Update:

So I actually have an update on this one. After we made our 2nd offer, the Vazquez spoke to the Palermo boss and said he wanted a transfer. Since then we have not actually made another offer but remain interested. However Roma are now interested in the player too. Roma cannot afford to sign Vazquez until they offload a couple of players, mainly Gervinho, Destro and you guessed it Doumbia. We remain interested in Doumbia.

According to Italian media Palermo's president has told Vazquez that he will not be sold this summer unless a ridiculous offer comes in, but that he can leave the club next summer.

So I have been told that we have cooled our interest for now, but expect this to return to the fore next summer if he is not sold to Roma.

He looks boss. Considering that in pre-season creative midfielders appear to be the main area of concern it would be nice to still get him on board now.

 

It would be great to get him on board but I don't think we are prepared to pay what it would take to get him here.

Palermo have said he is not going anywhere until the end of the season, could be key for our european charge next season.

 

Would be pointless signing him. He'd come and not play

He'll be moving to a biggun this summer. Should have stumped up the asking price a few months back, in hindsight.

He's one of the highest rated players in Serie A . He probably has never heard of Watford , or ever will.

Not this one again! Whilst I'm sure that it was posted on here in good faith, this rumour couldn't have been more far fetched.

No publication/website anywhere has linked us with this player (unless you include this website!). Bearing in mind we were linked with over 100 players over the summer, it's pretty obvious that transfer rumour sites will link players to teams for the most spurious reasons, yet no-one got a sniff of this rumour linking us to Vazquez.

This guy is rated at 30 million euros and being linked to a host of top teams across Europe (see links below).

The idea that we snuck in a cheeky 8 million euro bid with Battochio and Fabbrini thrown in is laughable! WDSport and the Observer have given some good insights into our transfer dealings over the summer (eg Gokhan Inler being considered but rejected as too similar to what we had, Doumbia & Immers never being a target etc) but neither of these two local publications with their good contacts in the club heard anything about a bid that would have smashed our transfer record...

Finally, the Palermo president is not exactly shy about speaking to the press as he's already confirmed interest from Chelsea, Milan, Juventus, Inter but somehow he omitted to mention having not one, but two, firm offers from Watford, both of which grossly undervalued his star man? I'd suggest that's unlikely in the extreme.

Great player, but never linked to Watford by anything other than wishful thinking.

 

I trust the Pozzos to get him.

 

You're the one who got really angry in the summer about this didn't you? Don't know why, harmless rumour that we were sniffing around him.

 

I don't believe there was anything in this, but your post does raise a question. Why shouldn't a top half premier league club be interested in Vasquez?

If it were Everton would it still be ridiculous?

 

Or Chelsea? Or some other bottom half team?

Ahhh Steve never believed me with this one. I only passed on what I heard from a journo friend, apparently that makes me a lying ****. For what it's worth I do believe he would come here and was told he was prepared to hear the pozzos out in the summer. With our great position now I imagine we might not have much convincing to do.

 

He's different gravy, no doubt about that. My only problem is where do we play him? He's a CAM/secondary striker and has played in the secondary striker role for the majority of this season and last season. We don't really play anyone in that kind of position (the only one I can really think of is Deeney). Vazquez won't be replacing Deeney and there's no point in bringing him in to play at CAM when you've got Abdi and Jurado in the squad. If we stick him on the wing then we're doing to him what we're doing to Abdi and Jurado which I really don't want to see.

 

We can't sign him out of fairness to other teams. With him and Capoue, the number of nutmegs per game would increase exponentially...and we'd be the new Chelsea or Manure, as in hated.

SPURS 'IN TALKS FOR VAZQUEZ'

Tottenham are in talks with Palermo for striker Franco Vazquez, according to the Serie A club’s president Maurizio Zamparini.

“It’s definitely more likely Vazquez will go to England – I’m asking for 25 million euros for him,” Zamparini told Corriere dello Sport.

“He could even do well with Leicester. Milan and Roma were interested [too].

“I’m in touch with Tottenham and I’ve asked them for 25 million euros, so let’s see.”

Don't worry. He's joining a big club. Which is what everyone expected with the exception of the usual suspects.

 

Maybe we should resurrect our £6 million plus two unwanted squad players offer from last season? Instead of Battochio and Fabbrini, we could offer them Belkalem and Murray?
