Personally I've never liked this whole "Deeney needs a strike partner" argument. You're right, he does need a pacey, beat-the-offside-trap foil, but most teams in the Prem work well with a lone frontman (and in fact, 2 up top has been rustled to the point that only a handful play with two strikers now), whether it be as the main striker in a 4-2-3-1 or the only striker in a 4-3-3. The problem with Deeney is that he's not mobile enough to be either one of those. What I've really not liked about him now is his constant complaining to the ref about the defenders climbing on him when he's very clearly not wanting to jump and is bending forward to try and exaggerate the "climbing" to win a foul. It stopped working last season, so why is he still doing that? That's the mainstay of his play now as well. In fact, he's a better defender than a forward at this point in time, cos the aerial battles that he does attempt and jump for, most of the times he loses out or he's headed it to open space/a defender. Don't even get me started on how poor he is now with the ball at his feet or the constant pandering of our fans with media soundbites and talking to the away fans after yet another loss. Save your energy for the pitch for Christ's sake!

Bear in mind in all of this, I have not forgotten how much of a loyal servant he has been to the club, how he understood this club and us and how his goals sent us up and kept us up last year when Iggy decided to forget how to play footy. In my eyes though, I feel he's got Gino by the balls with regards to wages and his position at the club and that was evident by him coming back overweight for training last summer. The Troy Deeney of now and last summer is markedly different to the Troy that we saw in the pre-season before the 15/16 season.

Okaka proved once again that he's a better all round player than Deeney.
Both had limited supply today but Okaka wanted the ball, he ran at and committed defenders, looked for space, had a few shots, he even tracked back on occasion.
Deeney stood up top waiting for the ball to fall at his feet perfectly and even when it did he did nothing with it.
When the ball is hoofed long he refuses to attempt to win it, instead aims to get the foul then moans when refs ignore him.

I understand the love for Troy and understand why some think he "just needs a pacey strike partner" but honestly I'd rather keep Okaka and give him a pacey strike partner.
I just don't feel someone so immobile can be successful in this league.

I wouldn't feel as bad if Troy left this close season as I would have for the preceding 3.

If we can get 20 million it makes sense to sell.

I'd try and get Abraham from Chelsea as a replacement either on loan or make them an offer they can't refuse.

To be honest, I don't care if Troy leaves. He's lost what little pace he had, he doesn't bully defenders anymore and his statuesque style makes him easy to defend against.

To scare defenders in the PL, you need pace and movement...something he lacks in abundance.

The only problem is the popularity issue, the outrage from the 'poster prayers'...the ones who say he's 'Mr Watford'...Mazzarri took alot of vitriol from 'Enjoy the Game' and The Wobby for dropping 'our leading goalscorer' for the Lesta game...thankfully not a sentiment shared on here, as from what I saw, the majority, including me, felt it was time to 'ride the pine' - to coin an ice hockey expression.

Truth is, if we want to progress to the next level, we need mobile strikers.

Agree with the above. He speaks a goid game but for much of the season actions have spoken greater than words. Saying that it will be a shame when he goes because we will have a squad of mercenaries and lost a major link between player and fan (though I accept that's football in general). Ultimately there can't be room for sentiment

Unless a bid of 15m plus I don't see any point in selling him. I am not sure anyone will pay that

No point in selling until we have a better player signed up. Wouldn't want to start next season with a front 2 of okaka and success as the first choice strikers. Vydra ?

I would. Success isn't a great 1-1 finisher but he'll make chances and both are very physical but technically sound.

This would only happen if games are reduced to 10 minutes, as this seems the amount of time Walt allows Success!

In my opinion, for a big lad, Okaka spends a lot of time getting knocked off the ball..on his backside and complaining to the ref. I'm not a fan of his.

Hopefully Wally will give Deeney and the fans a bit of respect and let him lead the team out for the last time on Sunday.

Or hopefully Deeney will give us what most fans want and get Mazzarri fired before then, lead the team out on Sunday and see his 4 year contract out.

However you're probably right and it will be his last game, but I hope not.

Well if Okaka can finish like that more often we might not miss Deeney's goals as much..

    Need 1-2 other strikers though.

    Still not a fan?!
Showed once again how much of a menace he can be. Niang didn't cause them a single problem all game. Okaka comes on, wants the ball, attacks, bullys, scores and they didn't have a bloody clue how to stop him.
He has gone down easier than you'd expect a man of his stature to on occasion but I've not seen him do it in a while and he's so mobile for a big lad.
If we partner Okaka with someone like Destro or just someone with proper pace and a natural finisher then they could form some partnership.

    Foul?

I just saw Capoue giving that ball away and falling over.

When Deeney joined us I recall watching and thinking that he was awful in front of goal, then I saw him turn into the Watford legend he is. I would rather he stays and fights for his place and show me again he has what it takes to score goals that win matches for Watford. DEENEY,DEENEY.....

  19. We are forced into playing a certain way when TD plays - but that is more often than not the case with any striker unless you can afford the best

He has done himself no favours with the Walt situation, irrelivent of how frustrating it must have been.

He's supposed to be the captain first-and-foremost, not a media snitch who bunks training and asks his agent to float fake transfer rumours.

Can't wait for his next interview in a few weeks time bemoaning the ills of the modern game.

I think some of you are being very unfair. How can he be expected to build his brand when silly little football matches and boring training keeps getting in the way?

Lest we forget: "'I am incredibly motivated. I want to take my brand, which is my family, the Deeney name, and make it the biggest it can be. I'm not scared to say that. I want the Deeney brand to be the David Beckham brand."

    Did he really say that?!

Self awareness not to the fore then we assume!

Troy has repaid the faith the club showed in him after his incarceration but this season he comes out with little credit I think. He's taken his eye of the ball and someone close to him needs to re connect him pronto!

Trouble is he's probably surrounded by sycophants who massage his seemingly misguided thoughts.

Sorry I think I've missed something among the posts in various threads. Are there any facts about something negative Troy has done or said? Reading a few posts up it looks like I've missed something

    Thanks

Yeah, he wants to build up his family name/brand, has media training so he doesn't sound thick and has created a charitable foundation in his name and somehow it's a bad thing.

Maybe it's because he's a footballer first and foremost, paid by the club and supported by the fans. He can do whatever he likes outside of football as long as he's giving his all in training and on matchdays.

He doesn't seem to have the sharpness he's had in previous seasons. He certainly doesn't chase people down as much as he used to. Maybe that's because his game has changed/developed but to me it doesn't look like he's trying as hard.

Sounds like Troy has got a bit too uppity for some people's liking.

It's astonishing that those moaning about him doing interviews with the media etc. can't put two and two together and see that he is filling a void created by Mazzarri's inability to speak the language. Media profile is extremely important for any Premier League club and according to many reports is one of the reasons why Gino let Mazzarri go so it is obviously very important to our owner as well. We are probably the least talked out club in the Premier League and if you asked any average football fan they would probably struggle to name any of our players other than Deeney or maybe Gomes. Getting it yet?
