It's a shame that Tom Daley's superb performance tonight in the 10m diving was only the preliminary round and not the final, he smashed the field.

Indeed, the funding has allowed Team GB to go from amateurs to professionals and it has paid dividends.

Just in case anyone missed it, US Ladies 'Soccer' team keeper Hope Solo took to social media to show off her protection against the Zika virus:-

This was the Brazilian crowd's reaction to her when she played. You can see her getting visibly more and more uptight....

Paralympics is to be cut short due to funding. The blame has to lie with Brazil, they haven't got a leg to stand on.

We were battered but Hinch was like a padded octopus wielding a stick!

That poor kicking and punching chap, why didn't he just run away from the other fellow?

Gutted for Muhhamad. Also for the 4x400 boys. Not usually a proponent of conspiracy theories but something a bit fishy there?

Just a shame that the beeb wouldn't/didn't show team GB's full quarter and semi-final matches (only 8 minutes of highlights).

Shocker for Tom Daley - missed out on the final!

More gold in the Canoe sprinting and bronze in Triathlon.

They did, I watched both, think it was BBC 4. Sky Ch 472 to 479 has everything on as well (from red button) and it was mentioned.

Modern Pentathlon is v odd, swimming, fencing, running and shooting and show jumping. Why those things? Why not prepare a roast dinner for another event or create a YouTube channel?

Good for Brazil to win the football in their own backyard although probably doesn't make up for that 7-1 defeat 2 years ago!

It is one of the original events of the modern Olympics and is apparently based on skills a 19th century cavalry soldier would have needed behind enemy lines!

I got up early the following morning to watch them with my daughter and neither was on iplayer. To add insult in injury they had an 8 mins highlight package of the GB semi final and the full coverge of the Germany Holland match, the same thing for the quarter final.

I can only assume it was done by the beeb to stop other news outlets "sampling" their coverage for news reports.

Just a bit of a plug: if you were watching any of the hockey matches with your kids (particularly girls) and they want to pursue it further then here's the last letter we received from the coach:

    Any questions?

Re the coverage by the BBC, I have been very impressed with the live coverage, dependent as they are on the Brazilian choice of close ups, quick replays, etc.

But they really have not catered well for those unable to stay up through the night and who have to go to work in the morning. It was exceptionally difficult to see anything other than very brief glimpses of the medal performances, such as the winner crossing the line in the 4x100, or one goal of a hockey match, and then we would have the same glimpses repeated every half hour like a news bulletin at random times amongst the other chit-chat.

There should have been a simple highlights program 6-7am for those that wanted to get up a bit early before work, then repeated 6.30 to 7.30pm that evening.

Mo, brilliant last night. As was Nicola Adams in the boxing. Great Bronzes in the women's triathlon, the kicky punchy karate thingy and the women's 4x100 relay.

GB have now more medals than they won at London 2012. Might still finish 2nd in table. What a performance!

Sorry to see Mo get his medal in a completely empty stadium, apart from a small group of British fans. It just didn't seem right.

Our lad in the boxing unlucky to be beaten just now.

Still a great effort from so many people in a wide rage of sports.

Joyce was, as expected, robbed so the golden couple of amateur boxing could have their moment.

Seeing AJ ready to kill someone shortly after pretty much said it all.

Overall a very enjoyable games, I do sure hope that the Paralympics funding issues are resolved.

Also apparently there is a storm in Rio, so I hope the weather doesn't ruin the ceremony.

Also, is Sam Quek anyone else's Olympic crush, or is it just me??

Hmmm. Flailing around wildly and slapping the other chap's gloves, doesn't win a fight.

Joyce kept getting picked off with accurate jabs right on the nose by the Frenchie, who was taking the mick and doing Ali shuffles at the end. I think the result was probably the right one just about.

Ancient humans (hominids) and those living just a century ago performing hard physical labour are likely to have exceeded even modern athletes in their performance. Certain hominids would have flattened modern humans in strength contests and I wonder if certain parts of the world had access to modern training that they would generate world class athletes.

You still have hunters in Africa who run and run all day without tiring, people who leap over two metres with ease without any training, divers from the South Pacific who are masters of the art.

And there must be many individuals around the world who have the requisite genetic advantages and biomechanics who simply do not get the chance to compete. Genetics is part of the key as with individuals from the Rift Valley who live at altitude or someone like Eero Mantyranta with abnormal levels of EPO. But just that these are naturally occurring.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/s...-a-plentiful-supply-of-oxygen-to-1458723.html

Although governing bodies are looking at the possibility of excluding people with abnormally natural levels of certain hormones that would be a legal minefield and one in which they have not as yet dared to venture further. And a rather touching story:
    http://www.espn.co.uk/olympics/trac...-won-rio-help-pay-3-year-old-cancer-treatment

Although I would like to think that the individuals concerned could return the medal or donate it to a Polish museum. They have more than enough money to pay for the treatment themselves something other philanthropists with a decent nature are willing to do.
