It wasn't a joke - Hodson made a decision to bring the guy down knowing he was beaten. He'd have known a yellow card was inevitable. If that were a WBA player hauling down Graham in the same position after 3 mins are you seriously telling me you'd have been jumping up and down yelling "Tell him off ref!" ?

    Spot on.

He did. A spectacularly poor dive shown clearly on the live feed we were all watching from on here!

As above, the tv feed showed different. Hodson pulled him down though I'll not deny the attacker was waiting for it.

Again, Mariappa was done for position and brought him down. It was a poor effort by our defender. Moore had nothing to do with it.

Spot on. No excuses for this. Our worst defeat in any competition in a decade!

Nigel Miller is an old mate/colleague/referee partner of mine. No way is he anti-WFC.

That said, I think I was better!

No mention of his failure to send off Moore then. Worst decision I've seen against us since Attwell.

Booking a player for his first foul in the first 5 mins is a joke. And no one will change my opinion on that.

You can buy him a beer when you meet up with him at a Col United game.

So in your book a player can get away with anything so long as (a) it's his first foul and (b) it's within the first 5 minutes of the game starting? Wow.

I know I'm taking what you've said too literally but sometimes that needs to be done to show how silly a concept something is. If anything players are more likely to make postional mistakes leading to necessary fouls in the first 5 mins than at almost any other time in the match. When they happen they can't go unpunished or it sets the whole game up wrong.

Fark me sideways. It wasnt a goal scoring opportunity, it wasnt dangerous. It was an advantage to West Brom to get a free kick in that area, as was proved. It was naive challenge, at worst. The ref should have given Hodson a warning. End of.

So the rule is now "a player can get away with anything so long as (a) it's his first foul, (b) it's within the first 5 minutes of the game starting and (c) it's neither dangerous or denying a goal scoring opportunity."

This is getting quite complex Mr Potato. Why not just accept that players who commit bookable offences should get a yellow card, whether it's the first 5 seconds or the last 5 seconds? If you were arguing that it wasn't a yellow card foul then fair enough - that's a matter of opinion. But you're not. You're putting forward this bizarre (but I'll admit reasonably widely held especially among former-player tv pundits) idea that no one should be booked in the first few minutes of a game and that it's a failure of the referee if it happens.

I don't think it was a yellow card offence. If it was a goalscoring opportunity maybe, but it wasn't. It was a possible cross into the box when there was only one guy in there.

It doesn't really matter. We would still have lost.

Jesus man, you're not the ex missus in disguise are you ?

I think I said it wasnt a goal scoring opportunity or a dangerous challenge. It was a naive challenge from a player caught out of position. And yes I do think it was too early to show the yellow card, for an innocuous challenge. If Hodson had denied a goal scoring opportunity or had caught the WBA player with an elbow or taken the WBA player out with a high tackle, book him or send him off, irrespective of the time. But Hodson didnt. The challenge didnt exactly give us any advantage, did it ?

    I didn't see the play.

    That said...

The subjectivity of not awarding a card for a play early in the game probably only would be recognized by most refs for the persistent infringement type of fouls that accumulate over a game and result in a card. At 5 minutes in, it would be hard to 'persistently infringe' enough for a ref to consider carding and then not doing so. Any other type of foul that deserved a booking would and should just get it.

Referees seem to have certain things which are a yellow/red card anytime they occur.

If I was a ref, I would try not to consider the phase of the game when doling out discipline. Inconsistency of rules enforcement is very frustrating and confusing for players on the field. Also, think about the ramifications if everyone agreed that a yellow card wouldn't be given in the first 5 minutes...brutal bludgeonings for everyone!!!

[Not a very concise post, but it's still quite early in the morning for me.]

It was a clear yellow card. I dont why there is such a fuss about it.

If it was a clear yellow card then so was Moores tackle from behind on Hodson, and so was a Eustace foul a couple of minutes after this, both which were far worse than the Hodson foul. However, the ref deemed neither of them was so based on this I do see why there is a fuss being made.

I suspect that the ref having previously given Hodson a final warning instead of a second yellow card went in Moore's favour.

    "We need a real keeper."

I cannot see how Loach and/or Lee are not Championship quality keepers; yes they make mistakes but so do all of our back four and midfield!!

PotGuy where is the money coming from to fulfil your fantasist notion that we could buy a Robinson/Given or a Foster or do you think that the Championship/League One and Two are awash with quality "real" keepers who would be beating a door to come to us?

I think we are quite lucky actually to have 2 keepers of the quality of Loach and Lee; they're not perfect but show me a Keeper (who we can afford) who is!

(With apologies to Wazza who was misquoted in an earlier version of this post)

It looked like it from the back of the away stand mate. I've seen it again and it wasn't, but I wrote that just after I got back.

Awww, I'm sorry that I have a mind of my own. Next time I'll just agree with everyone else xx

Loach is rubbish, I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until we buy a keeper capable of getting through a game without making a goal-conceding error.

Do people seriously think Lee is better than Loach, lucky they shut Shenley down a few years ago - you would be banged up as mentally insane.

Lee belongs in the circus, end of.

I've just quickly scanned the thread again Bobby and I can't see anyone who actually HAS said that Lee is better than Loach (not even PotGuy who is obviously a fan)

Where has anyone actually writen that or are you just trying to stir things up a bit (NO PROBLEM if you are btw!!)

One last point though - if Shenley was still open I think you might be first in the queue with a preposterous statement like your last one!!

Lee has his faults but he's not half as bad as some of his critics say he is ffs!!
