Well, it was more tha one match. Everton, Man Utd, Chelsea. Even Leicester we lost but looked competitive.

Thereafter, we abandoned the press and became awful. It's utterly inexplicable.

Either Ranieri decided it was too effective and dropped it, the players revolted at the extra workload required, or Giaretta/Gino insisted on the more pathetic 'sit back and have sub 30% possession and wait until you inevitably lose' tactics we've seen ever since.

Indeed. Lol at anyone who thinks we're making up 9 points on them

I think we can as we still have two games in hand on them and have yet to play them at home.

I know ATM we do not look like being capable of doing that, but I think once we break our goal drought and start scoring again we could still climb out of the drop zone and stay up.

It will go down as one of the great mysteries in the history of the club. As much as everyone suggests we have dreadful players, it was proven that they are in fact good enough to stay up effortlessly. But for some reason the style of play changed drastically and here we are. Is it likely the current bunch would have revolted? Deeney, capoue et al, yes of course. But this bunch? I'm not so sure.

It just adds to the intense frustration of the season.

Currently I can't see us actually getting 9 more points. What's our run atm. 2 out of a possible 36? Yes stranger things have happened but presently nothing is going our way.

I’d imagine it was fitness. It’s clear that preseason was a jolly jape with GoPros and laughs all round rather than intense fitness prep. We look out on our feet at 70 minutes each game even without the press.

Plus we have an elderly midfield, a captain who’s going through the motions of a final contract and the new guy probably hasn’t pressed once in his career but we thought it was a great idea to sign him.

Don't kid yourself. We ain't catching Brentford. Eriksen doesn't even have to run about and exert himself. His set pieces alone will get Brentford the odd win, which is probably all they need; we need an effing miracle and it ain't happening. Face facts, we're *hit, and more *hit then all the other *hit teams.

Everton have been conceding lots of goals and loosing games they should be winning. But in Lampard's first home game against Leeds, he played Roy's same 4-4-2 but with proper wingers and they dominated the game from the first minute till the end and won convincingly. If they had gone for Roy, there midfield would have looked like Andre Gomes, Van de beek, Allan, Alli. And Roy would have been wondering after the game why Richalison and Carlvert lewin couldn't score from the few average chances they had in the game.

2 out of 33. I think that equals our worst run in the top flight doesn’t it? (The other run being during the first half of 1999/00 between beating Chelsea and Southampton)

I think Roy should go out all guns blazing and play both Pedro and Hernandez. Tell the players if they want to stay in the premiership then to showcase themselves in the remaining games then at least we might get some decent money with which to rebuild.

Roy won’t be doing anything other than what he knows. You’ll enjoy the remaining games that little bit more if you’re not constantly frustrated when he doesn’t throw his methods in the bin, and suddenly go hung ho for the first time in 40 years.

Poor old Roy. 3 weeks ago he was comfy on his sofa watching Diagnosis Murder, now he's probably lost the will to live.

His vision of keeping us up in tatters, now he's pretty much forced to change his style just to avoid the embarrassment of going down without another win.

    Good times

His quotes in this morning's Athletic article are quite telling. Seems like it's only taken three matches of being with us to break a man who has worked in management for 50 odd years. Already sounds like most of our head coaches do when they know they're a game or two away from the sack.

You do get that feeling. He's come in expecting this lot to be defensively resolute, and its now dawned on him what a laughable idea that was. He's talking like somebody that doesn't have the answers

Actually Maupay impressed me in the warm up. They often shoot in the goal they erect to the side of the real goal. I've got to watch as if you don't you run the risk of having a ball in your face. I noticed how cleanly Maupay struck the ball. He was by far the best at taking a shot early and from different angles. Welbeck was meh. He fluffed some, scored a couple. Most players are like that, but Maupay was consistently good. Even though his shot was a bit fluky in the match, it was no surprise to me that he scored.

His weird rant about the fans not knowing who was better between Louza and Kayembe was irrelevant and shocking. Had the likes of Sannino, Mazzarri or Munoz said that nonsense, we’d be having a good old laugh at how amateur they are.

He's also talking like someone who only has a 3rd hand understanding of the players at his disposal. I know it's only 3 games, but having to rely on what he's been 'told' about our strengths and weaknesses suggests he is a bit arms length from the squad.

He's sounding like an old man who was retired up until a few weeks ago. I doubt he'll be here by Easter, he sounds fed up already so if Gino doesn't give him the chop he'll probably walk anyway. What a terrible appointment.

They’ve got to do that for the team, for the club, because there is no amount of coaching that we can do that will change anything in that respect

You can apply that line to 90% of our current squad. You cannot "coach" mistakes and laziness out of player. Either they change or they don't, and if they refuse to try to change to perform better for the team then show them the transfer list.

What a damning indictment to the players that is and therefore to the governance of the club.

I doubt they "refuse to change" they are just not good enough or are too old in some cases.
Awareness of standards seems to be a skill that has left our club.
This mess is not down to the players.
It's like asking a group 3 county player to play in a Masters 1000 event.

Everyone has a level and through laziness, arrogance, lack of judgement or probably a bit of all three we have the squad we have.
This is the culmination of three or four seasons of neglect.

I don't entirely disagree when Roy says that the attacking players, talented as they are considered, need to take some responsibility and actually do something positive in the final third - that is abundantly clear.

My issue is with the suggestion that there is nothing Roy and Ray can do to help that. For a start, he could coach attacking patterns of play? It's been complained about here a million times now, including by me after the West Ham game - we haven't had coherent attacking intent for years, and we still don't.

I think the truth based on that quote is that Roy has never coached attacking patterns, because that's not how he is as a coach - that's fine, in the sense that it's brought him a long and storied career. But it doesn't make it true that there's nothing he could do about it - there is certainly something. And that might really hint at an issue with hiring him.

If we need our attackers to do something to improve, and he says he's aware but there's nothing he can do about it, that's quite a significant disconnect between what his job is and what he's actually carrying out.

It is a bizarre thing to say. The fans know the players just fine, as do the press to a certain extent. He clearly hates his authority questioned.

I like both players Roy, they keep the farkin football. He's clearly saying they are too similar, when the lumbering headless chicken gets an automatic start

Maybe play a system that supports the attacking players. Win the ball further up the pitch. I've neve been a fan of Hodgson and this to be honest is not what I needed to hear.
