I always enjoy an Olympics and I'm looking forward to this one.

I hope the opening ceremony will have a lot of men in tight white trousers and enormous frilly shirt sleeves along with lots of those famous 'coke bottle' shaped brazilian ladies with extremely brief bikinis and candelabras on their heads.

Apart from the athletics, I like the boxing very much and especially now you can watch just about every contest in every sport live.

Let's hope it's all about the sport and people who are clean win.

Not sure Team GB will match their London total but still ought to do well.

Sadly, it's common knowledge that the cheats are streets ahead of the authorities' tests, and drugs are so part and parcel of athletics that I can't raise any enthusiasm. What's the point, when every time there's a new world record your immediate thought is "Wow, that drug must be awesome". I'm not that interested in chemistry.

When the collective noun for drug abusers is a "Peloton of druggies", it's time to give up. I'd rather watch whichever new variant of the bakery/sewing/singing/dancing/diving/skating format happens to be on.

It was the same before London 2012. As soon as it begins we're all bl**dy hooked though.

I guess the Russians could point to incidents like this - not taken drugs but missed 3 tests although one wasn't her "fault"

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36948193

It doesn't help the suspicions about athletes and the likes.

I agree, they could do. But it was the UK that charged her and an International Court, CAS, that cleared her. The justice process has been seen to be carried out.

It is a million miles from a State secret service swapping hundreds of positive urine samples with pre-supplied clean samples through a hole in a wall.

But 3 missed tests seems awkward to me. Probably unfairly, I shan't feel the same about Armistead if she wins again. I felt the same after Ohuruogu wins.

I see the Chinese are already complaining about Rio being the worst ever.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-36944741

In the report it re-iterates their opinion that London 2012 was the worst, strange how pretty much every other country praised us for running a very good event. Apart from minor glitches 2012 was as good as, if not better, than other recent Olympics and I suggest that the Chinese having now hosted one are of the opinion that it would be impossible to be bettered.

The finals in Sydney weren't too bad as it was in the morning - same with some games in the World Cup (2002)

It does seem most of the finals in athletics for example are right in the middle of the evening our time.

Be highlights and of course there is the Internet now.

I'm surprised at you, Clive. The Olympics are a capitalist racket run by rich people and sponsored by evil multinationals. Where's your moral compass?

I am an unashamed Olympic-phile. However I can't say I will be watching too much of the rythmic gymnastics, greco roman wrestling or synchronised swimming though. As for the drug issue, has it not always been the case that performances have been enhanced and until there is a fool proof method of detection (which there will never be) you have to accept that some of the medals will be won by deception. Although Russia have been held as the scapegoats for drug related issues, the countries with the next highest failure rates are US, Jamaica, Kenya and Ethiopia which just happen to be the countries who always occupy the top of the athletics tables. I would have favoured a blanket ban for Russia but also limited the athletes from the aforementioned countries as well.

As for GB chances of gold medals I feel that we have around 60 good chances. Working on the basis that you win about 1 in 3 of those good chances and adding in a few surprise golds which come around I expect us to win between 20 - 25 gold medals which is down on London but higher than any other non British held games. Most bookies have priced GB at 18.5 -19.5 golds so I think it is a pretty fair bet that GB will exceed these levels. I would expect GB to finish third in the medal table behind US and China and beating the Aussies by about 7-8 golds.

Drama in the Road race - 2 of the top 3 leaders crashed on the final decent and the lone rider couldn't hold on for gold finishing 3rd being caught by 2 of the following group.

Thomas unfortunately crashed too when well placed.

Awful crash in the Woman's race too. Leader fell and looked unconcious.

It was a terrible crash right in front of the camera too. BBC choosing not to show it again at the moment. Hope she is OK.

Edit, she is conscious and taken to hospital.

Good to see BBC coverage for the Olympics ...... still the best despite monopoly now of BT Sport and Sky

Always good to see a few minority sports too

For me Olympics come properly alive when the athletics start but cycling was dramatic in both the mens and womens race

Actually they are always developing new tests and are testing B samples retrospectively so a fool proof system does exist even if it's not in real time. Just ask any Russian.

Thankfully not but it was a dangerous course.

No medal yet for GB (few 4th/5th places) but reckon Adam Peaty will grab gold.

I love the Olympics but I'm in Sicily at the moment so watching it via Italian TV which is a bit surreal. No chance to choose what sport you see, or even to know what's being shown when and the coverage is obviously skewed to the Italians. You wouldn't know anyone from GB was in most of the events from the coverage - we watched about half an hour of the gymnastics last night when a table popped up showing team GB were second; we didn't even know they were in the competition.

Not good, but at least you won't be waking up in the morning wondering why on earth you thought it was going to be worthwhile watching the Olympics on TV through the night - like I am now.

Sicily is a fantastic holiday destination, however being a Neapolitan - I will never recognise Sicily as part of Italy - a fact I keep telling my Sicilian friends.

Wasn't Sicily the first conquest of the Romans?

I was delighted to see Safarova and Nutty Babs Strycova beat the Williams sisters last night.

Nutty Babs was even serve and volleying, very brave! Serena is a scary player but her volleying is a bad example for young females to follow,so I'm pleased that technicians defeated power.

That was a horrific fall for the Dutch lady. A lot of questions about that part of the route.

Good to see a couple of medals to our name now,Peaty was awesome!

I am not normally a rugby fan,but have really enjoyed the 7s.Hoping the team can beat New Zealand today.

Pleased to see the hockey pitch is blue, the best colour to pick up the flight of a ball they say. Having said that I still feel like Corporal Jones watching it,no idea where the ball's gone!

I think it's a disgrace they didn't stop the race at that point. Some thing are more important than sport, even Olympic finals. Plus although I know it's a very long race and they can't have support on literally ever corner it did seem to take an inordinate amount of time to get anyone, other than what appeared to be a clueless spectator, to her aid. The organisers knew that area was treacherous after what happened on Saturday so no excuses.
