Agree with @Harrow Orn It does beg the obvious question doesn’t it of why the club persisted so long in signing players of dubious attitude who clearly didn’t want to play for us.

But of course WFC being WFC we don’t seem to have taken any steps to remove those people who made all these signings. Far from it

It is quite interesting to have been at the event and then see comments like this that are misleading and inaccurate - Duxbury 100% did not say it is the best squad he has seen at Watford.

I'm no Duxbury apologist nor his biggest fan, it is important to hold him to account but accuracy and context are important.

EJ is goi g to be more involved once he returns from France. This is the chink of light I’ve been waiting to hear about for quite some time. If nothing else, it gives these jokers a veneer of credibility.

Moaning all day on Twitter/forums but when it comes down to it, they're nowhere to be seen at the 'protests' or the events where they can make their feelings known to people who actually make the decisions.

They are just as bad as the 'Pozzo enablers' that they get so annoyed about.

I get the nuance, I do, but it doesn't exactly seem to be a major corruption of what Leventhal has quoted him as saying:

    upload_2023-8-11_14-54-54.png

I guess you could say that the 'technical' admission is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that nuance, in fairness.

It was part of a response that was the theme throughout the evening, that there is a togetherness now that has not been there previously in the Pozzo regime. Whether that is true or not we will see over the course of the season, but saying this is the best team in terms of togetherness and unity is very different to simply saying 'this is the best squad we have had'.

I suppose I would have said 'clearly no one is going to have thought that he was literally saying, in an unqualified sense, that it is the best squad of players we've had'. But, then again, a lot of Watford FC internet denizens are spectacularly stupid. So, who knows.

SD's comment was along the lines of "we lost our way and got it wrong, and that is what sparked the summer clear-out and the start of the new chapter". So he touched on it briefly.

I don't buy everything that was said, I don't necessarily disbelieve it either...I'm more in the camp of seeing how the season plays out. They are all talking about the togetherness and team spirit, the true litmus test will be when we face a bit of adversity like a few defeats on the spin. I'm not convinced the squad have the mental toughness to cope with that, I'm not sure Gino won't immediately pull the trigger again...and that is coupled with a fanbase who in large parts can't handle going one nil down let alone losing a few games.

Tomorrow will be a tough game and a much bigger test than QPR or Stevenage.

Yep. Well worth re-reading some of the infamous 'hell or high water' interviews:

    https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/20206210.duxbury-optimistic-watfords-future-rob-edwards/

“I have never been more enthused about a new season. It’s not just me saying this because I’m doing this interview with you, I genuinely feel that way."

    https://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/20585070.watford-chairman-says-factor-edwards-wants/

Duxbury remains adamant that the squad the Hornets have is strong enough to achieve promotion back to the Premier League, especially under Edwards and with a totally different atmosphere in the dressing room.

"Dan Gosling was very right in what he said in his Watford Observer interview: the squad has been improved just by moving out one or two individuals,”

He's a snake oil salesman, will just say whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear.

I am not sure what people believe will change with EJ taking more of an interest. Is it because people see benefit of having an avid supporter in the ear of the owner? Or the belief that EJ has genuine insight and ability to improve the team outcomes? Or he has money to throw at the wall of team improvement until it sticks?

Of course, it’s great that a former owner, (one who appointed Bassett and sold to Petchey for a whacking great hit to the clubs balance sheet), has the time to get involved in running the club. But what exactly (other than the enthusiasm of a fan), do people expect him to bring to the table? A powerful advocate for views not heard by the existing ownership? An insight on recruitment?
I am happy that any supporter does there bit. But realistically how do we think things will change by EJ getting involved in the running of the club?

Is this just a bit of nostalgia for the good old days?

I just think it’s a shameless PR stunt. SD knows he’s lost all credibility. I don’t think Gino gives a sh1t about that, but Duxbury does. He wants EJ and Luther involved as it gives him and the ownership credibility.

What’s the quickest and cheapest way to fans back onboard……bingo. Bring back EJ and Luther. I’m just surprised they are open to being used like this.

Tbh I think he just meant Elton rings a lot and has his say.

There was no suggestion about much else in terms of financial support or anything I presume.

And Luther will be involved on the community side as he is anyway but probably asked to help rather than offering it which seemed to be the case atm.

I don't buy in to the idea the culture of the players has improved. Same thing was said last season and as I've said on Stevenage thread senior players lost their professionalism when things started to go ahainst them

Agreed. Edwards was supposed to be the big reset. It’s all meaningless Duxbury dribble. The next 4 games will tell us if it has substance.

Also what “bad eggs” apart from Sarr (who hardly seemed that bothered to leave publicly anyway ) have really gone ?

    Surely not Pedro.

Most of the others who left were on loan , out of contract or almost were.

I mean presume the likes of Cathcart , Kabasele, Goslings weren’t?

And Cleverley has a new job with the club of course.

Sounded like a bit of an excuse and reaction to Saturday.

I do think Ismael has had a say on those that have come in .

Mind you probably means he will be under even more pressure to get results !

We it all the time in football - not just with us.

Hopes of a "fresh start , clean slate" etc then when things start to go wring "nothing has changed"

Probably not "bad eggs" over just surplus to requirements. Almost all of the players we have moved on this Window were well past their prime or had no need to any contract extension, or were not in VI's plans going forward. Cathcart, Kabasele, Cleverley, WTE, Gozzers especially should of been shipped out a few seasons ago. But it was good they all left under good terms, so no bad blood was felt ala Hughes.

Sarr was aching to get out of here but we could of gotten a lot more for him had we acted sooner on good deals when clubs had a keen interest. Pedro I think was an excellent piece of business from Brighton and we got good value for a player I am sure will only develop into a wonderful player. Whatever level he wanted to reach, I doubt we could of helped him attain it. We do need an aspect of balance now, as we are lighter than before in squad depth. But there is time left in the window to address this issue. Nobody is expecting us to pull up any trees this season but so far we have looked a lot better than the excuse for a squad we ended last season with.

I suspect what he meant there was they messed up by backing Rob Edwards come Hell or High water and are only now starting to undo some of the mess he made with his terrible preseason and awful signings.
