Good point, it does indeed seem as if they've scaled back.

I wonder if Brexit and the subsequent reduced benefits of acquiring players who can fairly quickly obtain Spanish passports might have something to do with it.

Speaking of which, will that impact Cucho's ability to get a work permit? Be brilliant if he could link up with his Colombian mate Suarez (who he's probably never met before lol) in January

I don't think anyone really knows exactly what rules will be applied to EU footballers in the UK after Brexit. It could be a bit more difficult, it could not. Given the typical wage a footballer would be on things probably should still be fine though for most professional sides.

If the club can get him a passport and in to the country by 31st December it could remove any doubt, but the timeline could be tight.

Juergen Elitim & Filip Stuparevi* were the last two young foreign signings to join the loan treadmill as far as I can see and both joined in 2019, July and January respectively. I can't find any new purchases since then but will keep an eye on the players contracted to the club when those details are released.

I think the new loan rules limits the number of over 23's you can have away from the club at any one time. As it stands Adalberto Penaranda (if it's confirmed to be a loan), Jorge Segura and Williams Velásquez are the only over 23's out on loan at the moment. (Matheus Aias is also 23). I think Velasquez & Segura will go the same way as Aias in the winter transfer window when their loans end.

A stupid loan to Udinese which meant he had to wait longer to get his Spanish passport and didn't allow him to get settled anywhere

Sent him to Italy for a year which delayed his Spanish work permit? That’s not to say Peneranda isn’t an idiot but the random year in Italy was mindless from Pozzo given he hardly played. Our ability to find loans for players where they actually play and develop is generally dreadful.

It's definitely mixed, Suarez, Estupinan and Cucho to an extent have done well out of their loans, Lukebakio (remember him?) too, although he was mismanaged when he was actually here by the sounds of it. Penaranda and Success for various reasons haven't kicked on

That’s a fair point. He’s not helped himself either by the sound of it though and there comes a point where you need to knuckle down. Sounds like that hasn’t happened yet

Suarez and Estupian yes. I still think Cucho is a slow burner. Lukebakio was pure luck after mismanagement. Maybe Wilmot has half a season I suppose.

Yes I agree he seems to be a bit of a moron, but not sure the apportionment of blame. Player 70% Club 30% something like that.

Penaranda has had some bad luck with injuries. The club have made some dreadful loan decisions which delayed his work permit, and meant he was at clubs where he would never play. However, Penaranda has not taken any of the opportunities given to him. Cucho, Lukebakio, Pervis, Suarez all went on loan and impressed. Penaranda did the opposite.

Hopefully he grows up and gets back to it this season, but the evidence would suggest it is unlikely.

So he's not going (yet) after all?

(If the original tweets I saw were fake, they've done well with over 15,000 followers! - Apologies for getting peoples hopes up/disappointing others who want to see him stay. I go again.)

I bet he’s on a decent wage, and given our need to cut costs, I’m not shocked the club would look at him as expendable. I’m not confident he can trusted to justify his earnings, so it makes sense to get him off the books for the time being.

That said, we’ve obviously done a terrible job developing him, and while it’s clear he’s had attitude problems of his own making, the lack of direction with the random loans surely have also contributed to this situation.

A real disappointing scenario all round, because it looked like he could have been special.

I've never really paid much attention to our legion of loanees. I see the "Watford player" on their bios as a nothing more than a flag of convenience. I don't expect them to ever play for us.

It may not be a great source of players for us but is it a commercial success for the Pozzos? I don't know.

If they get young talent that is developed by another club and have their wages paid for is it a "no lose gamble"?

If the player makes it to any kind of half decent level they can sell. If they don't then bye and thanks for the memories.

I may be totally wrong but in my mind the whole loanee thing is a separate business to Watford FC for the Pozzos that might just give them the odd big pay day.

  28. With the right attitude from him and a sensible development roadmap by the club... he can still make it... but it is late in the day.

How old was Jay Demerit when he started playing pro soccer? Older than Peneranda I think.

Pearson called him very talented so its up to the club to decide if it can develop him and is it worth the time. If not... release him.

Yes but Jay gave his heart and soul into becoming a professional. Penaranda undoubtedly has talent it's the application that is missing.

I’m pretty sure he’s already a professional footballer isn’t he? Just not necessarily a very good one.

  31. My point with Jay was about 'making it'

It's not too late for AP to make it if he wakes up, resets his attitude, puts in 110% effort, and the club match that with a plan for him

I'm not sure any of that is going to happen

Is mentoring these Latin kids a useful part-time job for Gomes? It would fit well with his pastoring.
