I have just spent 10 minutes, which I won't get back, reading various articles about disinterested v. uninterested. I think I am with TUT (although this appears to be the old usage - not so common now). I think "uninterested" is an ugly word.

Just managed to watch the entire game on Sky, and here are my observations.

The entire team worked hard for each other being organised and committed. That SHOULD be a given, but has been sadly missing for much of this season. Now, it's looks like being a stock part of our DNA until the end of the season, thanks to actually being coached by top class operators in Hodgson and Lewington. So now we've got a solid base to work from, which will stand us in good stead in tough moments.

The amount of the ball, possession and pressure Villa imposed would have been enough to have beaten us only a month ago.

Maybe we rode our luck on a couple of occasions, but a poor touch by a Villa player saved us at the vital time. The referee could have given them a penalty after a clumsy looking challenge from Samir after only 4 minutes. Rob Jones was strong in that moment, and it would have been easy to have given. Samir did touch the ball though, so it was a correct call, but it's one of those VAR would not have overturned either way.

But, when it came to the big chances, Watford came out worthy winners. We created 4 big chances, and Villa carved out only one, and that was probably offside anyway.

That win was down to Roy Hodgson. No way would we have withstood that amount of pressure and stood firm, giving ourselves a base to go and win the game towards the end, before Hodgson took charge. After our goal, we could have scored a couple more to make it a very convincing away win.

Even though I knew the result, I still got anxious watching that final 10 minutes of injury time. Wow, I think we got stitched up on that, as no way should there have been the original 6 minutes in the first place. Those couple of other injuries within injury time only totalled 2 mins, 30 seconds, and he added another 4. So we should have played just over 6 minutes in total. But it doesn't matter now, as we survived it, without too many scares.

Special mentions to Kamara and Louza. They've really made a big difference to us. Samir too.

That team Hodgson picked was probably our best possible XI. Maybe you can argue Nkoulou for Cathcart and Etebo for Cleverley, but both Cathcart and Clevs are playing very well right now and deserve their place.

We need to stay injury free, and if we do, I expect us to stay up, probably quite comfortably in the end. We need to hope key players such as Dennis, Sarr, King, Sissoko, Kamara, Samir and Foster stay fit and available. We can't really replace those players with similar quality from within the squad, so it's imperative they are available for the final 14 games.

Well considering the original post that kicked it off was some nonsense about a “re-education programme” I assumed it was aimed at one side of the debate.

Not for me. King centrally is a much better player than Pedro....IMO.

Disinterested and uninterested have completely different meanings. If you misuse disinterested you lose a very useful word which is particularly valuable in these times when public procurement decisions are far from objective.

I used 'far from objective' rather than 'not disinterested' to make the point that the latter is much clearer.

Well JP is injured, so I guess it's academic at the moment

Could any of you see Deeney getting into that position King did at the end? Really good chance but a decent save. Despite his lack of goals, he is trying.

We won on exG or whatever it's called. That's all that matters.

Sorry, are you trying to claim that King is more mobile than Deeney ? Controversial.

No - I just read some articles debating the usage of these words and how it had changed over time, it took about 10 minutes.

Note to self = never again make an etymological comment on this forum :)

And disinterested sounds SO much more patronising, which is why I always choose to use it

I like a lot of what King brings to the table, and am certainly not a critic.

However, if you remember back to Brentford, he had a golden chance to put us 2-0 up, but didn’t. And we lost.

On Saturday the same thing happened, except this time luckily it didn’t cost us. But he really has to be putting those sort of chances away.

TBF to King, it was that close to the keeper, and the cross was fired in, all he could really do was make sure he got a good contact and got it on target. It was always going to be a question of luck whether he hit the keeper or put it past him. The more certain he was to hit the target, the more likely he'd hit the keeper, who'd be broadly in the centre of the space. Gray would have shinned it and scored or missed :).

I think any decent striking coach would tell you to go high on the GK there and go for the roof of the net. Any GK worth his salt would have just gone for a straight forward block given the lack of an angle and that’s what Martinez did.

Not going to criticise King unduly - but I do think he should have done better than he ultimately did. The GK literally had one option and King made sure it was successful. He did the same against Everton I remember so clearly didn’t learn.

Striking coach? In a Hodgson team? The same fella that had Harry Kane taking corners?

Clearly a shy and self effacing lad who lets his football do the talking.

Could easily have left us when we got relegated but stuck around showing loyalty that is rarely seen in modern young footballers.

He gets roughly one full chance per game and rarely puts them away .

It’s time that JP gets a run . ( when he s back fit )

To right if Pedro can be King then Cathcart can certainly be Prime Minister :D:D:D

I wouldn't be against JP getting a start instead of King but I still believe King fits the 4-3-3 a little better centrally. He definitely showed his ability against Villa and was involved with our best chances second half. But I do want more from him and he's shown he's capable of more.
