespective of what anyone else thinks.

It's @wfcmoog's thread, I think he should adjudicate.

I'm interested in what sector you work in Moose if you haven't seen any age discrimination at all..

In advertising it is a regular occurrence for an older male to be made redundant for no other reason than to redress the gender pay. Client's actually ask what the balance of gender pay is when they ask agencies to pitch
As for your quote to get the wife to work I can only presume you are young(er). Most 50+ year old men were the main bread winner of the family whilst the women gave up their careers to look after the children (a scenario that will probably not be repeated nowadays). Even if the wife went back to work she can not replace the income of her husband after she has been out of the marketplace for 20+ years!

I hesitate to enter into this since I don't think this thread should be about debating but - I work in the higher education sector and we have similar policies in relation to applications for pay increments, albeit with far less significant consequences for those who lose out.

I work in the public sector and ain’t no one good getting binned. There aren’t enough doctors, dentists, nurses, social workers, OTs etc as it is.

Frankly, if that’s the way they operate it, the wage gap thing is simply a ruse to get rid of older high salaries.

I’m the wrong side of 60 and have always worked with women. Men may have worked more during the childcare years, but most families I know couldn’t live on one salary anyway and never did. Now the kids are off, unless they are well off, most older women will work FT again.

I think yours is an unusual circle if it has women who grew up in the 60s and 70s who expect to be kept and never thought they needed their own skills/career.

That is the worst and most obviously wrong opinion ever. There will be no murals for Bryan Ferry when he dies, no Worldwide outpouring of grief.

It truly is an unpopular opinion.

I've recruited about 8 people in my time at my current place. I think only one has been a white male.

I've always done it on merit and will continue to do so, despite any instructions.

Your work culture is the problem not mine. I’ve recruited hundreds of staff and overseen senior level appointments. Always demonstrably on merit.

Stop hectoring me and do something about the industry you are in if you think it’s out of kilter.

I doubt a claim could be made that their developmental trajectory was either as varied or influential as Bowie's, but there you go. And I like both BTW.

  28. Keighley

But (and I am wary of entering into a debate on what I am conscious is an unpopular opinion) 'influential' doesn't have to mean better.

The Beatles were more influential than the Monkees, but the Monkees were better. IMH(U)O.

Plus, Bowie was even more **** after Scary Monsters.

Now I'm sure you're taking the p155 re: the Beatles. Most of the Monkees songs people actually heard were not even written by them, but still. (And yes, I do know Nesmith and Tork had successful subsequent musical careers, but they didn't even play on the first 2 Monkees albums.) And of course, without the Beatles there would have been no incentive for The Monkees to have been manufactured.

And if Bowie was 'more ***' after Scary Monsters, how would you compare the 'worth' of Avalon compared to Roxy's first few albums?

Without defining how you're using the term 'better', it's a difficult debate to have!

No musical act is better than any other. They're just different. Some might be more complex, some might be more original, some might be more popular, but not "better".
    ...and that's my unpopular opinion.

As I thought....public sector. Nothing wrong with that but life in private sector couldn't be more different. When was the last time a teacher or a nurse was made redundant that wasn't for something evil or gross incompetency? It's a totally different life. And that's my opinion. And I don't care what others think
