This is a great point and it's worth remembering there have always been glory hunters, even before the game became so financially distorted. The first two Watford games I ever went to (in the old Div 2, early 70s) were with a school friend, who then announced "Watford are no good, I'm going to support Arsenal now." We were only 12, but something clicked with me that it just wasn't right and you should stick with your local team. Our paths rarely crossed after that. I wonder if I made the right decision?
We should expect to smash these, but I’d rather save our lads energy for the tougher test of Burnley next Saturday. Nice and easy 2-0 win though to really **** on Manchester this season.
I went to school in the 80s with loads of Spurs fans – only a couple of whom went to Spurs games. Even as a kid I could distinguish between those who went and watched them play and those who had a Spurs bag and a Spurs shirt but had never been but taunted me after the Gary Plumley cup semi-final. Supporting a small club requires an investment that goes far, far beyond just making sure you can get a dodgy stream of the Saturday lunchtime game. And yet tens of thousands of people who live and breathe and feel their club are somehow made to feel by the media and social media that their deep connection to losers is somehow the relationship with no value, while those who pitch up at their local pub five minutes before the TV game kicks off are the virtuous ones for whom the game is created. The thing is, modern Premier League football has been warped to suit the TV fan – not just here but worldwide. Their values now have to be our values. And so we're lumbered with absolutely pointless mismatches like tomorrow's game where we're just goal difference fodder. I suppose, in the context of a terrible relegation season, it's these things that make me mourn the old, simpler days most. I look at Fulham fans celebrating their promotion and while I would dearly have loved us to stay up, I just pity them because I know the journey they are most likely on. The Premier League is basically horrible and almost pointless unless you can stay in it somehow. What an awful, unwinnable paradox.
Just an alternate crazy view. I think we have all accepted relegation. That there is a 99% chance we lose tomorrow. The club hasn’t been run well for 4 years or so possibly more. We are still Watford fans. This is still the club, friends and fans we were years ago. Those childhood memories. What it meant to us. Let’s not let the present overtake the past. We were here before this present disaster and will be here many years in the future. It’s our club. It belongs to the fans. this isn’t a call to wave flags and ignore what is happening and the the shambles the team are but while it lasts we are still a premier league club. Let’s support us with our heads held high as fans of Watford
It's absolutely fuccking insane how little we have worn that - the one sole good thing about the entire season, and we may as well not have had it at all. Then again, taking that into account, is anyone surprised?
Through it all. For better or worse, we exist. Currently in the top world league, we got us there, the fans. Without us - nothing
I can't help thinking it's probably more of a negative as we'll tarnish our love of a really decent shirt with the ignominy of a premier league record breaking defeat.
Can't stand Guardiola and still bitter that they played a weakened team against Bournemouth last time then a full strength one against us when we were both battling relegation.
1-0 Watford Dennis to score first 375/1 with Ladbrokes. Me and my Dad put £2 quid on each. Not massive amount we will lose. But a nice few quid if it does happen COYH
Ucko has just posted a picture of Forestieri putting us 0-2 up in the FA Cup game at the Etihad in 2014 and noted ' carnage in the away end' - he'd have been about 12 years old then wouldn't he?
Happy Getting Absolutely ****ed by a Billion Pound Team Day everyone! Premier League, best league in the world.
Cathcart to score first, from outside the box, from a free kick and watford to win 3-0 at 15/1. Stuck a tenner on that!
Hopefully Pep fields a strong team, I want to make some money off these losers getting battered by 5+
Interesting take from the old man. Thinks a loss is going to happen, talks about our crap home form but it hoping for a good show.
I have this feeling in my loins we might actually pull off the fluke of flukes today .... City fans on 'Blue Moon' seem to have taken umbrage with the opening spiel of the thread .... a touch over-sensitive imo, maybe the O.P. was somewhat vexed, but the wanton verbiage was comedy nonetheless - but most fans of both - or any - teams simply are partisan to their club and don't really begrudge others for supporting others. City fans should actually feel warm towards Watford as in recent seasons we are consistently the gift that keeps on giving. Most fans also like good football, and obviously City have been a good 'watch' for many a season. Would prefer City to win the League, only really liked Liverpool when J.B. played for them, though would be happy for Liverpool to get big win tomorrow, to up the chances their self-righteous neighbours end up going down, even if it's Burnley not us who reap the dividends of their downfall ........ Anyhow, back to today ...... City 1 Golden Boys 3
I don't think the people on that forum get sarcasm or why people don't like their club. Why get so wound up by us? Made me laugh after the cup final they looked more depressed than us lol winning everything is hard
Those are all top tier despots, don't think they'd be interested in us. We would need to shop around the tinpot dictator bargain bin. My opening suggestion: Ali Bongo of Gabon. Siphoned loads of money from natural resources out of the state, human rights violations and crackdowns on opposition. Solid name for chants too (thinking maybe the Um Bongo theme tune). Might spend the afternoon trying to track down some Um Bongo instead of watching the game...
