I've only ever known a handful of QPR fans in my life so it definitely doesn't register as much as L*ton for me, although perhaps Harrow-based 'Orns and Rs might say differently? (Might explain why Albert Adomah has such a good record against us!) I wasn't calling QPR a derby, I was pointing out that the QPR fans were unhappy enough at having a L*ton fan as ref even though that 'derby' surely isn't anywhere near ours with them up the road...
I actually thought the referee had a good game, overall. There is no VAR so the dodgy offside call was down to the lineman, who I was not so impressed with. Having said that, you are right, a referee should never be put in the position where he can be compromised in that way.
I wasn't casting blame, just describing cause and effect. A decent pass from JP would have resulted in a goal, corner, goal kick or pen, and QPR wouldn't have scored immediately afterwards. Of course everything subsequent would have been different and we might have lost 7-3, but it's undeniable that JP's mistake cost us a good chance to take the lead and gave them a good chance (which they took) instead.
Yeah he looked to play an eye of the needle ball in to Asprilla when he was better off whipping it in.
Sorry not fully up to speed on this, but for how long or for how many phases can a ref go back and disallow a goal for a previous offside.? I understand the basic concept but for that disallowed goal the ball was cleared with around 5 defenders, Sarr never even touched the ball at the first cross.... Surely there has to be a clear advantage "gained" via the first offside call to be able to pull it back 20 seconds later.? Crazy rule...
Or was he just going by this put the flag up when the play stops thing assistants seems to be told to do ?
If Sarr was in an offside position on the original cross, it was the correct call as he jumped and attempted to head the ball, making him an active player. If I had to guess about the delay on the flag, I'd say because the ball was cleared, the assistant was waiting to see if a counter attack and an advantage would form for QPR. As it didn't, he raised the flag. He wouldn't need to delay like they do in the PL, as that's for VAR purposes.
No but at least I had the consolation of celebrating a couple of goals. Yesterday was disappointing but I still found it less tedious than the matches I dragged myself to in the Premier League. If that makes me whatever you choose to call me, so be it.

Yes, Sarr was active as he jumped to challenge for the cross that was cleared to Kayembe who hit it straight back into the goal, so if Sarr was in an offside position, it was the correct call. However, I think it's the ref's job to decide whether to play advantage when the flag is raised, so he should have flagged as soon as Sarr attempted to head the ball. At least that would have prevented us thinking we'd scored...

The relevant bit of the rule states that: A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by: interfering with an opponent by: clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent The QPR defender wasn't right next to Sarr (he was a good couple of yards away with clear daylight between them) and still managed to head the cross away under no pressure.
Yeah, don't necessarily disagree, as it avoids confusion. What I would say in the assistant's defence is that I don't think you can say with certainty that Sarr's position and attempt to play the ball had no impact on the defender's ability to play the ball. Remove Sarr from the picture and the defender has more time to assess the situation and may have cleared more effectively. The laws are also (messily) clarified further below: an offence is committed against a player in an offside position who is already playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the offside offence is penalised as it has occurred before the foul challenge Referring to a play being fouled after an offside offence, but the wording of 'playing or attempting to play the ball, suggests Sarr's action would qualify.
What I would say is that even if it were offside by the letter of the law, it was so tight, that would you really expect most of those types of decisions to be given without VAR? I doubt the QPR fans would have been complaining too much had it been given if they are being honest with themselves
I don't think there is no impact at all in the defender, it's a question of whether it's enough to have disadvantaged him. Given the modern tendency to give the benefit of the doubt to attackers and the gap between the two players, I'd be surprised if this is the kind of thing that's supposed to be caught by offside laws. Much as I can't say the defender wasn't impacted, you can't say he definitely was, it's not like he and Sarr were wrestling with each other! And you've lost me completely with the second chunk of text, there was no foul in this passage of play at all!
If it's had any impact whatsoever on the defender, then it's an offside offence. I'd struggle to argue that having an attacker leap up in my immediate field of view would have zero impact on my split second decision making, when trying to clear the ball. I'd agree with you if Sarr was stood still and just watched the ball float over his head. Notice when an assistant's flag usually goes up on an offside, when a player is played through. The flag will go up when the player makes a clear movement towards the ball, because that's when it becomes an offside offence. For example if Sarr was played through 1-on-1 (offside), ran up to the ball and had a complete air shot, he would still be penalised. The wording about the foul isn't the relevant part of the text, I was referring to the implication in the passage that attempting to play the ball counts as an offside offence.
That's pretty damning. Gasper is another Bayat Bargin Bin Special who we paid over the hill for. He is that, over the hill. Slow, lethargic has no desire to get forward and do the things the team needs him to do. He'll start on Tuesday though. Edwards has a fine crop of hair at the moment but I can see him going bald with frustration if has to constantly shout and scream at the same player. Manaj just summed up his entire worth so far by trudging off the pitch - no urgency whatsoever. Things can only get better once you hit rock bottom so they say.
Yes, I agree that attempting to play the ball is an offside offence if the right criteria are met. The FA released a whole bunch of scenarios about offside and unfortunately nothing like this incident was covered, can't link to it on my phone as goes straight to a pdf. But the closest one in description would be the below, which would fit what Sarr did. It's very clear that the line of sight stuff only refers to goalkeepers, not defenders. The defender clearly does play the ball as he manages to head it out of the penalty area. An attacker in an offside position (A) runs towards the ball but he does not prevent the opponent from playing or being able to play the ball. (A) is not challenging an opponent (B) for the ball.
