But it wouldn't surprise me to see Blatter pull a Farege and "unresign"

Their original evidence came form a whistleblower who was a member of the Qatari bid team. They probably didn't have much on Russia.

Because getting the law in to correct a ref's decision is a terrible precedent. Only FIFA would deal with the issue by handing over money.

Interesting that Domenech has got on his high horse over Ireland's behaviour. Since it was the French cheating that started the whole thing off, this would have been - as the French say - an excellent opportunity to keep quiet.

So why did the Irish start down that route then? FIFA could have told them to bog off but it would have ended up costing them a lot more than 5m euro.

The hilarity of FIFA saying they could strip Russia and Qatar of the World Cup if corruption is proved.

The entire bidding system is based on bribery which they actively encouraged - you don't ask the prisoners to make the sentences! I can't understand how FIFA can think that anybody takes them seriously now.

I don't really see how FIFA itself can even be seen as a legitimate organisation anymore. Corruption has been so widespread for so long that it basically veils most of the previous world cups as well. The competition itself is now fatally tainted and I don't see how it can possibly recover.

Indeed - as the allegations surface about corruption in seemingly all world cup bids, and investigations into all but 2006's bidding process by the FBI, plus the other scandals which seem to be about as easy to find as blades of grass in a field, it just seems that the organisation is beyond redemption.

I don't see how it can reform.

There needs to be a complete restructure of global football and that means an entirely new organisation with a completely different structure. It may mean that for some time we see some division between nations, but overall, I can't see a future for FIFA. Not one that I will take seriously anyway and I'm sure I'm not the only football fan who feels that way.

Why? Do you know of any other refereeing or umpiring decisions that have been successfully challenged in the courts? They'd be very busy if they started ruling on refereeing decisions made wrongly but in good faith.

So bidding for the 2026 World Cup has been suspended (wonder why..) and it seems FIFA will vote on a new President in December..

Maybe my post was poorly worded as I agree. I mean - there should be a lot of criticism for the Irish in this for telling FIFA they were proceeding with legal action which was unwinnable. Given the legal costs and reputational damage a delay to the World Cup draw would do it's no wonder FIFA paid 5m euro rather than let it rumble on.

FIFA should have said "sorry, mistakes happen. People in Zurich talk of little else than the Reading ghost goal, for instance. Get over it."

TBH it probably wasn't worth FIFA's time to fight it. 5 million is chump change to them.

Furthermore, if they thought there was even the tiniest chance they would lose then making it go away was probably the safest call. That would open the floodgates to further litigation.

Away from all the signings we're making excitement, Sepp today announced that he hasn't actually resigned after all.

Hilarious how he's spun everyone into thinking he's leaving.

    from todays Mail

Sepp Blatter says he has not resigned as Fifa president.

But, according to Swiss newspaper Blick, Blatter told a party at a Fifa museum: "I did not resign. I put myself and my office in the hands of the Fifa congress."

He's a massive attention seeker and his vote would be safe in December. He has no reason to look for distractions to hide anything.

FBI needs to grind Chuck Blazer to come up with more snitchy evidence and make that terd go away. Been awfully quiet on this front for a few days....

Blatter not traveling to Canada for the women's World Cup final:

Bearing in mind he hasn't missed presenting a trophy since 1998 it's hard not to suspect he's afraid of getting nabbed by the Feds.

Coca-Cola now requesting third party oversight of FIFA reforms. I suspect we can expect at least some of the other sponsors to follow suit.

Indeed. I don't have a lot of time for Lee Nelson but he has created the image that will always be used in relation to Blatter.

Then for Sepp Blatter to follow it all with 'that was not about football'. Sensational.

And what category would Sepp's Nobel Prize be in? Piece, as in "getting a piece of every bit of action going"?
