I'd say that simply calling us finishing 19th in the PL and 13th in the Championship "two of the worst seasons in our history" is most certainly lacking in nuance.
It's the perfect example of the expectation shift that the Pozzos have caused at the club, and why accusations of 'entitled fans' crop up so often. The last 2 seasons have been utterly miserable, for several reasons. But a relegation from the highest level, with a couple of highlights (4-1 win against Utd, 5-2 win at Goodison), and a midtable Championship finish with a 4-0 win against Luton, isn't close to our worst seasons, historically. Recency bias and hyperbole to say otherwise, imo.
It’s absolutely exhausting that this still needs explaining at this stage. Still, far easier for the usual suspects to nit pick and pretend not to understand a minor detail as opposed to actually addressing the broader purpose of my post.
You're right. I feel the season we got hammered in a cup final AND missed out on a European spot was the worst season in our history . If someone wants to moan, let 'em moan. They have every right to.
I’m looking forward to see how they spin the minus 25 points season when we go into administration and get found guilty of fraudulent breach of FFP. “You know full well we are all somewhere on the Pozzo critical spectrum but it’s not as if we are in League 2”
It's subjective though. I preferred finishing 16th in the Champ some seasons with players I actually cared about and a club with whom I felt connected. Watching these charlatans half arse their way to underperformance after underperformance, not give a **** and seeing our owner drag our club's reputation through the mud is much worse than watching Keith Dublin concede a goal to Ian Ormondroyd.
Last season was disappointing particularly at home but we have definitely under performed and under achieved this season . 3 wins out of 17 at this level is awful no matter who is in the team - I doubt we had such a run with the fairly average squads we had in the past . I dare say it’s the most underwhelming season I have seen (since 1992) in terms of reality against expectations and predictions?
Our first season back in the Champ under Aidy in 07/08 was maybe even more dramatic, considering we were 12 points clear top of the table after 19 games! Then ended up just scraping 6th and getting spanked in the playoffs.
True a bit like the GT last season sadly when were unbeaten for ages at the start but didn’t even reach the play offs . But we haven’t really looked like a promotion winning side for a long time this season .
It turned out we were utterly reliant on 2 or 3 players that season, did anyone correctly identify that at the time, or was it only when they left that we realised our promotion bid was built on a house of sand?
No I was just playing along with the theme that apparently the worst season in our history doesn't need to have anything to do with performance.
Always enjoyed a cheeky Dublin back heel to the centre forward. He was a ***** player you could really love.
We've been in the league since 1896/97. In our entire history there have only been two seasons when we won fewer league games than last season. Are people really arguing that it wasn't that bad a season because it was in the Premier League and overall position in the pyramid determines how good a season was?
Has anyone said it wasn't 'that bad a season'? Think everyone acknowledges it was *****. Just that it's not our worst ever, even going by the metric of amount of wins = quality of season. I guess it's all down to personal opinion but would a lower mid table season in League 1 with 12 wins be worse than a season in which we beat the biggest club in the world, but only won 6 games? What if it was 14 wins in the National League?
Depends how you define a bad season. But as soon as someone starts relying on "we finished 19th in Premier League" as an argument as to why it wasn't that bad, it loses all credibility. By that logic, last season would be better than our recent promotion seasons as we finished higher up overall. Personally, I don't enjoy my club being thoroughly humiliated, whatever the level. I enjoy going when our team is better than the sum of its parts. This season and last, we've been considerably worse than that because of the way we've been run. I wasn't born when the two seasons in Division 4 that were quoted as a counterpoint happened, but we won 40 games over those two seasons so I'd hazard a guess they were far more enjoyable.
******* hell this forum is unusable these days. It seems offering an opinion that isn’t simply ‘Gino Pozzo is the worst man on earth’ isn’t allowed anymore.
In rather typical Watford style our longest ever unbeaten run came in our lowest finishing point in the football league for the last...40 odd years? 21 games unbeaten and we ended up 13th in what was Division 2 in 96/97! Then GT and Elton came back..
