This is the point I was trying to make, the assumption regarding any points he ‘won’ us is that we would be fielding 10 players if he wasn’t there. That if we had deployed £5m on a different striker, they would’ve just stood still in the centre circle like a traffic cone the entire time they would’ve been in the pitch.

He was absolute gash in the Norwich game and luckily shanked one into the side netting from 6 yards. ******* Kamara could have finished that one and he's hopeless.

Davis is supposedly a 15mil striker and does pretty much stand like a traffic cone most the time he's on the pitch.

I quite enjoyed it thank you but suspect it will be insufficient for an afternoon on court.

I may need reinforcements before my risotto post 8.30pm tonight.

To that end I have packed some pantone. May take some dates too.

    It's all go here!

The fee wasnt his fault but a bottom of the champo league one level team is more his level. I dont blame him for coming here, more money, maybe a cut of the transfer fee, a chance he could have made it to the Prem etc but I really hope we dont see signings like this anymore now Manga seems to be in control of transfers amongst other things. I would dearly love a statement from the club saying they dont deal with Bayat anymore.

Disgraceful transfer, for the benefit of certain individuals rather than the club. We could've spent £5m on an up and coming EFL talent but the ******s in change of the club sorted their mate out instead. Still, at least Mogi can take another cut from any loan deal.

Bayo is, of course, blameless. It's not his fault he's not very good and seems a nice enough chap, plus why should he turn down a nice long term contract?

It hasn’t worked out obviously and he’s a poor player, and the wrong profile of striker, but the transfer fee we paid for him did represent a reasonable transfer fee given his value at the time. There was other interest at the time from other clubs at the price. All this “oh but he was sold just before for less than half the price” crap is just that. There was a pre-agreed option prior to an enhancement of his transfer value by the best run of form of his career.

Is that what Everton are offering them for Becao?

The Kamara money was basically the fee Spurs paid for Udogie, so reckoned it was just to prevent moving the funds outside of the UK and losing out on the currency exchanges.

Obviously we needed the money to keep us running too.

Were other clubs genuinely interested in him at the price? That’s certainly not what I’ve been told. The transfer stinks as much as everyone thinks it does.

I’ve heard from someone that Kompany liked him and Burnley were interested.

The transfer stinks because of Bayat’s involvement. We haven’t profiled what we needed and then gone down the list of targets. But the price, in context and without hindsight, isn’t unreasonable. Look at what other similarly aged players who scored similar amounts of goals last season in similar level divisions went for, eg Cuypers, Vanzeir (about to join NY Red Bulls I believe), Nicholson (who Bayo replaced).

Absolutely disagree. Any due diligence or basic scouting should have shown his limitations and made £5m laughable, irrespective of 11 goals in a backwater league. Added to the fact this was the vast bulk of our summer so you would have thought they would give it some thought first.

No, this was an outrageously poor transfer which helped benefit both Bayat brothers simultaneously. Any attempt to paint it as a market value bad luck event is complete nonsense in my view. It was clear we overpaid from day 1 to many fans.

  25. LeedsOrn

    LeedsOrn Reservist

The argument that most fans made at the time is that the £5m is greater than price paid by Charleroi in exercising their option. Which is a nonsense because he’d gone on a hot run of form since then appreciating his value.

I think basic scouting would have shown that he did not have the skillset/all round game we would need from our striker, and could only play in a two. Obviously we did not do that because for some reason the club wanted to work with Bayat again. I’ve made that clear. But to a club playing to Bayo’s strengths £5m was a reasonable fee to pay given his output last season.

    Oh have a day off.

If you genuinely think the fee was anything like justifiable or close to his true worth then I'm afraid you literally need sectioning. He's absolutely tragic.

  27. LeedsOrn

I think that’s unwarranted and unacceptable for the forum and I have reported your post. You’re welcome to disagree and I recognise most do and I’ve gone against the grain here. But that is unacceptable rhetoric. I’d expect better, even from you.

  28. Jumbolina

I don’t think most fans said that at all as it makes no sense. That was the poster LaClusiak (?) or whatever he is called and he’s still doing it now.

Nonetheless, disagree he was worth £5m, even with his purple patch. It especially makes no sense for a club with our small budget (at the time) that can’t take a punt like that.

The transfer and the fee were not done with any regard to what our playing squad needed or (in my view) with our best interest in mind. And that is why the entire episode is disgraceful.

Oh grow a pair. It was clearly tongue in cheek.

  30. LeedsOrn

I agree with almost all of what you say. But the main argument about his fee as I recall it (and not going to get into it and pull posts) from a lot of people “was oh look how dodgy it is we’ve paid 2.5 times what Charleroi just did.” And that is not a sound argument. But I recognise that there were others such as yourself for whom that was not part of the argument.

I do think that if you look at the Statsbomb profile of Bayo and other stats from his season last year that there were comparable players who moved for comparable prices. But regardless, he was bought here seemingly solely because of his connection with Bayat and that unacceptable.
Known throughout Hertfordshire for your wit no doubt. I’m not offended but think that what makes this a (sometimes) pleasant environment is having posters who can disagree and discuss in a pleasant manner and as hominem attacks such as yours do not belong here.

Maybe I’m misremembering but I doagree that line of argument makes no sense and don’t remember many using it. Might be wrong.

I imagine Bayo goals per minute for us is probably still decent with us, but if you scouted him surely you’d laugh at the notion of paying £5m. As always with our owners it’s either incompetence or other goals.

Well, you clearly are offended, based on your "I've reported you!" and "there's no place for such heinous attacks!", over the top nonsense. It was a tongue in cheek comment that you've responded to in the most Karen-esque, "everything offends me and has to be taken seriously", 2023 way possible.

Quick, I made an ever so slightly risqué joke, report/cancel me!

His skillset is definitely limited but his goal record has always been very good. Across his career he's played 6603 league minutes and scored 41 goals - a goal every 161 mins he's played. A player with that goal record over that period of time must have something about them - even if their technique and all round play isn't amazing, it could mean his positioning and nose for a goal is above that of other strikers.

Bayo got 11 goals and 2 assists in 1200 mins last season (92 mins per goal involvement), there's been plenty of strikers move from Belgium to England for much more than his fee who had a worse return.

Villa spent €10.5m on Samatta after he scored 7 goals, 0 assists in 1569 mins (224 mins per goal involvement). They also spent €25m on Wesley after he scored 10 goals and 9 assists in 2254 mins (118 mins per goal involvement).
Burnley just spent €11m on Lyle Foster who has 8 goals and 4 assists in 1547 mins (128 mins per goal involvement) this season

Goals are the most valuable thing in football, if you can reliably put the ball in the back of the net (despite being ***** in every other aspect of his game) then that's worth money. I think we overpaid slightly (by a mil or so) but compared to his output in Belgium and the cost I don't think it was as big of a travesty as most are making out.

Over two thirds of his career league goals have come in the Slovakian League, The French second division and the SPL. It's like saying someone in the National League must have something about them (in terms of being a logical signing for a club at a much higher level) because they've got a half decent goals to minutes record down there.

The fact he had a decent half a season in the Belgian league doesn't even come close to justifying £5m.
