Heptathlon high jump gripping. At least it was, until Italian TV switched randomly to swimming heats.

It's a shame that, like you, that was my first thought when I watched that race.

For me the giveaway was when she popped into Boots for 5minutes,had a cigarette, two pints of mild,a fish supper and an ice cream cornet and still beat the record by a country mile!

Scintillating dressage competition there, real "edge of the seat" stuff!

Charlotte's transistion from the p'ssage into the extended trot was a thing of beauty, I thought.

    Team Silver medal for GB.

Blimey, Bryony Page has just won a silver for trampolining. First medal of any colour in wither the Olympics, or World Champs!

May be a record breaker, but not all that implausible when you think about it, I make it about an average of 12.7 mph (previous record 12.6) which is still less than the marathon record at 12.8 mph, and over a fraction of the distance.

We're going in the skipping later and the men's hopscotch team has a outside chance of a bronze.

Ha ha, yes. But I still remember it being a regular part of Grandstand on a Saturday afternoon when I was a youngster.

Is Murray going to get another gold?

Plays Del Potro in the final who will probably be knackered after a long classic against Nadal.

Another gold and world record in the cycling - Laura's Trott 3rd good medal.

The thing I love about the Olympics is the fact that you find yourself totally immersed in sports you have zero interest in at any other time. Case in point - track cycling which I am slightly obsessed with right now.

Watching the gold medal match in the womens team sabre final between Russia and Ukraine. One of the co-commentators just said 'Willy needs to come out tonight'.

The scoring boards were having an issue and a gentleman known to Martin Bell as Willy of Longines came on to sort it out.... Bob Ballard (diving) also likes to indulge in sneaking in double entendres and song titles into his commentary.

Crowd in the Olympic stadium tonight is disappointing, so many empty seats.

BBC will be disappointed there was no "Super Saturday" but still Mo won and Rutherford/Ennis got medals.

Another silver in the swimming too..

Oh and a 4th place (must be on for a record!)

No surprise that Rutherford and Ennis turned out to be one hit wonders. Both average performers at a time when the quality in their events is poor. Though I will say, that Belgian girl smashes 5 PB's in 7 events? If she was Russian, questions would be asked.

Farah, legend. Laura Trott - the things I'd do.

    Brilliant run from Mo Farah.

He's the second best Mo ever.

Since London 2012, Rutherford was Commonwealth Champion, European Champion twice and is the current World Champion and topped the Diamond league rankings last year.

    Hardly a "one hit".

Ennis's scores have been bettered by 3 or 4 others but 2 or 3 of them are likely to have been drugged enhanced. Perhaps only Kluft was a truly better heptathlon athete.

I think looking many long standing world records in many sports, or the current low but winning performances these days has a lot to do with the fact that it was far easier to get away with drug cheating 10, 20, 30 years ago, so it gives an unfair comparison.

Meh. Winning poxy events like the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships isn't the Olympics though is it? Rutherford, like a couple of other British 'shoe-ins' at this Olympics have talked a good game but have ultimately disappointed.

Hemel's Max Whitlock takes our 1st gold in the Gymnastics for 100 plus years!

Also after all the fuss about golf in the Olympics we win that too!

I thought I was the only person in the UK to dislike Jessica Ennis, apparently not. Another kick in the teeth for the steel city this weekend.

Beyond me. Small matter of a baby in-between 2012 and now, but an amazing career.

If certain people don't like her maybe it's to do with Ched Evans.

Murray really struggling at the minute. Del Potro has won 3 games in a row and could be about to win his 4th.

Great couple of days of sport for GB, incredible to think we only won one gold in Atlanta 96!

In non-GB news, I really hope Gatlin doesn't win the 100m tonight. I think it would cause irreparable damage to athletics if a two-time doper wins the top event.

The first Olympics I remember was 1984, that year up until Barcelona 1992 we were generally tinpot but 1996 in Atlanta we hit rock bottom and something had to be done. Although we got two fewer golds in Athens than Sydney our improvement since the Atlanta debacle has been very encouraging, I read a BBC website piece before this Olympics which said that usually a nation does worse in the Olympics following one they hosted, the fact that we should more or less equal what we achieved in London indicates to me that our improvement that is likely to be permanent.

Why on earth couldn't something similar ever be done in football, after say, the debacles of Euro 1988, 1992 and 2000 and WC 2010, and failure to qualify for WC 1994 and Euro 2008, just to name a few? Especially after major resurgences in other sports, including rugby, tennis and cricket.

Maybe something will finally be done after the latest embarrassment this summer, but I'm not holding my breath.

In those sports the national teams matter most - in football the Premier league is all dominating and controlling...
