Had to sleep on the sofa last night, upstairs gets hot so I obviously need the windows open but that means one of my dogs barks at the slightest noise/car driving past etc. so it’s a double whammy

I'm having to febreeze my aircast boot every day, not pleasant. At least the washing dries in a couple of hours.

I was luckily fine last night. My better half is on late shifts, so I'm in the back room which has a bit more cover from the sun. I just put a fan on about 30-40 minutes before I went to bed to cool the room down and it was alright.

Got 33c in the shade in Albir today. 29c when I went to bed last night, aircon is a must. I swear I was even sweating while taking a shower earlier.

In this extremely hot weather remember it's 'opposite time':

    1. During the day curtains shut (to minimise the sun's heating effect on the indoors).
    2. During the day windows shut (to minimise the amount of warm air coming into your cooler house).
    3. At night windows and curtains open to allow the warmer air indoors to escape to the cooler night.

A fan of course doesn't itself cool the temperature, it just increases "wind chill" when you feel it on your skin so makes you feel cooler. The minute its off, you will feel just as hot, or even hotter based on the sudden change. The key is to close curtains on sunny windows all day and then open all bedroom window as the sun goes down. The air temp outside at about 4-5pm might be even warmer than indoors but at 10pm outside is cooler and you want as much of that cooler air into the house before going to sleep.

If you can sleep with bedoom curtains open then great but obviously daylight may wake you up early. I always have a pee at night so leave curtains open and then close when I have my midnight pee :).

With humidity accounted for, felt like 47 degrees here yesterday. My air conditioning was struggling to keep up.

I have a street lamp slap bang outside my window, so sleeping with the blinds open is extremely difficult. Saves on the electric light bill though, it’s that bright.

I got aircon installed in my bedroom a week ago. It cost just over a grand, but knowing how much better I work when I have had a decent night sleep (I am a very light sleeper) and the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves, it is definitely worth it to me.

Would be nice to get a bit of rain for the garden and for the temperatures to come down a bit. When do the school holidays start?

"Ivinghoe"....and I'm only about 10 metres below the height of IB and though we were still using our ski passes 2 weeks ago, the snow has since gone. The Champneys Glacier is also retreating fast.

Forecast for Watford. Note the current prediction for next Monday and Tuesday both 38 C. I have never known a forecast like that for the UK. Some places are forecasting higher, London for 39 C, which is above the UK record.

We’re going to bake. Don’t make plans. Avoid transport. Emigrate.

40 degrees is absolutely insane. Have frequently had to work in temperatures in the very high 30s in Europe in the summer and it's staggeringly hot to the point where functioning becomes difficult if you have to be out in it for longer than a few minutes at a time.

Hope your car radiator is highly efficient and your air con works !!!
I was going to pop into the office on Tuesday but will now stay home sipping ice cold beers and water.

When I was a naive youngster I booked a holiday to Dubai in July because it was cheap. That got well above 40 a few times(I distinctly remember the thermometer by the place you got your towels saying 46 one day) you couldn’t walk for more than a minute outside without being a sweaty mess and having to dive inside somewhere with air con, the sand on the beach was absolutely lethal to the soles of your feet and the sea wasn’t the least bit refreshing as it was so warm. Sitting by the pool required getting into it approximately every 5 minutes.

Often had to work in the desert. Max was 54c and you do feel like you are starting to die.

Key is to keep a bottle of water on you at all times as you lose fluid rapidly at 40C+. If you've got delivery drivers or workmen around, keep a few refrigerated bottles of water handy to offer them.

40 degrees in Beaconsfield. Really hope the power doesn't go, as I want to gloat to anyone who will listen about the excellent timing of my aircon installation.

I go there a couple of times a year for work and learnt the hard way when to go and when not to go. My first time was in June and I stood at some lights waiting to cross a road and I could feel myself burning on the spot - it was about 46 that day. I now avoid it between April and October as a rule of thumb. Us Brits aren't made for that kind of weather...

Better to avoid it full stop I would suggest. No idea why people would choose to go there, for holidays at least.
