Why don't you just pop away to the coast for a few days and ask her to text you when it's all over ?

I’m expected to be on call when it all kicks off, like I’m a bloody taxi driver or something

Seriously though, the prospect is daunting enough, I’m quite glad I’m not fussing over a newborn in 38degree heat.

Would love to know your secret to getting your house "lovely and cool". Have a thermometer in my bedroom where I'm working and despite doing what everyone should do, ie keeping the curtains drawn and opening the windows only at night and early morning, it's currently 31 C in here. Even relative to 39 that's not lovely and cool! Mind you, when it remains well above 20 at night that doesn't help. Perhaps I ought to change my curtains and get double glazed windows?

Seems a bit unreasonable - bet she decides to have it at a ridiculous time like the middle of the night or during rush hour.

16 downstairs, about 18 first floor, hotter on second floor.
I suspect structure of house means heat is rising away from downstairs
Before it got really hot at night made sure to religiously open all windows at night to get all the cold in. Since its got very hot strictly keeping all doors and windows shut with heavy curtains throughout day light hours will only open again when it cools to under 20 at night.
also switched off combi boiler. I can cope with a 20 degree shower at the moment no point further heating the house.

I find it silly when I look out the window and see so many people with windows fully open in the day and closed at night, literally heating your house and then keeping the heat in at night

28.6 in my dining room, taking every precaution to stop the heat getting in. Still working in just my boxers though and hoping I don't get a work video call !

When my ex wife called tell me to come home (20 mins away) as she was ready to have our first child, I had to tell her that there was a bomb scare at Reading station and I couldn't get to my car.... plus the whole of central Reading had been brought to a standstill so no chance of getting a taxi...so "good luck" . Not a fun conversation to take part in.....

I'm not sure why my room should get so hot as it's north-facing and though it overlooks my street it's a quiet one. Couldn't you have your camera switched off?

21 degrees and cloud cover in the Midlands of Ireland. All the panic is over here. Just the dread of returning to normal "summer" weather from tomorrow.

Didn't think much of it yesterday, but just popped out to get something from the car and it reminded me of the Vin Diesel film Pitch Black.

Could do with some here. The lawns at Meister Manor are like walking on rice crispies, since the moat has dried up.

Curtains and windows closed all over, extractor fans on in kitchen and bathroom, 26c inside, still bloody warm but so much better than the feels like 39c outside. Going to be around 9pm when I can open all the windows again, only 5 1/2 hours left!!!

You realise the extractor fans will be removing air at 26c and sucking in air at 39c to replace it?

Rather worrying that the national media seem hell-bent on superimposing Johnson's one-piece training bra with thong onto maps of GB to presumably symbolise above average heat or what that idiot would claim as a Brexit dividend for us. How delightful.

    40 degrees is nasty.

We get that high near me sometimes (happened about a month ago), but everywhere over here has air conditioning so it's much easier to handle. I just go to work in our frigid datacentre when I need to cool off.

I'm really worried about my dad though, because like most houses in the UK his doesn't have AC. Going to see if I can arrange a window mount unit for him.

We bought one recently that’s about two feet tall and on wheels, with a hose that you dangle through the window. About £200 I think. Absolutely fantastic, perfect for keeping a bedroom or lounge cool. I can just about lug it up the stairs at bedtime so I’m guessing it might not be ideal for your dad unless you get a couple for different room.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. He's not up to lugging one around, they're far too heavy.

This is the one we bought, bit more expensive than I remember but it’s been an absolutely cracking buy. Easy to use, remote control etc.
