I had those once quite recently, certainly stronger than normal salt & vinegar crisps, make sure you have plenty of water handy!

Any Kettle chips are good, I like Pret's vegetable crisps a lot, although I've had them and other versions too many times for them to be my favourite - they're pretty ubiquitous.

Walkers crisps have improved a lot now they no longer put MSG in them and actually include natural flavours (not in all of them though) - chilli sensations are easily my favourite Walkers crisps.

I know your forum opinions are usually very iffy :), but these do sound good to the extent that I've googled the nearest Co-op in Tring and plan to make a special trip to verify/ridicule.

I had cockroaches once in a flat in Archway. Made my skin crawl.

My landlord was a **** though.

Tbh never seen one in the UK before.
Since they've been in and fumigated I've not seen one. I've only just realised that some of the ****ers fly.

Paprika crisps are the best out of all crisp varieties. The ones you can find in Europe though.

Sitting on a Mediterranean balcony somewhere as the sun sets with a packet of paprika lays and a cold beer is one of life’s pleasures.

My dad used to live over the road from the guitarist Trevor Oakes. His two lads played for us in the 90’s and all.

The current roll out of modern technology, I think a lot of it it 20 to 25 years too early.

Many of us oldies are being left behind by it all as we were not brought up with computers etc. the nearest I got to a computer during my school days was a basic calculator! Hence all this modern tech does not come naturally to many of us, and all the current self service this and that online etc. goes over many of our heads.

I think banks and other organisations have gone with Apps etc. 20 to 25 years too early, they should have waited for us oldies to pass on before introducing all this modern tech on such a wide scale IMO.

It’s not that they are rolling them out too early, it’s that they are failing the equality duty to offer reasonable adjustments in the way of support to people who genuinely cannot use them.

There are lots of benefits of apps and online payments, including for older people. No need for them to collect sack loads of cash from their pension and then have it stolen etc.

To be frank, you’ve been posting on football forums for about 25 years now, since the Teamtalk days, so you are an early adopter. And you went to school, I’ll guess, 45 years ago. There’s no reason why you couldn’t get a bit of learning in your noggin since then.

I never said it was. It’s a protected characteristic though and many will have disabilities. So when public bodies and companies make changes they need to assess the impact.

My mum is in her mid seventies, she was a nurse in care home looking after dementia patients and it eventually got too much for her, she’d never touched a computer in her life but went on a course, retrained and learnt word, excel etc and got a job as an admin assistant for a mortgage advisor from which she’s only just retired from. She’s got an iPad and a laptop and is perfectly adept on them.

I think in the vast majority of cases it’s won’t learn rather than can’t learn. Her mum, my nan was totally resistant to any new technology that came out since my grandad died in the eighties, she simply wouldn’t entertain anything new.

There’s very much a case of fear of the unknown in many elderly allied with a sense of “I’ve got this far without needing to use email or a computer so I’ve shown I can do without them” ignoring the changing world. Texts seem to be the first concession. Then a tablet. My mother in her mid 80s and severely disabled now uses both to the extent she physically can, but sit her in front of a laptop or pc and she wouldn’t know how to turn it on let alone use it.

You pretty much implied it with your reference to reasonable adjustments, though I figured that probably wasn’t your intent. Hence the passive aggressive smiley.

Anyway, I agree with the rest of your two responses. If there’s a real disadvantage to someone companies should address it and offer support, though I suspect what a lot of the bad faith actors / customers really want is things to just revert to how they always were. That’s not right either.

I worked in a supermarket as a teenager before self service was a thing and a lot of the oldies liked a chat, some of them came in every day when they obviously didn’t need to, so I think a lot of the self service aspect is probably more to do with loneliness and the loss of the social aspect of talking to the shop assistant, which I think is understandable. I know self service tills are a bit of a running joke, but in reality they’re incredibly easy to use and I much prefer to use them. I don’t think not understanding technology is a genuine excuse for not wanting to use them.

I think it depends on the shop, in my local co-op there are four of them which are always empty, then one person serving who always has a queue of about 3/4 people waiting. They don’t have the sensor things that think you haven’t put something in your bag so not a lot to go wrong.

Remember, we live we live in a country where the withdrawal of a system of measurement that hasn't been actually taught in the nation's education system for over half a century is an emotive political issue.

Computers and similar tech have been part of everyday life for 30 years. If you chose to ignore it, that's on you.

This hasn't been sneaking up on anyone.

Yes it’s fear of the unknown and the fact they can still get by with the methods they have used for life to date, ie queuing, phoning to book a table rather than using an app, writing cheques, ignoring on line banking, phoning/letters instead of email etc. but it gets more and more difficult.

I think this is too simplistic. I think the fear isn’t just of the unknown but also concern that some of the newer mechanisms are not secure, fuelled by media stories to that effect.

It’s quite wrong to try to prevent new technology. Most of us should understand by now we have been resistant to things we then found we benefited from.

Change shouldn’t be allowed to disadvantage people either and yes, that’s always going to be a judgement call.

I like them. When you just want a few bits they're a godsend. It's when the system goes wrong there's issues.
Have a bag, place it on the scales, just need to wait for a member if staff to validate it.
Buying booze, again wait, health care, again. Bizarrely zero alcohol beer or tonic and I've had to be validated.
Self scan? Random check have to pull everything out of the basket and go through it. Supermarkets are cutting corners making you do the work so should relax the rules a little a take the hit if a few take the pee.

Then you get the experience I had last weekend.
Rather rude chap with two horrible brats in tow. Trying to buy a couple of cartons of juice. Scans one, holds on to it, trys to scan the other, without putting the first on the scale. Kicks off because "it's not working, it never works". Starts effing and jeffing infront of his kids because he isn't getting the immediate attention he is demanding. The poor assistant was halfway through helping a confused old lady and I was patiently waiting for my tonic to be validated so he was 3rd in the help queue. The confrontation ended in a few eff offs between them before he stormed out with the juice and likely without paying. The assistant will probably get the boot because of it. Part of me felt like sorting the bloke out and explaining how to use the checkout so he didn't get issues, but I realised he's the sort of bloke that would likely not take too kindly to it. No doubt his kids will have learned from the example he set and treat people similarly.

What’s the point of a self service checkout if a significant number of bakery and fresh products can’t be found on the ‘search for non barcoded’ button, requiring you to wait at times a few minutes for ‘assistance’ to arrive. And as for having to also wait for an assistant to come and verify that a 6ft tall bearded bald bloke who is obviously over 60 is ‘old enough’ to buy a bottle of wine…! Part of the problem is that certain ‘tech improvements’ are not any such thing; they are often poorly constituted and badly implemented efforts to cut costs no matter any negative impact on customer experience.
