I see some seem to get upset to the term 'Lad'

What upsets you about it? Do you think 'lad' culture is bad for society?

Do they have 'lads' abroad or is it a UK thing?

I am called both a chav and a lad for ridiculous reasons. Those on here who have actually met me would know this is not true.

At my Uni it's full of "lads" who seem to think it's funny to **** in drinks and down them or do anything in the name of 'bantz'. The word banter has lost all meaning and in our halls last year we had a sort of mini rivalry with the building opposite and while we remained creative with our pranks their level of intelligence and lad banter reached as high as egging our windows.

I get called a chav a lot because of my accent (which I didn't know I had before coming to uni) and the music I listen to (sorry appreciating grime, rap and hip-hop makes me a "chav") and the way I dress (yes I do wear hats and trainers) but tbh I think chav culture is extremely different to just the music you listen to or the way you dress, it's a way that stupid people think.

What I was actually getting at was the same sort of thing you have described. People being labeled it for the clothes they wear and music they listen to. It changes all the time. When I was at school it was townies and metallers, then changed to chavs and grebos/emos. I just see it on the same level as "lad" culture. Kinda ridiculous.

What does being a lad actually involve? Drinking **** warm fosters and shouting at a copper on a night out in the name of banter? It won't be long until red square makes a return to our shelves.....

I don't particularly have a problem with this 'neknomination' thing, though it is a bit silly. I read about a guy in the paper yesterday who died (unsurprisingly) after necking 2 PINTS of gin, and challenging his mates to better him. Horrific.

In what world would someone think this is safe? Many of the neknominations I've seen revolve around a can of beer, why the **** would someone think it's ok to down spirits? That's just stupid and an tragic and awful waste of life.

Chavs are a natural phenomena, normally born of social inequality. They exist, but no one strives to be a Chav. "Lads" on the other hand are manufactured, and therefore far more dangerous.

Lad culture is terrible for this country. Why? Because it has infiltrated mass media to the point that being a lad is desirable for the most impressionable age bracket in the UK. It is a movement that involves being a t0sser, celebrating constant boozing, treating women like trophies, and generally shirking any kind of emotional or intellectual development.

Frat boys are basically the same thing, and they have a terrible reputation in the US.

I dislike it as it seems lacking in thought and intelligence. We all have to make something of our lives it just seems a waste to almost worship this culture. I'm not anti-fun, or not very anti-fun, but to set this as your identity? It seems bankrupt, hollow and pathetic

No such thing as lad culture. It's open to perception, but that's it.

Would you not just throw that all back up immediately? Literally drinking 2 pints of water would make me throw up doing it so fast.

"LAD" culture is the cringiest thing I think I have ever come across. Upper middle class boys who down a few jagerbombs on a night out and recycle the same old **** 'banter' to each other thinking they are hilarious.

However, it is important you don't confuse the 'lad' with the 'geezer'. If you want to see a great example of the 'geezer', go down the Pennyv on ricky high street on a Friday night. Short back and sides all over the gaff!

I remember my Grandad talking about his days when he was a "wee lad".

Pretty sure he doesn't fit any of the definitions you've described above.

    What's a lass, then?

Lad's are them annoying ****s who sing 'Yaya Yaya Yaya Kolo Kolo Kolo' outside nightclubs and then sing football chants as if they are unsure anyone noticed they were male.

Whenever anyone sings that Toure song I pretend to be a City fan and ask them what they think of Kolarov. Proper ****s them up and it's hilarious

Being an actual lad is one thing. Trying to be a lad is another. That Yaya chant is a prime example.

There is nothing worse than a @TheLADBible tweet showing up on my timeline. None of them are actually funny.

What I've got from this thread is that to be a "Lad" you must follow the following rules (feel free to add your own):

    1. Be obnoxious to the point that I want to punch you in the face.
    2. Drink alcohol. This must be in the form of a pint. Beer or Spirits are allowed.
    3. Sing the Toure song - actions earn you extra Lad points.

I'm actually quite curious as to what you look like now...

For what little it's worth, I don't see why people have such a big issue with this supposed 'lad culture', particularly the Toure chant. It's nothing more than a bit of fun and often done ironically. Drinking **** is different - I wouldn't say that's 'lad culture' at all, just being a massive *****.

Can I add having a ****/tribal tattoo to the rules?

Anyone with a tribal tattoo deserves to be ridiculed for life. Lad or not.

You have to go to Kavos/Zante/magaluf and shag loads of birds too. You must also put KAVOS 2014 in your twitter bio.

I wasn't aware of this. Now I've googled it and watched some manc ****s doing weird uppy downy arm dancing to it. I hate it.

For this single reason we should ban lads. I mean it, execute everyone of them.

This has to be the saddest and most pathetic thread on this forum. What is a lad? What is lad culture?

By your own definitions, a 'lad' is someone who has a pint. And that person is a total c*nt. Well, that makes *****ing most of us then!

Youngsters chanting the Yaya Toure chant... Well, the clips I saw weren't all of 'lads' were they? In fact, the one I saw that went viral was a mix of both males and females. That's right, females. Girls. And if you're unsure what one looks like they usually dress differently and lack an Adam's apple. So, is this a 'lad' thing or actually have you just assumed it's only males who go round singing it in city centres and the like because it's a football chant? There's only one thing worse than someone being purposefully sexist, and that is someone who is unknowingly sexist. And that's most of you on here.

For me, that's just young people having a good time. Back in the 60s, 70s and 80s the older generation would be looking down at your ignominious behaviour, whilst you were running round Brighton smashing the place up, dressing up in your typical mod or rocker gear to merely separate yourself from everyone else in society and put the spotlight on you as you act the total b*llend. And if that wasn't enough, you'd soon discover the shaven head. Oooh, you tough b*stards.

If a group of young adults want to sing in a non-residential city centre some bloody football chant, why can't this just be a bit of fun, eh? It doesn't harm anyone does it? If I had the option of youngsters manifesting themselves in this so-called 'lad' culture, or the gang culture, for example, I know which I'd choose.

As for this stupid drinking game that's gone viral - It's pathetic. But it's not a 'lad' thing - girls are doing it too.

My definition of the word 'lad'? A male. Any male.

My definition of the word 'lass'? A female. Any female.

Who are we to define, catergorise and stigmatise anyone else bar ourselves?
