People saying we should ask for £25m as a minimum are waaaaay off currently. He wasn’t even a regular for us last season in a poor team that was crying out for creativity. He’s a very talented young player with heaps of potential (that would likely be far better realised at Brighton) - but my unpopular bet is that he won’t get much of a look in under Ismael and Chakvetadze will be preferred. And Asprilla will be loaned out in January to some lowly La Liga side under the premise of ‘experience/game-time’.
Another one - they don't play in the same positions in Ismael's formation. Asprilla is more competing with Louza and Kayembe, or Sema and Ince.
I get your point, but there are at least 48 games in the season, surely he'll get enough gametime this season (more than last season, and more than he'd get at Brighton even if they are in Europe)
The £25m would of course be taking his potential into account. He's not a £25m player now, but has the potential to be a £50m one, and he has a few years on his contract. Hence why we shouldn't be biting at anything other than a big bid.
Yep. JP was also lightweight and very raw in his first season when he joined us at the same age as Asprilla did. It took until the previous season, his third with the club, for things to really come together for him, and for him to show his class on a consistent basis. I suspect the same would be the case for Asprilla. I reckon any bids from Brighton would be chancing their arm in the hope they can get him for fairly cheap now, with the suspicion that if they left it a couple of seasons it would be an even higher fee similar to what they paid for JP. As a separate point though, I do think he will still struggle to get many starts still this season, but that's more because he plays where we have depth, and the stage of development he's still in.
The point I was alluding to (perhaps sloppily) was that of Ismael is looking for creativity or ball carrying, he will likely turn to Chakvettadze, not Asprilla.
I imagine Brighton would send him off to Union in Belgium or another decent club where they know he’d progress.
Perhaps, and I know they're in Europe again this season, but I wonder if he'll think he'd rather be in the Championship than Belgium?
Not Quirt - The nuance is that some people (including me) are saying that we should not sell him for less than that unless we need the cash to survive - because it has to be a reasonable guess that he will become worth that inside a year or two - so why sell when there is no contract pressure and his potential is clear for all including Brighton to see. Yes his current value is closer to 10m but if we are not a willing seller now then we need to factor in some development or we might as well forget the overseas scouting
Not that I think the moves are linked, Kudus would be much more for the here and now than Asprilla, but the Kudus move has broken down apparently...
I ate a kudu steak just before watching us beat Leeds in the play-off final (on TV, I hasten to add. I don't think that they sell it in Cardiff).
Suggesting on Twitter that he wants to leave . Trouble is young heads get easily turned sadly . Particularly with new agents.
If you cannot get into a side against a League One team that we were struggling to break down and were crying out for a bit if creativity, I do not blame him for thinking this way. However it's obviously just not that game. When he has come on, even late in games last season when we were gash, he made us move up a gear. He wants to play football every week, as do all players. If he's never going to be part of VI's plans then he is no doubt thinking about his options.
I suspect the speculation is why he hasn’t been involved though .. Guess it might be brought up later - and swept under the carpet !
As he has not featured on the first two games, you would have to conclude that the proposed move is the reason. His head might not be in the right place, it may be a disciplinary matter or the club want to avoid him getting injured. It’s likely that there is a big chunk of any fee we receive going to his previous club. No real profit to be made selling him at this stage, but if he wants out, it will have a negative impact. It’s a croc of sh!t.
It would be a mistake both for him to go and for us to sell him. He’s not the finished article by a long way yet but the talent is there. He really needs to develop physically as much as anything - even for a young un he’s very skinny and lacking core strength. If it was up to me I’d be sending him off on loan for this year to Belgium or Netherlands for the season with a S&C and nutrition program in his suitcase. Come back in a year pal with 5kg of muscle packed on and let’s see where we are then.
Ismael won't have Lewis or Ince in the squad until they're physically ready so he's hardly going to have Asprilla in the squad if he's not mentally ready. Yaser is still very inexperienced, maybe he's still getting up to speed with the new system or maybe Ismael thinks he's just a bit too wasteful with the ball at times. He could have been due to come on at Stevenage for all we know but the Ngakia injury meant we had to use up a sub early on.
