But what of Meghan Markle? Surely she won’t ruin the big day?

I found this partucularly amusing as our current "Improving Viewing" has been Simon Schama's, frankly brilliant, "A History of Britain" (we've just finish S02E04, "The Wrong Empire (1750-1800)"):

I've actually met the current "Pretender to the Throne" (in the company of a group pissed-up sweaties, one of whom knew exactly who he was in Nida when he was visiting Thomas Mann's house).

Will he be paying for it himself out of the Duchy of Cornwall's revenues ? Or is it us again the taxpayer at a time when public finances are so thinly stretched. Think of what could be done with the money. The only thing I'm looking forward to is walking across the Cosmati pavement myself as that is a historical artefact. Something the monarchy needs to be consigned to.

Not a monarchy fan and will be doing something other than watching. But I do acknowledge that on balance they make a contribution to the country and the economy, through increased tourism revenue and perceived status on the world stage.

Charlie is not a bad old sod, his heart appears to be in the right place on most topics of interest such as environment, sustainability etc. When the alternative is some of the others in that family or electing a president I'll go with what we've got.

Can I ask, did you blame the EU when we had riots in 2011 under Cameron?

    https://amp.theguardian.com/uk/2011/aug/09/david-cameron-full-statement-uk-riots

Being pro EU doesn't mean I support every leader of countries in the EU. I also don't blame member countries domestic issues on the EU. In fact it proves that each country is independent and sovereign.

  9. Davy Crockett

    Davy Crockett Reservist

We were still in the EU in 2011 so that was on their watch , so to speak . So in answer to your question.Yes.

  10. sydney_horn

So, if Cameron and his government were not responsible for the riots in the UK then why is Macron responsible for the civil unrest in France?

Of course is not the EU's responsibility. If the EU intervened in France, or had done so in the UK in 2011, Brexiters would be the first to complain and, for once, they would be right to do so.

I was quite surprised at the reaction to Brenda's death. It has to be said, from my observations, the vast majority were well in to it. It was worse than Lady Di.

I think we're still a long way from getting rid of these self-declared 'royals' and 'dukes' and 'barons' who live like, well princes, at our expense just through luck of family birth.

More's the pity. Owning vast tracts of land also by accident of birth and history. It should all be returned to the commons.

When young people struggle to get homes and people blame migrants, we should remember that most of the land in the UK is owned by a small proportion of people, a few of whom just happened to be granted it following the Norman Conquest.

Our traditional elites and the super-wealthy constrain us all into a narrow space. The King sits at the Apex of this with large amounts of land devoted to his pleasure.

  17. Sting

As I see it the problem is twofold.
The UK has a large proportion of people who believe in "fairness". So they do not vote for extremely high taxes on the wealthy or even more sensibly on a well structured system of wealth and inheritance taxes designed to reduce massive estates towards "average" levels - even over a very long period. So once you become very wealthy it is relatively easy to stay there.
Secondly it is those very people who should be targeted who control the media and indoctrinate us into their very strange view of "fairness" They couple this with dire warnings of how terrible it would be for us all if those who "create" wealth are targeted.

As a result getting people to vote for wealth reforming measures is nigh on impossible.

Doug Stanhope on the UK Royals. Offensive language, but the point remains.

I urge all forumeers to see Stanhope live - most of his act is based upon the vibe of what he feels he is getting back from the audience. The first time I saw him his 'stuff' was so-so, midway through he made a dig at Bill Hicks and the audience responded badly to this - at that point he really turned up his act up to '11' and it was the funniest bits of stand-up I have ever experienced.

African leaders extremely pished orf after being insulted by the Brits at the last Royal lollapalooza.

    https://nairobitimes.co.ke/2023/04/...ated-abroad-loaded-into-bus-like-school-kids/

“Sometimes we are mistreated. We are loaded into buses like school kids, and it’s not right,” said Kenya's President William Ruto.

On September 19, 2022, President Ruto joined African presidents in mourning Queen Elizabeth, who passed away aged 96.

At the function, African leaders were driven in a bus, unlike Western heads of state, who were driven in private cars.

US President Joe Biden was driven in his private car, nicknamed the ‘the beast’. French President Emmanuel Macron also arrived with his entourage.

Ruto called for African presidents to stop attending events in Western countries en masse, adding that they could, instead, send representatives.

"That is the position I am taking as the President of Kenya,” he added.

So there may be a few empty seats this time.

It would be hard to describe Doug Stanhope as a liberal. Liberals may enjoy him, but he trains his sights at everyone. He has no time for British liberal superiority as the clips demonstrate.

Your analogy is not correct. The correct analogy would be a Muslim person in Pakistan taking the piss out of other Muslims. And that’s fine.

They can't and certainly would not as they'd either by lynched or put on trial for blasphemy and then killed. Happens to religious minorities and atheists there on a regular basis. Backward country.

While there may be an issue with the cars and coaches they ought to be more concerned with the people they supposedly represent. Mr.Ruto has plenty of clouds of corruption hanging over him especially as a land pilferer. And the rest of them well it's a veritable who's who of criminality. Scumbags for the most part. As politicians generally are around the world.

I reckon it’ll be ok until Camilla gets anointed, crowned and given a bejewelled rod and sceptre.

The whole thing is completely tone deaf. Charles could and should have swept 95% of it away. A few pictures of him at an intimate ceremony at Buck House getting his shiny new hat plonked on his head followed by a shift handshake with the Archbish would have been more than enough in 2023.

In fairness Handel was reasonably fluent in English and his oratorios often use the great English poets of the past like Dryden and Milton. He was at his ease in this country and indeed most being a fluent linguist. And the Hanoverians did have a spot of Stuart ancestry. In opposition to the prevailing fashion of Italian opera which was then railed at and fell into disfavour he started the tradition of the English oratorio.

Meanwhile the Beeb are starting to make a song and dance out of the Coronation. No doubt to fill in hours of television time. Yawn.......
