Tom Hanks has made some good films, "The Green Mile" has been doing the rounds on the satellite stations.

I watched The White Ribbon (Das Weiße Band) last night and holy smoke it was hard work at times.

An intriguing story about German village life set before the outbreak of WWI.
Some very sweet moments were offset against some very violent & strange happenings that disrupted the harmony and peace of the village.

Little would the inhabitants know this was just a foreunner to what would engulf everyone in the coming months!

Although made in 2009 it was like watching a very old film and at 2hrs 20-odd minutes it was overly long.

Many great scenes although not the best film, it showed how people relied on each other much more in days gone by than we do now.
There was also a very charming scene where a young teacher met his prospective father-in-law in the next village only to be told 'I'm sending her to work as a hairdresser so she can meet more people so come back next year, see if she still feels the same way and maybe then we'll see' ha!
    How times have changed.

Also, not one to watch if a.) you want a feel good film OR b.) you're feeling depressed.
Perfect for a long sleepless night however.

    Legendary.

I was expecting the worst but watching the WWE I thought I'd give it a go.

It's pretty good, certainly I've seen worse. Cena might have a career after he retires from wrestling.

It's on Sky Anytime at the mo. 7/10

Just watched Go! On Anytime+. Forgot that Katie Holmes was quite a looker in her youth. Remember going to the cinema to watch it and laughing when Demond from Grange Hill turned up. Worth watching, a kiddies Pulp Fiction if you like.

I am liking the variety of films that Sky are putting on that service

Agreed. Have it on DVD and it's a much underrated film.

I changed to sky broadband a couple of months ago and got one of those homeplug things so I could connect the sky box to the internet. I'm pretty impressed with anytime plus. Almost as good as Virgin's on demand service now, they need to add a huge archive of music videos and it will be better.

A Rebel Without A Cause - I'm sure it meant a lot at the time. Now though, it doesn't seem that good.

I love You, Man. Good film as comedies go, thought Paul Rudd and Jason Segel had good chemistry on screen, big fan of both.

Just about to watch "One flew over the cuckoos nest".

    I shall review it later.

    Just finished it.

All I can say is wow, what a powerful film. A true classic. But what a horrible ending.

I assume they did a lobotomy on mac right? I wish they explored some of the mental illnesses of the others in the ward, but i assume it was a mix of dissociative disorders, and psychotic type disorders. It was Axis 1, 2 and possibly 3 for Martini.

What an epic beard that guy had though. I'm now in the mood for watching psycho, and comparing Jack's performances.

If anybody else has seen it, why were most of the nurses black, with afros?

I wish i'd watched this film BEFORE my psychology exam, it was really really good. I wonder what it is like compared to the novel.

Genuinely awesome awesome movie, well worth watching time and time again. 10/10.

I concur it is an absolutely brilliant film that is indeed very powerful.

The reason the nurses had afros is because of the era the film was set (early 1960's) and that was one of the only job opportunities for black women.

Just finished watching Transporter 2 and I have to say it's not on the same level as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...

Ahh right that makes sense. It was set in the 60/70s.

I'm interested in reading the novel it was based on now.

I think it was him yes.

He was awful. The only redeeming point was that it ended, and it wasn't anywhere near as good as one flew over the cuckoos nest.

That film violated my eyes more than Human Centipede and A Serbian Film combined.

I agree no where as good as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Simms, I don't know if you watch subtitled films but I thoroughly recommend the German film 'The Wave' ('Das Welle').

What starts out as a simple teaching exercise turns into something far more sinister and shows how easy it is to be sucked into something destructive while thinking it's for the common good.

An engrossing and thought provoking film.

Thank you. I'll look into it.

Would anybody like to compile a list of top films you must seen in your lifetime, such as one flew over the cuckoos nest, shawshank redemption, schindlers list, the good the bad and the ugly, 12 angry men, Dr stranglove.

You know those real old classics that I ought to watch during my long summer of post exam boredness.

Off of the top of my head, some of my favourite films listed below that may not be as obvious as your Pulp Fictions etc.

    oldies;
    The Apartment
    It's A Wonderful Life
    12 Angry Men

    not so oldies;
    The Wave (subtitles)
    12 Monkeys
    Pan's Labyrinth (subtitles)
    Run Lola Run (subtitles)
    Moon
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
    Lone Star
    Lilya 4-Ever (subtitles)
    Memento
    Cube

Thanks, i'll see what interests me from that list.

I've seen memento. Didn't like it all that much, very clever concept, and i'd like to see the forward version, but the storyline wasn't that convincing.

One subtitles film you must see, is called Joyeux Noel (merry christmas), it's about world war 1, in the trenches and the christmas truce, and it's told from english, french and german perspectives in their language, and it's brilliant. One of my favourite films ever.

The apartment is brilliant. The look on his face when he sees the mirror was just so crushing.

I watched Lola Rennt at school. If you think that was good you'll want to see Das Experiment with Moritz Bliebtrau (Guy who played Manny from Run Lola Run).

I watched Chinatown the other day (Jack Nicholson). That was very good. You can see where L.A. Noire stole some of their story plots from too.

I watched 12 Angry Men at uni a while ago and I can say that it is indeed a classic that has to be watched. It brings up and challenges conceptions of American Society as well as the class debate.

Pan's Labyrinth is also worth a shout as that is also a very good film.

A film that could be in contention to add to the list is Silence of the Lambs which is up there as my favourite film ever.

Indeed. It'd be a fantastic film to study for an exam or something, lots of good themes, of racism and things.

Have you seen the original or the 1997 tv movie remake?

Both are very good, but the original is far superior.

Just finished watching The Human Centipede 1.

Good God what a sickening film. Just amazes me that there probably are people out there who do such things, and such sickening crime scenes are plentiful around the world.

I didn't understand why the Japanese guy did that at the end, but I don't really want to find out.

    Inexplicably awful.

Apparently the film used the ideas of Josef Mengler which might explain the sickening depravity.

I'm watching the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street...

Awful, awful film why can't producer's and director's learn remaking a classic is a bad idea in nearly all cases.
