Now we truly know what this team is capable of, it would be catastrophic if we went on to get relegated at the end of the season. Survival depends on our mentality
Obvious statement is obvious, but Pearson got that spot on yesterday. Liverpool were insistent on utilising the flanks night matter what in the first half, and if it wasn’t working on one they’d pass back to VVD/Lovren to switch it to the other flank.... which it wouldn’t work and they’d go back to the other flank again and so on and so on, before playing a ball to OxC, or another to attempt a quick switch of the play which went out for throw ins or a long ball into the box which Kaba was always getting ahead of Firmino. That’s purely down to the shape and discipline from us, always having 2 v 3 scenarios at least, not allowing that extra ball to bypass us in the first half in particular. Genuine question, is this our greatest ever result?

I have not a single doubt Sarr will end up way better than Richarlison and will go on to play for one of the top teams in Europe - Liverpool, Utd, Real Madrid, PSG...
Thanks Willis, does anyone know apart from Liverpool in 1982/3 and YESTERDAY (still reliving it) whether we have ever beaten the team top of the (top) league before?
I thought he looked like he knew Lovren is nowhere near the standard required and was too focused on trying to mop up his mistakes which just made his own performance worse.
Oh yeah that could have played a part. Lovren is nowhere near Liverpool standard! Didn't he call himself one of the best centre backs in the world not long ago?
Awesome. Sarr phenomenal. I really liked his first goal which although a tap in showed great striker instinct and speed to get on the end of the cross. He also looked really intelligent the way he was holding his runs to stay onside. It wasn’t a one man show and the pressing from the test of the team right to the end was breathtaking. Really hope GD is ok, should have been a free kick. If we can stay up I think we have the makings of a truly great team next season under NP with a couple of signings. The thought of a confident Watford with GD and Sarr down the wings for a sustained run is one to savour.
I presume Gomez was injured - he seems to be first choice. Lovern probably played due to the fact we had Deeney up front but Troy dominated him.
Christ. We really did a number on Liverpool yesterday, didn't we? I can't recall us so comprehensively outclassing a top 6 outfit since our promotion back to the PL. Phenomenal result, what is even more important is the lift this win will give the squad. I won't go as far as saying that yesterda will be season defining (because we could still easily go down) but if we do beat relegation then this will be a massive reason why. Massive game against Palace next weekend. I expect a tougher test than against the Bin Dippers. COYH!
Weren't Southampton top when we beat them 7 - 1 (in the League Cup, of course)? Also, we beat Nottingham Forest, also in the League Cup, 4 - 1 when they were current European Champions. They may well have been top at the time.
Yes. Limiting a team who had won 18 in a row, scored in every league game for a year, and were behind for 40mins, to one attempt on target in 95 mins was probably the greatest achievement of the match.
Hopefully there will be a massive Liverpool reaction next week and they smash Muff 6-0 in front of a baying Kop
I think the answer from the replies to my question must be we have only twice beaten the team currently standing top of the top division! both times Liverpool! unless anyone knows differently!
Off the top of my head, Everton were also top of the table when we beat them 2-1 at Vicarage Road in March 1987. They went on to win the title.
Not knocking them but I don’t think Liverpool had any choice but to be gracious did they? There was no luck, no dodgy ref or VAR decisions, no missed chances (from them) no last minute winners. It was just a comprehensive beating that no team in the land could even try and argue with. That’s what makes it all the more surreal.
One of the TV interviewers yesterday was trying to get VVD to admit that it was bringing in Lovren that made the defence so poor. He didn't concede that, but came close.
People have picked out everyone except Foster as outstanding, and everyone except Ben was. Ben didn't get a chance to do anything exceptional, of course. My picks are Femenia and Massina for negating Pool's wing-backs and wide strikers, the most dangerous part of Liverpool's team, Cathcart and Kabs for dominating the centre of defence and Hughes for his pressing and prompting. But I could have picked six others, inclding Battling Bob who's not usually one of my favourites.
Ah! Good memory – the Everton game was on TV on the Sunday afternoon so presumably Liverpool played, and won, the previous day.
Sarr & Richardson on the wings, Deeney & Vydra up the middle would have been formidable. Lets hope the thirst for short term cash hasn't cost us a place in the PL.
It's obvious the benefit having Sarr in the team, but Kiko is a massive upgrade in Dawson or Mariappa. He is a transformed player under Pearson. Unrecognisable from the wafty, lightweight liability at the start of the season. He now actually epitomises our toughness and resilience. I have to admit, I wrote him off under Javi and QSF but he's first choice when he plays like this.
