Cleverley played in an advanced role in the first half today and hardly touched the ball. Chalobah and Pereyra were our stand out players with Doucoure not far behind. Lemina would be perfect but sounds like he has gone already. Midfield needs some fine tuning but the main priority remains a striker.

Seen a few Italians that don't rate him, think he'll be another Imbula. Good, not great.

Gone to saints for 16million pounds rising to to 20, according to ssn however Pelligrino knows nothing about it also according to ssn.

Disappointing if true. Think he would have been a real asset. I guess it's just so difficult to land the high profile players as bigger and more established prem clubs will always be more attractive. Chalo and Hughes were good long term investments but it's asking a lot for them to come in and boss the midfield with their inexperience.
Hopefully Richard Lee's son gets his WP and hits the ground running.
No idea who we are hoping to sign between now and window closing but I hope we will see a few positive surprises between now and then. And don't end up just signing the players left over that other prem clubs didn't want.

They trumped us to Boufal too, but he hasn't exactly been pulling up trees since he moved! Grass is always greener!

    True Malt.

In view of how many of our transfers are conducted I suspect players will arrive unexpectedly!

    Hope so anyway.

So here's a quick list of players who arrived AFTER the first match of a new season under the Pozzos

    Pereyra
    Okaka
    Kaboul
    Janmaat
    Guedioura
    Ighalo
    Anya
    Ekstrand

People can debate the merits of a few of these players, but I think in general many made a decent impact soon after arriving.

I note the last three guys were drafted in from sister clubs. We are struggling to get a left back/ left CB and I have suggested Samir from Udinese before. Would be happy to pay 8 - 10 million sterling as a good upgrade; great tackler and quick. Gino just pays his dad. Getting a decent striker is going to be hard. Sinclair looked hopeless yesterday and pushing Cleverley forward did not work. Okaka looked sharp when he came on. Richarlison should be match fit so if he gets WP might feature from the bench in first few matches. The other option is Success but he is still learning about the EPL. We need a poacher and Gino might have to spend a significant fee before the window closes.

In our two seasons back in the PL, we've had 7 matches before the August transfer window closed. In those games we scored 5 times and only 1 of those goals came from a recognised striker (Iggy off the bench at Everton).

The rest came from Capoue (2), Layun and Pereyra.

Looks like we will desperately need our midfielders to step up again this August.

Cleverley isn't an advanced player and can't play as a 10, would've loved to have Lemina but you can't have everything I suppose. It's just that he is what we don't have as a midfielder; a ballcarrier, yes Doucoure is quality on the ball / bringing it forwards, but his role will be limited into a sitting midfielder as Chalobah (a more classic 'central midfielder' ) will end up being the one who plays on the ball bringing it forwards. With Lemina's quality as a box-to-box midfielder he also possesses the ball playing / ball carrying abilities of Doucoure but has the ability and mindset to carry on driving.

If Southampton sign him he will be a quality pick up and be able to show off what he has with a sitting anchor like Romeu next to him

We were probably never even in for him. Just paper talk.

If the Richarlison deal is anything to go by, it seems like it's barely worth paying any attention to any threads on here born from random stories in the paper unless you're bored and your sole intent is to join in the random tangents they generally go off in.

He seemed universally great when we thought we might sign him? Is this not just another case of rubbishing a player who doesn't join and claiming we'd have signed him if we really wanted him?

I don't think we'd be able to get a WP for Samir, 22 - no caps, only been in Italy 1.5 years, no dual nationality etc.

Yes. Remember, there are those Watford fans who seem to think Aaron Lennon is the 20 year old speedster he was 10 years ago just because we are 'interested' in him.

Southampton are 3-4 years ahead of us as far as being established in the premiership and will always have the financial clout to bid 2-3 mill more. It's frustrating but if we can stay in the prem for a few more seasons that will be us in that position.

Except then Soton will be able to bid 5-10m more than us.

Maybe he will have the same sort of impact as Boufal (spelling?) had - none of note save for a couple of goals.

Sounds like an antibacterial spray cleaner anyway, sure we can get better value to wipe the surfaces at the Vic.

99% sure we got Chalobah instead because it was a better deal in every single way?
