I wonder if the players had more confidence in each other because of the personnel changes made yesterday! hence a cracking performance and result!

I think Deulofeu has blown more cold than hot this season, and can be easily replaced by Pereyra. They're very similar players - Gerard probably has more natural talent, but Pereyra offers more to the team and has far better decision making. Sarr would be a far bigger miss (as we've seen) and what he offers can't be replicated by Pereyra.

Big shoutout to Kiko Femenía. Was struggling for form at the start of the season. He was even left out of matchday squads due to his mental health problems. He's been superb since Nigel Pearson took over, looks like a completely different player. Great to see.

  8. Anyone else still feel on 86 minutes that we'd probably still draw 3-3?

No but I was close to that, after what happened against Everton I only felt truly confident we'd win when it got to 85.

Even so I was a bit nervous because it was imperative that we kept our clean sheet as goal difference could be crucial come the end of the season (although that probably sounds silly, because if we meet even half that standard for the rest of the season, goal difference shouldn't even be a factor!).

You did well to feel safe at 85 minutes. I had to get to 92 minutes before I started feeling confident of not losing.

    I had:

    Watford to win 11/2

    Watford to win 3-1 66/1

Watford to win 3-1 and Deeney to score first 275/1

A late Liverpool consolation goal would therefore have been nice, but hey-ho, goal difference and all that...

We've picked up our share of wins against 'Big 6' sides, and they're great and all, but the previous ones were against 'fallen giants', games we were almost expected to win. This time? We've only gone and beat one of the biggest teams in the world at the peak of their powers! I'll admit to feeling a bit jealous at teams like Palace and Newcastle for their wins against City last year, now it's their turn to feel the same about us!*

*Whenever they stop rejoicing at Liverpool losing that is! ;)

I think the curving ball from Deeney only curved and was perfectly weighted because it clipped Robertsons heel as it went past him which took it exactly to where Sarr would have wanted it and at exactly the right pace. Not that I am complaining

Saturday we played our best possible team in the best "discovered" formation. This team and formation is incredibly effective, but there is no wiggle room with it. It's not really too interchangeable.

Having said that, although Geri is a big loss, it's one we could possibly absorb with either Pererya or Welbeck.

The key is having Sarr on the pitch and playing at the level he currently is. He is clearly is top player, and I'm amazed at his development in just a few short months.

Sarr makes it happen up front, but it's not all about him. The switch with Doucoure and Hughes is also a masterstroke. Having Kiko on the pitch too is very important. Kabasele is also a vital player, plus you've got Foster who can win you points by making these wonder saves.

If you put all these elements together, then you see what a good side Watford can be. The evidence was there for all to see on Saturday. That was no fluke, and I hope the side will gain confidence from it and believe in themselves more. Once you believe, I mean really believe in something, you can move mountains.

Ok, the team has now been disrupted because of the enforced Geri injury, but as I mentioned, one which opens the door for Welbeck, who I really believe in as a player. Ok, he's injury prone too, but right now there is an opportunity for him to stake a claim and I fully expect him to take that, sharing duties with Bobby.

But as we know, once we start changing things around, the Kiko, Sarr, Geri & Hughes injuries have all derailed us. It's imperative these players remain fit for the remaining 10 games. If that is the case, and Geri is the only key player we lose in the run-in, I think we should do quite well.

Plenty of credit goes to Pearson and Shakespeare for understanding the Doucoure/Hughes switch. No other manager/coach saw that but it's key in when we play well.

Giraldi gets plenty on stick on this forum, and some of it deserved, especially with his high profile pitch-side appearances, but people have to acknowledge he identified Sarr and Richarlison, who are two top players and have and will bring a lot of money to the club. No other club was interested in Sarr, not for the price we got him at. That shows huge conviction and looks now like a shrewd investment. That guy is worth double now, and when you destroy a team like Liverpool, then he's going to be on everyone's radar. £80m will be the starting point for any negotiation in the summer, and for sure, there will be plenty of interest.

    Agree with all of this.

IF we stay up, I really hope we get to see one full season of Sarr. He will definitely be sold if we go down but with how good he is there is every chance he could go in the summer even if we stay up. He is an incredible talent.

Are you sure no other club was interested in him? I seem to recall rumours linking him with Arsenal and Palace along with us. Our announcement even says "The Hornets have beaten off strong competition to secure the services of the 21-year-old winger from Rennes, who has agreed a five-year contract with the Hornets."

Plus I'd argue that he wasn't plucked from nowhere - lots of people knew about him and his ability. I even wrote about him before the World Cup! https://totalfootballanalysis.com/match-analysis/tactical-preview/fifa-world-cup-2018-senegal

I suspect we all treated those rumours with the same distain that we treated the "Man Utd were after Oulare" and "Barcelona wanted Penaranda" rumours ie propaganda to suggest we hadn't just signed players that no-one else wanted.

    Agree totally.

However, I would point out that Geri went off after about a 35 minutes when it was 0-0. The fact that we won 3-0 shows that we can indeed "absorb" his loss.

It does mean we have to keep up the cohesion and work rate when replacements are called upon. But the players have seen what hard work and working together can do. I fully expect Pereyra/Welbeck and any other squad member to be willing and able to step up if required.

We have proved that, on our day, we can beat anyone. There are no acceptable excuses if we end up relegated now.

Sarr had been linked to Arsenal for some time. Anyone with a slight interest in French football knew about him and his quality.

He even turned down Barca before joining Rennes:

...unless Sarr and Deeney get injured/sent off and we are forced to play a front line of Pereyra, Gray, Pussetto (I'd assumed that Welbeck would initially be used but won't last more than a game).

I said no other club were interested in him for the price we paid. That's why we got him. No one else, as far as I'm aware, put in a bid to match ours, this is why he came to Watford on the final day of the window as Rennes wanted the biggest price possible.

I still wouldn't accept that as an excuse to go down

The tactics and performance of the whole team was outstanding on Saturday. Yes, we would be, and have been, blunt going forward without Sarr. But we should have more than enough to stay up if the players show the same effort, cohesion and belief they showed on Saturday.

You might not accept it as an excuse but we would go down. The previous 5 games have shown how impotent we are without Sarr. Take him out plus the focal point that is Deeney, and GD, and add in Pussetto and Gray...we wouldn't be winning enough games.

I notice he played in every game for the full 90 minutes in WC 2018 when Senegal were unluckily knocked out at the first hurdle by the narrowest of margins, but I don't remember anything about him at all (but I didn't know much about the Senegal side, apart from Mane and our Niang so I didn't know who to look out for). How did he play and did he contribute much? Were there glimpses of the great player that we're seeing here?

  34. sydney_horn

    Yes, you are right.

But the squad players should be capable of getting 13ish points from the remaining games. A lot of our poor performances before Pearson were simply down to a lack of confidence. It was purely mental weaknesses that also showed themselves against Villa, Brighton and Everton.

If the players have the belief and want it enough I think that it is achievable with or without Sarr.

But I hope Sarr stays fit so we don't have to find out!!!

There were glimpses but from what I recall I was pretty underwhelmed compared to what I'd seen him do in France.
