Of all the pop-up, soulless modern stadia, this has to be the most depressing. Architecturally, a superb stadium but it was not designed to host football. In their seedy owners' desperate attempt to get something on the cheap, West Ham fans have been well and truly screwed and I have every sympathy for long standing Hammers, evicted from their beloved Boleyn and the surrounding grubby but real landmarks, who end up scrapping with the tourists who make up the numbers at the 'London Stadium'. There were more WHU fans getting the train from Ricky than Hornets - including one muppet in West Ham nylon who asked his equally gormless chum how long each half was! Being of a certain vintage, I have always had a soft spot for West Ham, but with that chimp in his Russian hat and slapper Brady running the place, I'd love to see them go down.

None of which should detract from a superb performance from the Golden Boys. Bring on Man U

One of the things that's often said to be what makes Engilsh football (not just the premiership) so good are the grounds and the fact that the fans are so close to the pitch. It's often something overseas players remark upon compares to a lot of stadiums in Europe where the fans are miles away from the pitch. That gap where the running track is is just hideous.

Just a little thought about Payet's Rabona thingummy. Is it really easier to do that than cross it normally with his left foot?

Of course. Most things I've seen about yesterday have been about how bad West Ham were.

It is really patronising..... why shouldn't we bear West Ham? We are in our second seson in the premier league after surviving comfortably last season and they are hardly top six material.

Makes sense. They conceded 4 absolute howlers.

He hasn't got a left foot, that's why he did it.

The vast majority of what I saw yesterday (and today) was about Man City v Man Utd. You really wouldn't think there was a full programme of fixtures across four divisions.

I understand why everyone was waxing lyrical about payets 'rabona' but why lanzinis ?he missed by miles so what was so great about it? And when Okaka scored his offside goal was I imagining it or did Jonathan Pearce on motd say cabaye ?

That goal against Romania was left footed I think?

It was, but I class it as Ray Wilkins calls it the 'Ol Swinger'.

If he`s only got one foot then it can't be a ribena, just a regular kick.

  14. Holebas stuck with the men on his side of the box, no point in him getting drawn out of position too.

Well there was an obvious point, he could've followed his man who scored a free header! Still, at least you're happy that he didn't leave his side of the box...

Look, he played well, particularly in the second half when he was more disciplined defensively but it doesn't mean he wasn't at fault for the first.

To be honest, what is the point of having 3 centre back in the side if none of them are there to meet a corner that came down exactly where a corner is expected to come down.

Also, the issue of whether a full back is/is not marking a player who scores regularly with his head seems secondary to "should it not have been a centre back marking him"?

Edit: This is definitely not my best written post, but I know what I mean!

    Isn't Pearce a WHU fan?

You may be correct about Okaka/Cabaye but I'm sure he was calling Zaza "Tata"-what a steel!

No he's a Bristol City fan and he mispronounced Kaboul as it was his header.

I do. The stadium is terrible and their fans are arseholes.

  20. Every Watford player, even Gomes, could have come up and gome with Antonio, but like Holebas, they had other jobs to do.

It is clear you are not keen, fair enough, just so long as we know that is where you are starting from.

In this freeze frame, you can see that the defender at the top of the picture is keeping Okaka onside, the grass pattern continues from the 6 yard line and it's quite clear that Okaka is nearer the six yard line than the defender is.

I don't think it's clear at all. There were similar arguments over Forestieri's non-goal at Brighton a few years back. It's close, certainly, but that angle isn't conclusive in the slightest. Arms don't count but it only needs his torso or head to be an inch ahead for the decision to be correct. Of course it may have been inadvertently right - I doubt the lino on the nearside could have seen Byram.

  25. Unless the lino was exactly in line I think that was too close to call

I tend to think he was onside

To be honest even while West Ham were on top we were slicing through there defence with some awesome approach work. and could've added several more.

Zero creativity last season to this and in theory it should only get better .... my head just can't take it!

yup you'd have to be right in line to see it.

no complaint about the decision though, you're either onside or you're off, there is no middle ground. On that photo it's at least a few inches

  28. The sense of entitlement of West Ham fans on social media makes me laugh

Sure Poyet and Lanzini are very good players, the rest of their team are nothing particularly special, and their defence was dog 5hit Saturday

Holebas was with Collins, Capoue went with Antonio to a degree, but was the wrong side. Behrami and Cathcart were with that new fella at the near post, Britos went with their first runner. Deeney made the effort to get there.

Kaboul, however, went with nobody, and marked nobody. In my view, he was to blame.

Ok it was nice but while all the media spunk over Payet's rabona, Deeney's curled beauty's no more than just a lob or chip in their eyes.

A rabona's not that special, we all did them in kickabouts as kids

Deeneys goal reminded me of Hoddles chip over Steve Sherwood many years ago which still get plays, difference was Troys was better as he had the angle to contend with!

After Deeney's goal, did anyone see the chap who ran from the concourse to celebrate in the aisle just above the seating area, only for him to slip on the metal flooring and go flying up in the air... landing on his head?

    That was me.

Even Deeney has made comment about changing from 3-5-2 to 4-3-3 helped the team.

"We have had a few days to work together, but a lot of the boys have been on international duty as well. But now, moving forward, we should really be more dominant, more solid, which I think showed today when we changed from the 3-5-2 to the 4-3-3, it was more or less effortless."

Only just caught the brilliantly witty preview from Clive just as the thread's been moved to Match Day! Top notch stuff, belated congrats.

    Also lovely self-fulfilling prophecy here:

"Hopefully Iggy will get to do one of his finger-to-heaven knee slide specials right into one of our corner flags at some point."
