The writing was on the wall when he couldn’t have ‘triggering Watford fans daily’ as his specialised subject.
A proper club legend. Wish him well but can't help feeling that he would be more suited to a coaching role as opposed to managing.
I agree however, seems like F.G.R. felt they needed a change with Dave Horseman not getting the results, probably didn't want to terminate Deeney's contract (as he was player/coach) so have gone for broke and appointed him Manager!
Always a difficult one, he was a coach there and I think he definitely would’ve been far better off sticking with that and learning the ropes longer term, but he was offered the manager role, and 99% of people in his situation would take it. The harsh reality is he’ll probably bomb, get sacked and be in a far worse position than if he just stuck with his coaching role there.
Yes though I struggle to imagine Troy taking instructions from anyone, and I doubt any new manager would have relished having him as a back-stabbing coach.
The owner seems to like a name too hence appointing Duncan Ferguson . Or maybe just a tough looking man.?!
Yes agreed, I only say that as he seemed like more a Dale Vince appointment, rather than the outgoing manager having said “let’s get Troy Deeney in as coach” so there was maybe a chance he could’ve just stayed on in his current role under a new manager, which ultimately would’ve more than likely been a better option for him longer term. But as you say, no guarantees a new manager would’ve wanted him on the coaching staff, although that could have course been a requirement for any new hire to accept, if indeed Vince wanted Deeney to stay there as a high profile name.
Did anyone hear Troy on 5Live yesterday? Might have been a repeat, he was doing an interview/chat with another former player, I think it was Jermaine Defoe. They talked about their careers and stuff. All very pally, just seemed to chat about whatever they felt like with no obvious structure. I only listened for 10 mins or so whilst driving, in that time Troy referred to the time he threatened to injure players unless he got a move to Leicester. He implied this was only ever a joke, at least I think he did. Other than that the only specific Watford references I can recall were some joking about how unfit he always was after every summer break, the contrast of that with the professionalism of Etienne Capoue, and that we were a much more professional set up than Walsall, probably not a massive surprise.
They have a podcast together, bizarrely Troy who had the less successful career does most of the talking, while Defoe sits there acting like a star struck child humouring all his tall tales.
Troy certainly letting his players know how he feels ! https://www.newschainonline.com/spo...-players-babies-after-harrogate-defeat-379794
“If I was able to tell you the amount of nonsense you have to deal with at this place from the players, it is embarrassing,” said Deeney. Like asking senior management to rip out speed bumps, stuff like that Troy?
Calling your players out in public before you've enforced rules is managerial suicide. Just bonkers coming out with that. Just call them in for Sunday training, read them the riot act, introduce massive fines, move on.
"You lot are far too good to be in this position, the previous incumbents have let you down , one or two additions will see your quality climb the league" Or " you lot are ****"
Like the Conte rant at Spurs the other year and look how long a top class experienced manager lasted! Odd really as Deeney was a player himself a few weeks ago.
Yes, he’s not going to last long and he knows it. Troy will always call it how he sees it. No wins in 7. Will probably be gone by game 10. Every week he’s throwing players under the bus. No one will respond to that. Surprised he’s not taken anything on board on how to deal with players with the press. It’s all about how crap his players are, not himself. Well he does pick those players in the first place and it’s League Two. Of course the players are going to be crap. You’ve got to get them responding to you, just as VI has done with us. We have a crap squad but he’s got them playing for him.
TBF he was very unlucky in first few games when he had them playing well and they deserved to win but didn’t. Has lost it now though …
Sort of feel it was an impossible task, FGR have been in freefall ever since we took Edwards off them. Crap all of last season and again this year. Also don't understand why he stopped playing once he took up the management job, he wasn't great for them but you'd have thought if he's going to complain about the players then he should at least show them how it's done. Although he does then only have himself to blame if it goes downhill with him up top so I can see both sides. Didn't have him down as a manager really so not a surprise for me he's not doing great, but if he somehow does manage to build up a bit of a reputation I will not be surprised to see him end up here
I'm not that knowledgeable about how lower league teams operate, I'm interested in many of their results and their ups and downs in the league/non-league but that's as far as it goes in most cases, but what I have noticed is that a lot of clubs (especially the smaller ones, noticeably those that have recently been promoted from the Conference/National League) go into freefall after getting promoted to League 1 and spending a short stint there, and end up fighting another relegation. As we know Forest Green won automatic promotion from League 2 only two seasons ago (that's why Watford were interested in their manager) but they went straight back down after an atrocious season during which they hardly won any games. Did they just massively overachieve under Edwards, or have they had a big firesale of players for whatever reason? I thought FGR had one of the bigger budgets in League 2, but that can change, especially if they get over-ambitious beyond their means and/or backers lose interest (we've seen this before with these clubs with traditionally tiny fanbases which become basically a rich man's plaything).
They'd reached the play-offs the season before they went up and were probably in and around the favourites to go up that season so it wasn't a huge surprise they did and they'd been preparing for promotion. The biggest issue they had last season was losing a fair few of the key players who'd got them promoted plus of course Edwards, as well as their top scorer the previous year having a long term injury which kept him out for the first half of the season. On the pitch it was basically not good enough players, mixed with being bottom of the league for so long that most of the players had given up resulting in them only winning once from January till season end. The ownership is also part of the reason why I'd imagine, didn't invest enough once they'd got up. Always been quite a bit vanity project for Dale Vince first and foremost, with the football second, and I think relegation killed a lot of the reputation they'd gotten for smart investment and actually managing promotion when the likes of Salford had failed. Again this season they haven't really made smart moves on the pitch and have used Deeney and appointing Hannah Dingley for 2 weeks to try to hide this. They'll have to sort themselves out soon if they want to stay in the EFL as relegation from League 2 basically ends any hope they have of climbing the pyramid again.
I remember how he used to berate teammates on the pitch instead of encouraging them, particularly the younger ones. Some players responded to that, but others just went into their shell and in my opinion contributed to our slide. Absolutely no surprise he's as hotheaded and foolish as a manager. He won't have a long career. Sent from my Pixel 6 using Tapatalk
Oh dear Troy. This is precisely the sort of thing I was concerned might happen. A lack of maturity and terrible man management. What does he think that player's reaction will be? How will he repay him? You reap what you sow.
?? Nope. I’m not interested in the prem other than the scores and stats for teams near the bottom ! I looked at the stats and bbc reports for Troy’s first games as I was interested to see what impact he had. Looked like they were having more goal attempts than opponents but still losing. I watch the reports and stats for a few lower league clubs, some I want to do well (like Lincoln due to GT, snorbens, Hemel) and some I want to struggle like Stockport and Salford.
I do wonder if this an insight into the leadership impact he had at Watford towards the end. I think he had a positive influence when we were doing well but not when things started to go wrong. He just seems to blames others and take no personal accountability. In our first pozzo relegation his body language on the pitch was all wrong, he would outwardly display frustration with team mates and I saw very little in the way of him supporting or encouraging less experienced team mates. It's a shame.
It's old school management that won't work these days unless you can replace all the players which he cannot do so is now stuck with a squad who probably don't trust him or feel under valued.
