Think he stands a good chance of having the greatest ever final touch in a Hornet's shirt, with that thunderbastard of a goal against Swansea with the final whistle blowing a few seconds later.

Did you actually read my post?!

Considering the Pozzos would have considered what to do with Success either before or during the Granada sale negotiations, perhaps even requested that he be transferred as a pre-condition of selling the club, it's impossible to determine what the effective "fee" for Success actually would have been.

The Pozzos may have only effectively transferred him from Granada to us for £1mil for all we know!

The Pozzos were selling Granada - it sold for €37mil. The players on the books would have been discussed as part of the sale, and the value of the players considered as part of the sale fee.

Perhaps the Pozzos stated that Granada was for sale, but Success would not be sold by them as part of the deal - and they stated the selling price valued Granada without Success on the books for only £1mil less than they may have otherwise asked for.

It may have then for some reason been financially prudent as part of the deal to artificially inflate the sale price of Granada by £11mil, in order that the transfer of Success happened at an artificially inflated £12mil (with the Pozzos thus effectively only paying £1mil for him).

It doesn't mean that the Chinese investor who bought Granada from the Pozzos actually ended up with £12mil more in his pocket than had Success not been transferred for an artificially high fee as part of the deal.

The amount of money "paid" for Success is a completely artificial number in that it's in turn reliant on whatever would have been paid for the sale of the club.

Further to my comment above, the transfer of the player and money between Granada and Watford could have even been made prior to the negotiations on the sale of Granada even formally starting, but only announced afterwards (once the window had opened).

But whichever way it was, the "fee" will have been an artificial number, and not necessarily what would have actually left the Pozzo accounts.

£30m would put him pretty close to the highest Championship sale ever. Not sure what it is exactly, but players like Ake and Pickford went before kicking a ball in the league so can't count. Ollie Watkins likely the highest at £33m.

Maybe and this is coming from someone that lives Joao Pedro, he has been somewhat underwhelming this season.

He is definitely more suited to the premier league than the championship.

If that’s your metric then Watkins is the highest although with add ons and sells on I imagine that Bellingham will eclipse him. Seems like if the metric is sold by a championship club following a season in the championship, Pedro’s fee will be the second highest (prior to add ons). Seems about right given contract length etc.

Hard to say what the right metric is as you also have players like Sessegnon (sold after relegation but with over 70 prior champ appearances), Danjuma (who like Pedro had a very successful season in the Championship but had prior PL experience). Very few of the big sales are players like Watkins, Benrahma, Webster who had never played in the PL before.

Whatever we paid for Success it was too much !

Of course has to be all murky and dodgy with potentially false accounting going on?

Anyway least we are making good profit on Pedro and good luck to him .

Not necessarily false accounting or anything dodgy - at least any more or less than every other time the Pozzos pluck a number out of thin air to value one of their players when moving them around.

He was pretty selective in venturing forward for Rosario and often slid down the right wing. He's still slight of build but he does move the midfield around and likes to get forward committing players as evidenced in his wheel. He'll only get better and was supposedly playing as a false nine the other night at times. I don't know why we don't visit Argentina for more players. Plenty of talent to be had. I'll still bang the drum for Veliz also of Rosario. Brighton have expressed an interest in Agustin Ruberto of River Plate. He's extremely good aerially, powerful shooter decent first touch but outside of the box he's pretty limited.

Think it's price related. I remember reading an article about Udineses scouting network ages ago and they said they didn't often focus on Brazil + Argentina as the players that were within their reach in those countries were double the price of a similarly skilled player from Colombia - where nobody in the league was really "out of their reach"

I don’t buy it. Not that you said it, not arguing with you, but you can pick up very good players in Argentina for less or similar to what we paid for Bayo. So to say the value isn’t in Argentina is nonsense. Brazil, I can understand, many of their 18-20yr olds are costing clubs £10mil+. You can certainly get quality players from Argentina in the £3-6mil range. I would imagine our wages would far exceed anything most Argentinian clubs can offer as well.

I banged the drum to sign Ivan Tapia on a free before he signed a new contract. Would have made the world of difference in our CM this season.

There is value to be had. Because of the economic situation over there certain clubs are vulnerable to poaching as it were. Others are starting to wise up and insert large sell on and release clauses (which is only fair to them). But I reckon we could pick up a few rough gems if we focused a little more. I like the way Redondo junior is also developing at Argentinos which is an extremely fine academy. He'll be one to keep an eye on in the u20 World Cup.

