The article is bilge. For one thing, administration is for clubs that can't see a way to pay their debts. Sheffield United can see a way to clear their debts, it's called PL TV money, and unless and until they get knocked out of the play-offs, they won't go into administration.

For another, the cut-off for pushing the penalty into next season only applies to clubs that would be relegated anyway. Clubs that would not be relegated without the deduction, still get the deduction this season even if it happens on the morning of the last match. Which means the whole premise of the article is based on fiction.

But it’s the Daily Mail? They’d never publish a fictional article.

I mean, that’s not strictly true is it? Mel Morris could’ve easily paid Derby’s debts couldn’t he? Obviously not before he’d sold the stadium to himself to protect his existing investment.

Plenty of owners who can afford it will cut their loses on a club if and when they get a points deduction, and/or are facing relegation.

I think there are many clubs who are more at risk of Administration than Sheff Utd right now. Wigan, Reading and I would chuck Watford in that ring as well. We have already spent next seasons parachute money keep us afloat, plus the whole 16M Kamara issue, unpaid food costs and removal of bonuses from reaching the FA Cup final (not strictly part of it, but still has some impact). Of course, most of this would ease if by the tiny chance left we did get promoted, but it's pretty unlikely now.

Naturally they are other clubs in worse of situations than we are right now. Lower down the pyramid you go, the worse it gets. Obviously the Pandemic hit clubs very hard, grass roots and above were probably crippled. There are signs of recovery now, but it's going to be a slow process. Bolton almost went the way of Bury a few seasons back, Derby were close to the edge also. Even Baracalona, one of the biggest clubs in Spain has suffered from a lack of income. It's part and parcel of the game now I am afraid. Small Championship, League One and Two clubs are always at risk of financial meltdown, and it needs the financial nounce of a good owner and DOF to keep these clubs afloat. No billionaire is going to want to take on a lower division club (unless they are life long fans or a celebrity with a boat load of cash).

Mel Morris was the owner. It makes no difference if the owner has £50bn and the club can't pay £1,000, those liabilities are not the owner's liabilities (barring personal guarantees and the like) and it's up to the owner whether he chooses to fund them. If he chooses not to, and the directors (who may well include the owner) can't see where else the money is coming from, then they go into admin.

Sheffield United's directors will not go into admin while PL football is still likely. If they don't at present have the funds to pay their debts, but they have a viable and realistic business plan to say they can, then they don't need to go into admin. Sheffield United have a viable plan based on likely promotion to the PL. As long as that plan remains viable, there is no need to go into administration.

So they can bet the farm this season, but if it all goes **** up and they lose in the play-offs they are in real danger of administration?

I think its the future. There are plenty of fans stupid enough ( myself included ) who will pay over the odds for tickets and trains and put up with being treated like sh1t whether the game is on TV or not.

Its funny, but during lockdown all the pundits were going on about how awful the game is without fans, they are the lifeblood of the game etc etc and 2 years later we re back to the same situation where they are over charged, ripped off etc and everyone seems to have forgotten all about it .

The announcement of the Brentford FC financial figures just goes to highlight how poorly Watford have been run and what a waste we made of our time in the Premier League.

Most clubs are badly run and don’t make money like Brentford do.

We certainly aren’t alone in that .

Interesting stat: if the score in tonight's game stays the same, only Luton, us, Rotherham and Wigan will have picked up more draws than Burnley so far this season.

Still they can afford to drop some points, they've done remarkably well and being unbeaten at home with just one defeat in their last 35 is no small part of that. No one except the most pessimistic of us could have predicted they would be out of our reach by mid-March...

Certainly wasn’t for the lack of chances.

They will probably need an out and out striker next season - maybe get Wood back ?

I’d say that’s Sunderland out of it. Probably we’re the last of 10 sides going for the 3 promotion places now.

Yes. They are the definition of mid table. W14 D12 L13. We are one point above them. If we lose today we must also be out of it.

Yeah I agree, defeat would be the final nail. And bearing in mind who it is, that would make it a bloody awful start to the weekend!

Christ. Results as they stand will not extinguish that small annoying voice in my head that says we’re only 6 points off with 7 to play.

Boro, Blackburn, Coventry and Norwich losing. Millwall and WBA drawing.

If we’d have beaten Wigan and got even a point today we’d be right back in it, 2 points off 6th with 7 winnable-ish games to play.

    Send help.

    Thankfully Sheff U won.

Norwich appear to be as hopeless as us tbh.

Coventry can bounce back in their next home game.

3 points off 6th, but yeah what another opportunity wasted - apart from maybe Millwall losing again results couldn’t have gone better for us.

Luton have a good chance of being best of the rest, but while not meaning to sound like sour grapes, on the basis of today’s game it doesn’t say much for the standard of this division below Sheffield Utd. Earlier this season I thought the reason why we were dropping a lot more points than in 2020/21 was because the division had become stronger/more competitive, but now it’s clear it’s mainly because our team is weaker, and overall I don’t think the top six is any better and it looks like this season is going to follow a similar pattern with the top six remaining the same come the end. It may be that Luton were playing in a scrappier manner than usual because of the nature of the game (haven’t seen any of their matches against other teams), but none of their players stood out skill-wise and I don’t think there’s a second of top flight experience in any of their players. I’d even go as far as to say on the basis of today they have nothing like the quality of our 2020/21 team, with Hughes and Chalobah pulling the strings, a Sarr who looked more up for it and the odd bit of threat from our strikers, plus some actual drive and desire to win games. But what they do a lot better than us is play as a team (the build up to their first goal epitomised that) with organisation, energy, incision, spirit and an understanding of each other’s roles. Mpanzu may have played most of his career in the lower divisions and non-league but I think most of us if forced to admit it would take him over an aging Cathcart. But I think one of the relegation places in the Prem is already booked for next season whatever happens…

Just a reminder that it's shyt being a premier League club. That you people couldn't wait to go back to the championship and that it's much more fun being in the championship.

Also a reminder that we've won more matches this season therefore it must be more enjoyable than the seasons in the premier League where we won fewer games.

It really is hard to imagine thicker fans than WFC fans.

    I like the championship.

I don't like many of our players.

I don't like our transfer activity

I don't like our manager rotation policy.

Its an honest league, if we had an honest hard working club and players, it would be more enjoyable.

If we were clinging on to 17th in the premier league this season all of our problems would still exist. You'd want the manager sacked and a complete revamp of the playing squad in the summer and it will continue to go round in circles.

Which season do you think Burnley fans enjoyed more - this season or last season?

An average season in the PL is more fun than an average season in the Championship, due to the better standard of football, and the potential of wins against big teams.

However, I definitely enjoyed 2012/13 and 2014/15 more than 2016/17 and 2021/22, for example.

And yet as bad as last season was we still won 6 times and one of those wins was against a footballing giant. This season we’ve won 12 games against significantly poorer teams. Although of course the season isn’t over, so far this season we’ve we’ve failed to win in 25 of our games, last season we failed to win in 32.

If we were 17th in the PL we’d have won more games and drawn more games, so in fact is being a poor team in the PL much different to what we’re experiencing now?

We’re barely seeing the team win anymore games than we would as a PL side, but in the PL those wins would be significantly more satisfying.
