Variable speed limits on the M25

I think what I'm saying is pretty damn obvious.

Cause of accident and cause of death are NOT the same thing. You are conflating the two.

If I make a mistake and hit someone because I wasn't looking, the fault for the accident is mine. If I hit them at 20mph, they'll probably live. If I am traveling 70mph, they will probably die. This isn't rocket science and I'm utterly dumbfounded that some people are struggling to make the link. At no point have I said, nor have I attempted to say, that speed CAUSES most accidents. Increased speed causes accidents to be WORSE. The overall cause of an accident might because I'm not paying attention, but the speed I am driving at is always a factor.

If I hit someone while driving at 70mph due to the fact I'm not paying attention, the cause of the accident is me not paying attention but the reason someone died instead of being merely hurt is that I was driving at 70mph. If I had been driving at 10mph they would have been bruised instead. Speed is always relevant as a result as a compounding factor.

I think the only thing that's apparent is that your reading comprehension is downright diabolical.

    I agree with this.

As I have send all along, speed is a multiplier of the accident, but the accident is not necessarily caused by speed.

Nice to see the wonderful Police in Berkshire out at 7.30 am this morning with their mobile speed traps out to catch the unsuspecting motorist on the one day they can get to work without the usual jams. Yes I passed more than one.

Merry Christmas you to you too you ****s.

Since Christmas I've had two near misses on the motorway. Yesterday another driver thought it normal to pull straight over the white lines that specifically prevent you crossing them and into my lane where the M40 joins the M25. Luckily the person to my right also saw it happen as despite fighting the urge the natural reaction is to move away from the other car, so I moved slightly right and into space. It was bl**dy close, (you don't need to mention speed, it would be too easy on this thread).

Can anyone recommend a good in car camera as I really would like to record these lunatics?

Got a feeling I was flashed on the M25 last night. Matrix was saying 50 (no idea why, traffic was free flowing). Not far ahead of me the camera flashed someone then as I went through it flashed. I checked my speed and I was doing 55 so bloody harsh if it was me. It then flashed someone else again straight away. I checked my mirror a couple of times after and it didn't go off again. It had a mental 10 seconds it seems. Fingers crossed I didn't set it off...

Thats actually a bloody nasty junction. First time I used it I got caught out. something weird with he merging if you're in heavy traffic you don't necessarily see the lines

Did it flash twice when you drove past?

A40 into London. They've put up average speed cameras to be arseholes.

Not sure if anyone has been caught out?

As you will nearly always stop at the lights before the flyover and there aren't any cameras after you are already on it, there's only a small stretch where you actually need to keep your speed.

Yup. There were other cars passing through as well. It just felt like it was for me! Heard nothing as yet but I guess it takes a while to come through.

The government have said that all active cameras will be yellow, I thought it had to be done sooner but this report says by October https://www.gov.uk/government/news/end-of-the-road-for-grey-speed-cameras

For what it's worth, since my speeding points I got last January I've been very good, definitely a case of once bitten twice shy. Also the new car I got in May has a limiter function so when in a variable zone I set it to that speed and then I know I won't go accidentally over the limit particularly in average speed limit sections.

That only applies to cameras on motorways and major A roads controlled by Highways England. A tiny proportion. And the motorway ones are often mounted behind gantries so could be flashing neon pink for all colour matters.

A saw something else that suggested that the gantry cameras will also have to be made more visible.

Watch out for the new style camera's on the M25 between M4-M40.

Like the ones further round between Potters Bar and Enfield

The speed limits are automatic. They come on when the sensors detect slow moving traffic and change to stop you from running into the back of it at 70. So as not to have a limit that goes straight from 70 to 40 (say), they start far enough away to reduce in steps; 60,50 then 40. The problem is that if the obstruction clears, you may well see all the limits, but not the reason for them. We have had a 'smart' system on the M42 for ten years or so and I have driven on a virtually empty road with limits set all the way down for no apparent reason.

There should be a National Speed Limit sign (Circle with a diagonal bar) on the gantry at the end of the limit. If not, and you pass a couple with no limit showing, you can safely assume that the restriction has ended. The white NSP sign can be hard to see in bright sunshine.

Yup and the system is proven to work .... the moaners would soon shut up if traffic management was turned off, they'd be getting home just in time to set off for work again.

I know it's not the M25, but that stretch of the M1 from Snorbens towards Scummerland with the four lanes is always really frightening: three cars all side by side on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd overtaking lanes "zooming" along at 62 mph...hanging's too good for them. Also, going the other way and getting off the M1 onto the A414 is always "exciting".

Last night about 11pm I joined the M25 at the A3 and went clockwise around towards J18. Well before the M3 the gantry signs flashed up 50 with another sign saying "congestion". Knowing about the wonderful new cameras I slowed to 50 as everyone else went flying past. The next gantry was set to 40 so I duly slowed to 40. When you're doing 40 and people are going past at 70mph+ it's not the safest situation IMO.

The next gantry was back to the national speed limit again. No congestion whatsoever to be seen. I wonder how many driving bans are in the post this week?

Not all gantries have cameras, the section I use most is between 21A and 22. Eachway there are only one set of cameras and they are on the gantry just before the main line railway bridge.

I've noticed that it seems to be a south-eastern thing where a lot of drivers go significantly faster than the variable limit; pretty much everywhere else drivers tend to follow the instructions.

Apart from traffic nothing more irritating to see variable speed limits in place when you can see the road is clear for miles ahead

I don't know where all the smart cameras are now, (the ones to the left of the gantries).

That's a bit chicken and egg though. The traffic management scientist types would tell you the road ahead if clear for miles because they're put in place that limit. It's supposed to all be to do with managing traffic flow.

Possibly not so many otherwise people would have changed their behaviour more. I've been mindful of this recently but somewhat dozily failed to slow at one recently and just went with the general traffic flow. Must have been doing 65 past a '50'. Cursed myself, but that was many weeks ago and nothing in the post.