Pedro has reached his apogee at Watford. Immensely talented in some ways but definitely not the finished product. Beating three or four players in a row is very impressive but the end product has been too often lame.
He needs better players around him and definitely strategies, tactics and coaching to progress him further. He's been getting none of that here. I think Brighton would be an excellent club for those things and I would be surprised if he doesn't flourish there.
I hope we get a shedload of money for him. I also hope the Pozzos go back and find some more like him. Next talent we currently have is surely Asprilla. Like Pedro he needs to operate the weights in training a fair bit.

You could probably include Suarez and the left back whose name escapes me now, but is also at Brighton i think. Both sold for decent fees yet never played a competitive game for us. Dont think they cost too much

Obviously they are completely making it up like most things they write. Everyone has got £30mil from Fabrizio.

Hopefully it’s £30mil upfront, with another £5-10mil in add ons, plus a 10-20% sell on fee.

Newcastle’s offer was reportedly £25mil upfront, £5mil add ons and 10% sell on.

You would think it’s got to be a decent offer otherwise Gino would have played the game of a bidding war. Brighton have obviously matched what Gino wanted or we wouldn’t be selling this early. Time will tell and only when the accounts are released will we truly know, but here’s hoping it’s a ton of money upfront so we can clear off a decent chunk of debt and use £5-7mil to reinvest.

Far more likely to be £30m inc lots of add ons re games, goals, Europe etc. I very much doubt his value will have gone up since last summer or that BHA will be prepared to pay more than moneybags Newcastle we’re a year ago.

Everyone is getting a little carried away, Brighton’s previous transfer record is £20m and they are extremely astute in the transfer market, they aren’t going to be paying £30m plus a sh!t ton of ads ons and a massive sell on fee for a championship player who has had a relatively average season and Newcastle wouldn’t pay more than that when his stock was higher/he was younger/had a longer contract. The total deal will be £30m, if that. I’d imagine Newcastle are also no longer interested after this season.

Olly Watkins went for an initial £28m and he’d scored 26 goals.

You pay a premium for a homegrown player. I believe Pedro became homegrown in January so his valuation may well have gone up

Yes but they also have to be a good player, and Pedro has had a distinctly average season. Watkins is homegrown and scored 26 goals and went for less, at least initially. Brighton have regularly demonstrated they’re no mugs in the transfer market, they aren’t going to be paying more then £30m for a championship player with 10 goals to his name, homegrown or not. Him being homegrown would've been factored into Newcastles price as well, neither club are daft enough to have not priced that in at the time.

Ollie Watkins transfer was two years ago. As for Brighton not paying 30m you do not know what they are prepared to pay.

Well common sense tells me what they’re prepared to pay, as I said their previous transfer record is £20m and Pedro has had an average season, he’s pure potential at this stage. If it’s reported as £30m, then it’s £30m max, there really isn’t any need to over complicate it with some fairy story add ons and sell on clauses, it is almost certainly as it’s reported, £30m total price inclusive of any add ins etc.

Brighton are keen on their stats and JP is comfortably the highest rated player in the Championship on whoscored this season (somehow) - and this is at just 21.

Watkins was 24 when he was sold, so had less room to improve and less chance of a high re-sale fee in future, which would curtail his value relative to JP.

We all do. The total fee, including all add ons, will be the princely sum of “undisclosed”.

It’s just a reminder of how far we’ve fallen as a club where Brighton are seen as a step up for Pedro. They are of course a step up, and are the pinup boys for all smaller clubs right now. But Watford were promoted before them and had a head start, but the gross mismanagement of the past 4 years has eroded all the work of the prior 7 years. Had our owner been on it, we could be where Brighton are now and able to retain players like Pedro.

  33. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

Oh fair enough, didn’t realise Brighton’s transfer policy was based on whoscored ratings. No wonder they’re doing so well, I can’t believe no other clubs have cottoned on to their strategy yet though!

The Watkins argument doesn’t make any sense though, putting age aside he was far more the finished article (26 goals Vs 10) which always attracts a far higher premium.

Basically where we were when the Pozzos joined I guess .

Mid table Championship at the mercy of other better performing teams .

Hopefully for Brighton’s sake they are able to maintain their improvement and rise.

We probably all remember when Charlton then Stoke were seen as the standard bearer for smaller clubs looking to get promoted and consolidate.

How far we’ve fallen and how far Brighton have risen. They would not be taking the cream of our players had they remained where they were.
