Since the BoE lowered interest rates in March 2009, scoring rates in T20s & especially 50 over matches have increased markedly.

So I believe it is interest rates (& mortgage rates) having an impact on cricket.

So "a century" in cricket now should be moved to say 148 ? Half century at 74 ?

An interesting & satisfyingly confusing proposal.

Separately, a nice win for Zummerzet, with Twirler Leach bagging an 8for.

    Still time to catch Surrey?

Sam Curran to open the batting next test...cannot do any worse!?

Not a bad score from 86-6. Be interesting to see how Jimmy bowls in these conditions. Be handy to nip a couple out this evening

    Credit to Curran.

    MotM then dropped.

Responds by (massively) top scoring from #8.

    Like young Pope as well.

Ed Smith conned a job as a journo with his vacuous drivel.

No more cut out to be a selector.

Thanks to Moeen we might get a lead!

England 21 behind overnight. I imagine India are confident in getting 10 wickets before we reach that total.

If we can get another 20 or 30 I think that might be enough. Great Test match though, a pitch with something in it for all types of bowler but also runs can be scored if you get your head down.

Sam Curran to get another 50?

Must have got a good percentage of our runs!

250 plus might well be enough with the spin likely to come into play.

    Broad is seriously fired up.

When he s like this, he can go through a batting order like a dose of the clap in a medieval whorehouse.

Always better when ball is on top.

Cant stand these Australian tests where both sides score 500+ Dec in first innings

    What a catch from Stokes.

Typically when we do win, we do it in 4 days on a sunday so there's nothing other than this bloody forum to occupy my mind at work !

Probably 6 months to a year too late to be honest but what a player he's been. 12000 test runs and 158 consecutive Tests is an incredible achievement. Some big shoes to fill

A true great as his numbers prove .

Probably the right time - hopefully we can replace him well but might be tricky .

Probably the right time, but I really thought last summer he could go on for another 3-4 years.

Easily one of our greats and I really hope he gets a big score in the final test to go out on a high.

I was there at day 4 in Brisbane in 2010 and I'll never forget.

Have you got big enough feet to fill Cook's shoes? Smaller sizes aren't available, it seems

If he had kept ticking over for another 4 years or so, he would have beaten Tendulkar's test runs.

With T20, we will never see the like of Cookie again.

Lucky you, AH. That innings defined the 10-11 series, which is one of England's greatest sporting achievements of my lifetime (& I'm quite old).

When he started, we all associated his name with the Letter from America fellow.

    Cookie has rewritten that one.

How precisely can you calculate someone's foot size from their height?

    AC is 6'2''.

    Likely to be size 10-12.

Yep I was so lucky, I'd planned my trip to go for one day, I left Australia 24 hours later, but never expected to see something as memorable as that. Went with an old Aussie mate from school who got us the tickets (so I wasn't with the barmy army) and he fully expected to see England bowled out and an Australian victory. Think he'd left before tea with most of the locals. I've got that series on DVD along with 2005 and rewatched both recently

They’re on a continuous loop over here.

I’d venture that Cook was the toughest English cricketer since Brian Close.

I wonder if the chaotic & palpably soft regime of Bayliss/Root has had an influence on his going prematurely.

    Huge shame if so.
