Fella near me in the SEJ refused to even celebrate Bayo’s goal against Boro, before jumping up to slag him off at the top of his voice when he later missed after rounding the keeper. It’s confirmation bias - having made up their minds they can’t stand the thought that he might actually contribute something.
With Bayo I see a quick forward that can get onto a through ball/cross and put it away every time. However he can't play with his back to goal and his second or third touch is usually terrible. Having said that Larry Magetigan (I was very young) was the same years ago and we loved him getting on the ball.... Let's face it Bayo is not really our biggest problem....? I'm writing this season off, we'll finish about 15th - wake me up this time next year when Eddie Howe finally turns up....
Bayo isn’t what we need as a Championship striker, but he’s the best we’ve got and actually he’s far more useful than most make out. He works hard, brings others into the game and has a habit of popping up in the right place at the right time (despite trying his best to make a complete pig’s ear of it in the process)
Bayo certainly not the biggest problem, but he’s a lingering reminder that our owner seeks to extract funds from our club to benefit his associates the Bayat brothers, so unless he knocks the lights out he is always going to be considered in that light.
Whatever the reasons Bayo was signed, he is the best striker we have at the moment. He is not great but at least he appears to try. He offers far more than the Dane and made his goal by putting in the effort to close the keeper on Saturday. He is not exactly getting great service and bucket loads of chances served up to him .There were far worse misses on Saturday than his. The Ince miss was worse than his. It does happen though, even in the premier. The scum game Spurs missed numerous sitters, the Lu*on player missed one from a yard and Pedro missed a sitter for Brighton as did the Liverpool bloke in the same game.
I actually like Bayo, so I'm going to buck the current trend on what people think of him. He has a lot of good qualities. He's the ONLY player in our current squad who likes closing players down and chasing lost causes. It's natural to him to play this way and it's been profitable for him, especially this season. His biggest problem, as we all know, is his composure in front of goal. It's non existent. Only Andre Gray is on a par with him as being completely and utterly hopeless when given thinking time before shooting. But, to his credit, he never hides. He never avoids putting himself into positions where he can fail. For me, that is a strength. Will he ever improve? I doubt it, but he's by far the best we have right now.
Agree with this to some extent. I do like to see a player close down the keeper or chase a seemingly lost cause ball. It's how Luther got a lot of his goals. Bayo came good this time because of a heavy touch from the keeper, but I would like to see him (and others!) really bust a gut to close these opposition keepers down when they're tippy-tapping the ball around. Maybe even slide in. OK 49 times out of 50 maybe it comes to nothing, but there's goals to be had doing that I reckon.
Bayo has to score here... he just has to. He could of walked it into the net. I like the guy, but he needs to be much more clinical.
Thankful for the point. Possibly a wasted opportunity as probably should have won but anything is better than the sh1t fest at Sunderland. Bayo - We overpaid for him and we pretty much all know why but that is not his fault. He's not very good but he's better than Rajovic but so am I. I still hold out hope for Healey but he runs like Douglas Bader which is a concern! Bayo does have strengths, he makes his own chances due to effort alone, he presses very well and he scores goals. 4 in 11 is not horrific by any means and taken over a season would give him just over 16. I think we would all take that. I was pleased to see him score but also pleased that the much maligned Kayembe and Livermore made a difference. Kayembe should be ok at this level nd certainly seemed to play a part in our best moments. Asprilla needs to have a run of games for me. I know he didn't do much Saturday but he's one of very few in the team that can open up a team and with the game in the balance I thought he should have stayed on. Anyway at least it was an improved performance and we have nothing to complain about this week. Wait, what, we've sacked Manga. FFS
Whilst I agree he should've scored I don't think he could've walked it in and a screenshot doesn't do justice to what actually happened. He needed pace and momentum to intercept the ball and to use that momentum to take it past the keeper, once he's done that, the angle and time to finish has cut down significantly (certainly enough time + space to slot the ball in with his left foot though!). If he wanted to pass it to Martins, he should've tried a backheel, if he wanted to shoot he should've used his left foot. Taking an extra touch to bring it onto his right basically cut out both possible options
The chances of him not falling over and booting it out for a goal kick whilst attempting a backheel at the pace he was running is extremely remote!
Maybe the sitter he missed in similar circumstances against Boro was in the back of his mind & he tried to over compensate this time by trying to finish with his right?
Agree with all the points you made about the speed he was running. Still would've scored if he hadn't had a bad touch though, you can see he was intending to take a touch to make absolutely certain, then open his body up and roll it in with his right foot but messed it up and when ball carried on travelling to his left, he had to readjust and panicked.
