Isn't the Nato base near northwood? I imagine they have units of armed police and counter terror police stationed fairly nearby if not within the compound.

I wonder if they'll discuss arming police again instead of having seperate units for them. That said, I wouldn't trust or feel comfortable with every copper having a gun.

The EDL really are a disgrace. Utterly despicable. The media as well has been disgraceful in the way that they have handled it, those videos should never have been shown on tv. Feel so much for the family of the poor young man.

You imagine. There are 2000 firearms officers in the Met. Woolwich has an army barracks, a high profile Crown Court and its fair share of gun crime. That took 20 minutes. How long to get right out to the edge of London?

Nationality doesn't matter. Deport them to the middle of the Atlantic from 40,000 feet.

Having worked very closely with the police in the past, neither would I.

Like most groups in society, they're mostly decent and admirable people who are motivated to serve the community BUT.....there are a small percentage of psychos and nutters amongst them.

Routine arming isn't necessary or proportionate in my opinion. But a Sky News paper reviewer is already criticising local police who arrived and 'hid behind hedges at the end of the road' while members of the public were potentially at risk while the armed response car was waited on. Something needs to change though what is open for debate.

My godfathers. Look at them. Presumably they had these balaclavas ready for just such an incident.

According to the Telegraph article, the attackers' main objective was to provoke a war on the streets of London.

Nice of the EDL to do all they can to try to grant them their wish.

I would think they'd scare any right-minded person Cude.

If you were not completely Caucasian and saw that lot coming down your street wouldn't you be a little bit bothered?

Oh I wasn't doubting that, but I'd have the same moments of panic as I do when I see a woman in a Burka. Religion aside, I hate not being able to see someones face.

Half the problems with terrorism or whatever you want to brand this is they feel god will protect or reward them etc.

And I'm glad the police didn't kill them; it's exactly what they wanted, infamy. Which is why they waited for the armed police to show up.

All the news channels shouldn't have broadcasted these videos neither. It's exactly what they wanted, fear or 'terror' of you will.

If this was a terrorist attack they certainly have achieved it, there's a whole lot of people living in fear now thanks to the idiots broadcasting the videos of them.

On a side note he wasn't Asian, he was a black man. Being reported of Nigerian descent. Although definitely brought up in London going on his accent.

Sigh, but that's just it. Balaclava isn't exactly part of fashion is it? I don't wear it too the shops. People wear it to hide their faces to commit crime. You think that's the same with a Burka, but you're wrong. Because the media tells you everyone in a Burka could be a terrorist. When in reality, 0.001% have something to hide, and it's because they follow their religion.

I'm sure the poor police, who are there trying to conduct a thorough forensic investigation into a gruesome murder, must be overjoyed at being showered with rocks and empty lager bottles by these clowns.

Sigh. Another person being to ignorant to read a post. I said Religion aside.

At what point did I say a Burka is a sign of a terrorist? Don't put words in my mouth.

A balaclava has other uses - I own one which I use on my bike and have worn it to shops, but remove it before engaging conversation. It's about identity and actually seeing who you are talking to.

Many people on FB have been unfriended for racist slurs, that'll bloody well learn 'em.

I can sympathise with the Muslim community, I myself have felt the effects of damaging and hurtful generalisations after the actions of a small minority of Leicester fans lead to a lot of 'hating' on the city and its inhabitants.

None of the above should be taken seriously, I have spent most of the day drinking. A horrible occurrence committed in foul and tragic circumstances, although the response of armed police was delayed at least the violence didn't spread into a rampage.

I think it was Christopher Hitchens who said the best way to stop poverty and terrorism throughout the world is the education, liberation and empowerment of women. And it was Sam Harris who said that "peaceful" religion is the shade under which extremists hide and form their fundamentalist ways. Once society legitimises and in lots of cases creates a virtue out of dismissing facts and continuing to have "faith" or irrational beliefs, then it is quite clear how extremists can arise. Once a vulnerable mind is taught how virtuous faith is and irrationality, and indoctrinated with the tools in which questioning it only strengthens their faith it paves the way for a tiny minority, and be clear that it is a tiny minority, to commit acts such as these based on the irrational ideas of afterlife for example. Faith and religion has a special place in society in which it is immune from question quite wrongly in my opinion.

The EDL are essentially a disgustingly closet racist organisation that was started by ex-MiG scummers who were banned from going to scum town games and got bored. Nothing more, nothing less. How their bloody organisation got this big I'll never truly know. One thing I can say definitively is that they are a short-term "solution" and just in the same way they replaced the BNP as the "next-big-thing" in the far right movement, they'll be replaced further down the line.

As for this incident, RIP to the soldier and and my heart goes out to the relatives of the soldier. Personally I believe the death penalty should be reserved for scum like these but since that won't happen, life in jail will do. My problem with this incident is that it has immediately highlighted who is very ignorant and who isn't and unfortunately there are more ignorant people in this country than I thought. There are more people in this country who will equate Muslim and Islam to terrorism. I saw this one comment on fb which essentially said that all "Pakis", as he put it, hate white people and v.v but neither properly show it. This is the level of stupidity that exists in today's society on both sides of the fence and, more frighteningly, could be the mindset of a person that might be standing opposite me in the Tube or on a bus or walking past me on a street.

What is to blame for this? Media. Simple as. We see more and more of this and it creates the image to some that this is what Islam (and even by extension Asians and even more by extension non-whites) are about. Unrelated but I saw this brilliant American video on YouTube blaming the news outlets for their portrayal of the school mass killings perpetrated normally by one person. These news outlets will show every detail of the murder (weapons, targets, etc.), what the suspect(s)' likely thought processes were and what their motivation was to do this. Lo and behold, a copycat murder would happen with almost the exact same details to it. We as the public have the right to know the details, but sometimes you have to question whether all the details they show are relevant. More importantly, could these extra details create a copycat incident or fuel hatred?

Ultimately my deepest condolences go out to the soldier's relatives and may he rest in peace. This incident will have only created a lot of reverberations in the public though and once again it's going to be a tough time for anyone, for example, wearing a shalwar kameez or a Help for Heroes shirt.

You better get one thing straight. Islam isn't a race and you can be as anti-Islamic as you like without being one bit racist. Stop with the race card it's old and boring and used every time to nullify any other intelligent opinion.

Outrage against perceived outsiders causing emotional reaction and rising up of innate own racism to varying degrees. Intellectual struggle to suppress this with empathy, rationalisation and compassion.

    Ending in sadness

The real problems lie in the media manipulation of these events...for those who know how to make up their own minds.. we watch the broadcasts and see HOW they use wordplay/choice of camera shots and editing to project an opinion.

Do they phrase the killing of Palestinians as 'terrorism' or Obama murdering thousands of Afghan's is terrorism?

Yes what he did was wrong very very wrong and he deserves the worst punishment possible whether it be life sentence or death penalty cos you can't teach peace through war but the hype generated purely by media is hilarious. Suddenly everyone is an expert on religion when 99% of the time you don't have a clue about religion or politics?

Millions of Muslim's are living peacefully in this country and around the world.

http://news.sky.com/story/1094547/woolwich-edl-demo-and-mosques-attacked - A police spokesman said they were investigating the "full circumstances" and said "it would not be appropriate to speculate at this time".[/B Lol. But you can call a bloody Cobra meeting?

My problem is not with the anger, I am angry too, the fact he believed he was Muslim scares me but just look at the hypocrisy in the above sentence, laughable.
