One point from our first game. It's fast becoming a WFC tradition.

    Hello,

I'm still on holiday so the hand drawn graphs are still the only option, but I've added a little Silva smile to it this week! I always had high hopes for him but the early signs are even better; if nothing else at least I enjoy following Watford again.

I like this graph, a lot easier to follow than last years.

Although last years was very well done, I found the amount of different graphs a little confusing at times to be honest

Well - a point gained there...

    The current position is:
    • 4 points better than this time last year (5 vs 1). This is 1 better than after the last game.
    • 3 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (5 vs 2). This is the same as after the last game
    • 2 points better than the '40 point' line (5 vs 3). This is the same as after the last game

Welcome back from your hols David.

You found your spirit level I see but did you lose your ruler?
(Is there a reason the 40 point line is not straight in the second graph)?
    Cheers

Not being pedantic but shouldn't it be rule instead of ruler?

    Have I been outpedantic-ed?
But I think both can be used.

Okay... I think the forum doesn't work with my formatting from last year so please ignore all the web syntax in my message, I'll sort that out next week!

Some questions were correctly asked about my wobbly 40 point line - I forgot to explain this last week! As it is a comparable fixture graph, I thought I come up with a 40 point line that replicated our comparable fixtures. But I knew one-off fixtures aren't always representative as you one-off games off football throw up surprise. Therefore the patented "David' s 40 point" line groups teams into their positions and then works out, based on previous Watford results in the last 2 years, how many points you would expect to get from the game. The groupings are as follows:
    • Top 6 teams (excluding Watford if we happen to finish here)
    • Middle 7 teams
    • Bottom 6 teams (excluding Watford when we did finish here
It also factors in home and away results.

In the grand scheme of things all of this analysis was a bit of a waste of time, but hey I'm a geek, so please humor me!

You do great work on this thread and I really enjoy it so if you are a geek then I am too.
Couple of things though - your legend for the two previous years looks much the same though one comes out with dashes - should you change colours? Also your graph against comparable teams shows we were behind the previous year for the whole of last year - is that really true? The other graph shows us ahead and behind at times and I would have thought both would show that.

The presentation of points vs. comparable teams is dependent on the order of the fixtures, unlike points vs. number of games. You can see that there are sharp increases in the 16/17 season in the middle of the season, but they aren't sufficient to make up the poor start.

It would be interesting to make three graphs at the end of the season. All being points vs. comparable teams, but ordered by the fixture list from one of the past three seasons.

Thanks for that - stupid of me - yes it shows the order going on this season's fixtures not last year. What it does show is how few points we might have expected in the opening dozen or so fixtures this year if we performed as we did last year. Thankfully that has not happened.

I did double check the very slow start to last year's graph when I first pulled it together as it looked weird! We just happened to do really badly in all those games last year.

Sorry about the lack of update last week - my computer wasn't working and then I had a really busy week. But now I'm back free again, and things are looking rosy!

    The current position is:
    • 4 points better than this time last year (11 vs 7). This is 3 better than after the last game.
    • 7 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (11 vs 4).This is 2 better than after the last game.
    • 5 points better than the '40 point' line (11 vs 6). This is the same as after the last game.

Thanks for the update. Unless I'm reading this wrong- I thought we drew away to B'mouth in both 15/16 and 16/17. The "Comparable Fixtures" graph above appears to show we took 3 points in 15/16.
