Yet it should have been perfectly achievable in the current climate if they'd have got their strategy right. They cut quite a swathe through 'middle England' but in a lot of target areas they reached their high watermark still 3000 votes behind Labour. That must be worrying for them.

As it is they now hold a number of precarious seats which could easily revert to Labour at a general election in 9-18 months time. Dave has a very thin line to tread - one notable wrong move and the Tories will be back out on their arse again looking in at a Labour/Lib Dem coalition with a country tired of elections quite happy to let things lie for 5 years.

You could be right UAE. I've been very critical of the Conservatives, as I believe that the failure to wipe Labour off the map last night has been a massively missed opportunity by both Tories and, probably much, much more by Lib Dems.

By the way - I just signed up to Virgin Media for my house through a link on the site. Does that mean that Admin gets some cash? Does it also please Robodance and his campaign against Murdoch?

As I said though. I think Hague is by far the most capable potential leader of the Tories.

cooor blimey moogie , sky sports on top of the virgin deal is summat like an £30 !

Oh, and add the British public to the people who've missed an opportunity. Leaving Labour with so many seats in parliament shows why democracy is so flawed. People are ****ing idiots at the end of the day.

    I don't watch Sky Sports.

Plus, Ofcom have ruled that Sky have to lower their wholesale prices recently, to improve competition, so those fees will come down.

**** Skysports anyway. I live in Chorleywood and Sky couldn't even assure broadband speeds of over 1mb.

Is there some sort of deadline by which sort of agreement has to be reached or could this debate go on for weeks meaning no-one is actually running the country at the moment (some might say not a bad thing!)?

Read digital spy in depth mate to see how little that will actually take off a subscribers bill.....;)

but like you say , who needs sky sports anyway , we have lives outside the house

Once VAT goes up, interest rates rise, cuts in policing and the NHS are made public and the squabbles in the Tory Party come out then the mood will be interesting. Brown will relinquish the Labour leaders role and all of a sudden it's 50/50 for next years re-election.

Is the emergency budget still on by the way?

If Clegg had surrounded himself with anything like half competent candidates then the Lib Dems could have done well. As it is they are a bunch of bumbling buffoons. As a leader he comes across well despite some of his policies but as soon as anyone else is let loose on the public you tend to take a step back.

Time for Labour to freshen up and become openly accountable as the opposition. Win the next election on trust after the Tories try to stabalise a weak economy with cuts.

The general public are wishy washy enough to have been put off by Cleggs amnesty policy on its own , morons who love X Factor loved the TV `debates` but thwne it came to it , did they even make it off the sofa ?

Although the debates popularised politics I fear they could be one of the worst things to have happened this time around. Pretty people who deliver a witty remark is not what makes a politician.

Get back to proper canvassing, door-to-door, and not just at election time. Stop the mailouts of petty bickering and concentrate on what your party can do not what the others aren't doing. Involve the public, don't push us away.

Also heard that the Green Party have opened talks with the Respect party and George Galloway to discuss plans, and get advice on Brighton.

How much would you like to bet that if the Tory's do a deal with the Lib Dems, that one of the Lib Dems "Boy scouts", as you put it, ends up being the Chancellor

Wouldn't that be strange, if as you sarcastically suggest, "It would have been much better if everyone completely forgot about the economy" etc ;)

As a party, the liberal democrats simply don't have 2-300 viable candidates to make them serious parliamentary players. They have a load of Labour cast-offs, guilty middle-class softies and trendy ex art students who all want to change the world, for better or worse.

Your original post seemed angry that the Cleggmania bubble had burst. I say it's great news. The worst possible outcome for democracy would be if we started to elect our government in the same way that we choose the next Dorothy for a West End production for Wizard of Oz.

On the contrary, voting via a premium telephone line could mean that a rise in the rate of VAT, or other taxes, would not be necessary. ;)

But if Lib Dem had an equal chance of getting in under PR, and therefore be assured of more votes (I think the amount of people who would vote Lib Dem if they weren't considered a wasted vote would run into millions) then they wouldn't have any problem recruiting more seasoned politicians.

Its not like there is much in the way of ideology left in politics. Self serving canuts would gladly switch to the leading party at the drop of a hat.

The exit polls were pretty much spot on. It put the Tories on 305, Lab 255, Lib Dems 61 and others 29.

As an accountant my mum (so has a very keen interest in the economic side of things) fears what he might do if he became Chancellor!

He unfortunately looks like Camereron's mini-me but has zero charisma. With respect to his economic ability we will have to wait and see but lets face it, Ken Dod's Dead Dog could do a half decent job compared to recent history:biggrin:

I'm VERY happy to say that ours was way off. Even now the fact that the Libs are getting even slightly close to having some sort of sway on the gevernment scares the **** out of me.

If the Lib Dems come to an agreement with the torries i think the lib Dems will lose alot of support. People voted for them thinking they were the real party for change, and clearly they have proved they are not.

  34. PotGuy

Yes, because the other two have proven to be really excellent at running the country over the last 30 years...

Perhaps, but this is a chance that doesn't present itself very often to the Lib Dems. If they don't come to an agreement and it goes to a re-election, how do they know that the Tories won't end up with an absolute majority? I would people would be more inclined to vote Tory to avoid another hung parliament in a re-election.

Better to have some ability to impact than none.
