Watford Fc - A Deeply Rotten, Toxic Club

We only ever appoint out of work managers, so do you not think that often (but of course not always) that will determine their overall quality?

No Watford supporter is happy with Watford's poor performances this season and certainly not with that Norwich debacle. But this thread has become a dismal echo chamber, with people whipping each other up into a frenzy, often attempting to out-extreme each other.
May I suggest a moratorium on the words 'toxic' and 'rancid'? They have actual (non-football) meanings where they are useful, but as metaphors they have been flogged to death.
Arguably, the use of 'bedwetter' or 'COG' have become tiresome and could usefully be dropped, as well. They reduce discussion and argument to ***-for-tat insults and they eliminate subtlety.
Obviously, things have gone wrong and the boss is the one where the buck stops. I think he is making mistakes and that some of them are big ones. But I suspect that running a football club in a very competitive and expensive league is very difficult.
I would be interested to know if anybody who posts on here is actually a football club owner and, if so, what do they feel about it?
As for accusing the players of being mercenaries, what do you think the players at other clubs are? They all play for money. Our ones just aren't so good at it. Watching the players over the years I can see individuals who have fallen into that category. Pereyra was my least favourite one. By and large, though, I think mostly they try hard, at least when they are on view, although I question whether they use their brains enough.

Even 10+ years in, with all their countless ****-ups, the majority were appeased when last year's promotion was achieved. I think that effect would have been even greater if fans were allowed in stadiums to enjoy it.

And I personally think most will be overall satisfied if we continue to maintain our status as a top 30 club in the country, even if we let off a little steam after results like Friday's.

If I still want Gino to own the club but learn from his mistakes am I a COG? Or just delusional?

Yes I was upset when Joka wasn't renewed but I think they made the right call. Don't think they had any choice re Silva which was a real shame as I think he'd been excellent until Everton got in touch. Walt had to go, dreadful run, alienated the squad....and lied about speaking the lingo !

No that’s just normal, Cogs deny anything is wrong. It’s called Cult of Gino because they support the owner ahead of the club and advance any excuse to defend him, as opposed to supporting the club first and what is best for it.

As I said in the previous post, I'm not declaring I'm a completely committed Pozzo outer, though I've been teetering on the edge for most of the past two years saying I'll judge them on what they do next - but I appreciate the 'better the devil you know' arguments, etc, too. What they do with this next managerial appointment might in itself make my mind up for me. I believe there is a route where Gino can pull it back, but it really will take root and branch reform from the top down and I'm really not optimistic that he is aware of the need for it, or prepared to acknowledge and carry it through.

All that taken into account, I wasn't particularly convinced by promotion - I think the combination of the unique circumstances of last year's Championship and the way our policy was to very strongly ride our luck when it came to the squad and injuries, or indeed lack of them, in incredibly vital positions, was enough to say it was fairly business as usual. And, if your mind was changed by it, surely the business we carried out and the way we did so over the summer was enough to show that any dissatisfaction you felt before was just as valid now. Of course, I can't possibly speak for everyone, but if you're inclined that way, it doesn't seem to me that there was anything other than a confirmation of the potential errors and issues in the Pozzo approach.

If Gino appoints Diego Martinez, makes it clear he is here whether we stay up or not, and tweaks the system enough that he is empowered to build something, which probably involves removing Duxbury, or at least a great deal of his power, then I'll believe he can change enough to beat the law of diminishing returns. Otherwise we can only go on being strung along for so long making all the same mistakes over and over.

Do I expect that to happen? As it stands, no; of course I don't.

But what’s wrong with approaching another club for their manager? They can say no if they want. The problem is only if you don’t accept the no like Everton. Often they’re happy to accept compensation and respect the managers wishes to move on, sometimes it’s even pre-agreed.

Our own blueprint is supposedly that managers have a two year shelf life and either move on because they fail, or are really successful and move to another club.

How could our very own model work without other clubs approaching us? And is it any coincidence that after 15 managers, it’s only very loosely happened with one of our managers.

That’s 14 failures and 1 success if you count Silva. It’s almost like appointing Managers who aren’t employed means they in fact aren’t very good.

Yes 14 failures out of 15. What a dreadful run of terrible appointments. That's why we are bumping around near the bottom of league 2.
Look if you don't like the way the club is being run that's fine, but unlike the rest of the "largely anti-Pozzo" posters you do make these extreme posts that don't help your case !
I guess I'd argue that the Pozzos make excellent cheap appointments and choose to ruthlessly remove them the moment their effectiveness dips, rather than waiting until it's too late, which is why we have spent most of their time in the prem despite not spending a lot of money on transfers (Sarr excepted).

How else do you explain our improved performance under their ownership ? You've already decided they sign **** players and appoint **** managers ! I think pretty much every manager they have appointed has served a purpose for a period of time, maybe Ivic and Sanino excepted.

Even Ivic left us in the play-offs (?) and Sannino left us top 2. I think the only managers who can categorically be labelled as failures are QSF (2, electric boogaloo), Pearson, and maybe McKinlay?

I’m disappointed by the lack of posts about the women’s team. By definition they must be toxic/rancid/rotten as they are part of the club too. Can we please have a few more examples of this.

Really weird post. If you aren’t a football club owner then you can’t comment? Best close the forum down.

And personally I think toxic/rancid are absolutely accurate ways to describe the culture that Pozzo has given our club. We are repellant from top to bottom.

I think you are defining ‘mercenaries’ in the wrong manner. Sure, footballers get paid a lot of money. But the difference being, for me anyway, is that most of them want to win. A footballing mercenary is someone who couldn’t care less about winning and losing and picks up their pay check.

You don’t really hear it but lots of players, even at the top level, hate the game. But it’s such a well paying job and they don’t know anything else.

You can easily spot those ones. We have a lot of them.

Does Pozzo have anything whatsoever to do with them? Genuine question I don’t know. If he doesn’t then maybe his poison doesn’t infiltrate to that team. You can be rubbish and still be likeable.

Duxbury's theory that Watford managers will be at the club for a maximum of two years before they're either sacked or poached shows how little the manager's role is valued by this arrogant twit. Duxbury out! I don't care who the next coach is, nothing will change while this bungling turd is pulling the strings
