It seems that the Queen is seriously ill, it's very rare for news about her health is announced. Obviously at her age she is in decline anyway. I couldn't help noticing how dreadful she looked in the photo with Liz Truss the other day, also the fact that all senior royals are racing up to Balmoral could mean that she is close to death. Whatever your feelings are of the monarchy in general, I don't doubt the most would agree that she has done a stellar service to this country and has been the one constant no matter what the country has been through.
There are some people suggesting she might not make it through the next few days. I have never had any real investment in the royal family but nobody can deny what she has done in her 96 years. Longest reigning monch of England to date and a beloved one at that. Really touching that everyone is with her at such a somber moment.
Probably already checked out. I bet they're all off up there to fight over the keys to Balmoral and to stop Andy seizing power. She's undoubtedly been a stabilising figure over many decades, but I sincerely and truly hope we behead the next one and scatter the remainder to the four corners of the earth in permanent exile.
Since the earlier statement, no actual real news, just endless and endless speculation in a continuous loop. The BBC at it's worst.
"And so, Sir Stephen, what does the emergence of a lone piper from the West Balcony mean?" "Well, it obviously signifies a sombre moment in royal circles. The West Balcony of course was made famous by James I back in 1624, when he had a disagreement with a stray pheasant..."
Warrants a 3 mins headline at the top of the news then onto the next item. Like the changing of PM yesterday when BBC breakfast felt it necessary to broadcast the programme from outside #10. FFs just broadcast the speeches, tell us they're flying to balmoral, and then move on.... Just a thought, did anyone see Queenie after she met with Liz T yesterday ? She didn't did she ? Only room for one Liz at the top ?
All the family heading up to Balmoral and BBC have cancelled their regular schedule for rolling news..... sounds like she's already died.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you appear to have fallen in the BBC trap. If they do rolling coverage they're damned (the amount of complaints they got from viewers and listeners for the endless coverage of Phil the Greeks demise and burial...) or if they broadcast the actual small amount of news, the usual rent-a-quotes will be out in force shaming (and screaming for de-funding) the sate broadcaster.
Well I hope she soldiers on, God bless, if for no other reason, to prevent Liz Truss telling us we can all get through it together.
Probably. Seeing the first announcement was an urgent message to the Parliamentary Speaker mid-debate. Her Maj's media team are spectacularly 'last century' as can be seen with the announcements of the Duke of Edinburgh's "...bad cold...".
I’ve just been listening to it and hearing Witchell go round in circles without actually addressing the fact that she might soon pass away was very odd. I intend to respect peoples’ emotions and while I have my own opinions on monarchy I don’t feel like now would be the time to pick fights with people. One question I do have, I’ve just heard someone on the BBC talking about the sense of flux and unprecedented, unknown times that would come with the Queen’s passing… How? I don’t get it.
‘People may find it quite disorientating that the Queen’s life may be moving into its final chapter’ Witchell.
All of the ceremony attached to the death of a monarch comes from Victoria's death. There was no-one alive who knew what to do so what they did for her basically became the tradition.
Sad to hear the Queen is in ill health . Bad omen that last time we played Reading at home was when Prince Philip passed away
They're going to be bitterly disappointed if she pulls through after making a wasted journey and being made to look foolish.
Sad to hear this, considering the service she has given. Remember, those taking any joy in this and pushing republican thoughts etc.. at this time are very much in the minority. Now is not really the time for that stuff.
Some do seem to derive a weird enjoyment from these events. They certainly won't be happy if they have to wait to go into full mourning mode. I certainly, as an amateur historian, recognise the significance of her reign and it will be sad to see her passing as she has been a constant in my, and I'm sure most of your, lives.
I haven’t got a great wish to do so and I’m not sure who your warning is for on this thread, but I will say that if the constitutional monarchy doesn’t allow for us to freely express ourselves at any time of our choosing, then it really does serve no purpose. Moreover, expressing thoughts about the monarchy in no way implies joy at the end of the Queen’s rather amazing life. Lectures to button it won’t make anyone more pro-monarchy.
Amusing that the BBC left him as the royal correspondent despite the future king saying "I can't bear that man. I mean, he's so awful, he really is." what seems decades ago now.... EDIT 2005 in fact.
No, Radio 4’s default tone is impending tragedy. Armageddon would come and it would still be dreary on R4.
I heard that too and thought, Moving into its final chapter? Surely she's been living those particular pages for a little while and she's now thumbing through the index?! More likely to have been Alexander Johnson, with his final act as outgoing PM to slip Her Maj some polonium on behalf of his Russian overlords. What better way to finish off the UK than to get Brexit done, running down every public service to the verge of collapse before topping off his big ol' pile of bodies with the cadaver of the longest serving Monarch this side of Jupiter.
Nope. Economy's screwed and apparently her last will and testament demands all weekends and bank holidays are cancelled in her honour for the rest of the year.
