If you know your history of the Second World War moogie then you do not need to watch any film to know of the multiple horrors ie the Holcaust, the exploits of Unit 731 in Asia , the deliberate murders of POW's in Europe and Asia and so on.

The World At War encapsulates it perfectly.

This film was the account of a pianist who worked at Polish National Radio and I think Polanski did a great job in bringing the horror's of the Warsaw ghetto to life and not sentimentalizing the tale.

Each to their own , but you'd be in a minority view on this one. ;)

I'd never heard of Unit 731. Just read about it. Jesus. Words fail me. Makes the SS sound like boy scouts.

As many former British Army soldiers who served in the Far East said, they were a forgotten army almost and the war crimes the Japanese committed were relegated to the back of many minds in Britain whilst those perpetrated by the Germans were foremost.

To the Americans the opposite was the case as with the Palawan massacre, the order given in 1944 to kill all allied sailors at sea ie the SS Tisjalak to IJN personell and atrocities too numerous to mention against civilian populations in the Phillipines, Korea and China.

One Indian army soldier related how kempetai the equivalent to the Gestapo/ SS police units short of food killed allied POW's (Australian/British/Indian) and then ate their flesh.

Unfortunately most of those that committed these heinous crimes got away with it due to the leniency of the American judiciary and even when imprisoned by the Japanese authorities as in Germany, they were quickly released back into civilian life ie the late fifties.

Even today many Japanese refuse to believe they committed these appalling acts of inhumanity and refuse to even proffer apologies for their conduct.

Some are actively involved in another parallel with Holocaust deniers in trying to portray an alternative version of history in which they were the victims.....

I just looked Unit 731 up and it is horrifying! Words are so ineffective at describing the ludicrousness of what they did!

I have to say though, unless they were alive in the same era I don't think you can expect a modern Japanese person to apologise for the horrific acts of their predecessors, any more than I would expect a 20 year old German to apologise for the Holocaust, or myself to apologise for slavery.

It obviously has to be accepted that it happened, and that it was terrible, but apologising to me assumes responsibility, and I am no more responsible for slavery than a modern Japanese person is for those atrocities.

    Gone baby Gone.

Starring Casey affleck and directed by Ben Affleck. A huge surprise to me - a great film currently rated 7.5 on IMDB.

Saw it this eve and we should have stayed at home, was meant to be a comedy but only laughed a couple of times, would not recommend it Berks! The actual story is interesting and would have been better as a drama. The 2 main leads are OK and their acting is bad from them but Isla Fisher is plain awful. I ended up not really listening to the last part of the film, just trying to work out who all the famous faces were popping up in small roles and cameos.

The review I read said some of the cameos were good but the film as a whole was poor. Interesting to see you echo the sentiment.

    I liked that film too.

Watched Piranha last week. Boobs and horror. My perfect film.

The Wrestler. It's on Sky anytime at the moment I think.

Very interesting and a must see for anyone that has had any past interest in wrestling. Whether its was Oscar worthy or not I'm not sure.

Good film, although I could never believe that all the gangbangers at the end would let Ethan Hawke just walk off with the money. He'd have been soooooo dead.

What happened to my thread? I am quite simply furious about this. Non capitalised title as well.

    Farce tbh.

Due Date - absolutely loved it. Zach Galifianakis from the Hangover is brilliant and there are some really laugh out loud moments, especially with the Dog and Coffee!

I watched it yesterday at the cinema with the mrs and could see why it's reviews were weak.

There were hilarious parts, admittedly but I think it was too long, and Downey just didn't seem right. For instance there were too many long periods where absolutely nothing was going on.

Maybe ZG is just better alongside other funnier cast members rather than someone like RDJ.

Anyone seen the "Sand Lot", it's about a bunch of kids who spend their whole Summer playing Baseball in a scruffy field at the back of their yard.

Everything is fine until they lose the ball.

A great film to watch on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon.

Very similar style to the "Golden Years"

Watched Law Abiding Citizen on Wednesday night.

Enjoyed the film, thought it was very good and I liked Butler's character, my only gripe with it is it just ended so quickly, like, the plot was running and then bang, Foxx's character suddenly works everything out and masterplans to kill Clyde within about 5 minutes and bang it's all over.

    Going to watch Goodfellas later.

All of the Studio Ghibli films directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

I haven't watched them all recently, but I just watched Howl's Moving Castle again and they are just so good!

    Going to watch another tonight.

    Saw Jackass 3D last week.

Very funny for myself and friends as we're fans of the series.

Didn't need to be in 3D but of course it's all about the money.

Saw Days of Heaven for the first time pretty recently, thought it was really good.

Also, anyone seen a Japanese movie called 'House'? It's directed by a guy who had only previously directed commercials, and so the whole film has that glossy feel to it to an extent. Also the special effects are incredible, just so dated and bizarre looking. I believe the script was co-written with his young daughter or something similar? Weird and wonderful.
