No chance, they write of a lot of money from self service tills. More than you might think.

More the "eff you" at the customer after being pushed over the edge. The customer was effing first. The whole store heard it.

The implementation is key. We now have the mad situation where seemingly every car park requires a different app. Get there without a dozen parking apps on your phone, all holding your card details and you may spend the next ten minutes downloading, which in rural areas can be tricky.

I’m on holiday in a country without any self service checkouts, and my god it’s so slow. I miss them a lot.

Although I take your point that there should be a better way of verifying ID.

Middle lane drivers. Yes I know it's been mentioned before.

I drove back from Cornwall today and the problem is much worse than pre covid. Driving at a fuel conscious 65-ish most of the way I'd see them coming from a mile back. Eventually boredom got the better of me and I'd pull into the middle lane before they reached me and it seemed to confuse them. They won't overtake or go back into the inside lane, just sit behind me. As soon as I pulled back in they sped up to 70 and off they went, never deviating lane. Almost every time.

    Utterly bizarre.

I know you were making a point, but if they were going faster than you why not just let them go on their merry way? It’s much worse when it’s you doing 70 and they are in the middle lane at 65. Do you go out two lanes to go past them or cruise past in the empty inside lane? Neither tactic seems to get the message across.

Absolutely. Why is it a problem if the car in the middle is doing 70 when the car in the left is doing 65?

This is a pet peeve* of mine and the bit of motorway I frequently drive (M1 between J7 & J10) is very bad for this (only northbound oddly enough) - especially when it expands to 4 lanes when you have these clowns in cruising along in at 62 MPH in the first and second overtaking lanes. The funny thing is, it's a thing that really sticks in my mind as I remember my Dad getting 'pulled' for doing the same as a kid and the cops giving him a long lecture in the car-park of a service station on the M3. ISTR it's illegal - I know it's bloody dangerous?

*Although the southbound A1 after South Mimms is another hot-spot for this and I won't mention the lane discipline south-bound A1 at Apex corner...

What you seem to be saying is that they are about to pass you at 70 mph, the National Speed Limit.

It seems odd to object and you are presenting them with the choice of either slowing down behind you or taking the third lane, which they can do at 70, but that’s often not fast enough to get out onto that lane.

Middle lane drivers are annoying, but when they are at 65 or below or when there is nothing in the inside lane. Then they should be shot, I think we can all agree on that.

I get what you’re saying in principle - getting stuck behind a middle lane hogger who’s doing 50mph with an empty inside lane beside them when the outside lane is busy so you can’t overtake is maddening - but I’m not sure the case you outline above is that. If I’ve moved into the middle lane on a busy road and can see there’s traffic ahead in the inside lane going slower than I am, chances are I’ll just stay in the middle lane for a while rather than keep moving in and out.

Well yes, that’s what you are supposed to do, isn’t it? It would be dangerous to do anything else.

The original post seems to be suggesting that the middle lane should hardly ever be used at all.

Blimey that got a bit of a reaction. Let me add some details to try to show I'm not a complete ar5e, (well no more than normal).
There are no quiet stretches on the M5 and M4 towards London on a normal weekday, so you're always moving in and out of lane 2 to overtake lorries and caravans. Several times I got stuck not being able to overtake as the middle laners wouldn't let me out, (my mistake for not moving out earlier, but Radio 2 was very good yesterday).
So a few times when I spotted someone staying in the middle lane for a few miles creeping up slowly and not using lane 1 I just overtook the next truck as normal but didn't pull back in. That's all. I didn't sit there at 65 but closer to 70, they could easily have overtaken or used lane 1, but this doesn't compute with them.

It's dangerous, it causes congestion and it's plain dumb, so a couple of minutes of their own medicine on a not too busy motorway may even make them see sense, (LOL).

I don’t see why you wouldn’t move in and out? Obviously I don’t mean constantly squeezing into gaps between lorries or whatever, some common sense applies, but you should always be looking for the next opportunity to re-enter the near side lane. Constant middle lane drivers, even if they’re doing 70mph, are a menace because they block the natural rhythm of the motorway and cause congestion. Often while chugging along on their merry way completely oblivious to the effect their lazy driving is having on others.

From what I can remember from driving theory test it's a first overtaking lane and a second overtaking lane for the cruise lane. @UEA_Hornet did you do any time in 'Traffic'?

Why is going consistently at the speed limit 'blocking the natural rhythm of the motorway'? Presumably you are saying that no one observes the limit in practice. In which case, why have it?

I agree that there should be moving in and out but read HH's post as a situation where this wasn't immediately feasible.

Sorry, I should be clear the ‘you’ at the start of my post wasn’t aimed at HH24 specifically, it was a reference to any driver.

It’s tricky to explain easily on here but in essence the whole thing breaks down if some drivers aren’t prepared to drop below 70mph at times and/or move back to the inside for a spell to allow others to progress. I came across a few middle lane hogs on the drive down to Wales for our holiday yesterday and frankly almost all of the issues come from their lack of awareness rather than their speed (though some cause chaos by sitting the middle and also going substantially slower than the lanes either side of them).

Nope. The general rule though is to stay left:
    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/motorways-253-to-273

Some drivers seem to take the existence of a slightly slower vehicle in lane 1 to be licence to remain in the middle permanently, as if a lorry on the horizon overrides their need to move back to the left for a spell.

How often are you presented with a solitary lorry in the distance in the South East between 8am and 8pm? Pretty rarely.

I love travelling in the inside lane, but I rarely get there.

  25. Moose

If you are going nearly 70 and the inside lane is busy (if it isn’t you should be in it) then you are expecting the driver behind to exceed the speed limit to pass you. I’d have been past you with a jaunty wave at 77mph, but I can’t criticise anyone else for not doing so.

I think it’s fundamentally wrong to be too concerned with other driver’s motivations when they are driving safely. Sure, if there are no other cars and someone is in the middle lane, that’s very annoying, but specifically creating obstacles for other cars to prove a point seems a bit odd. Best to drive defensively and keep others out of your head.

There should be a minimum speed limit on motorways when the traffic is flowing freely of 80mph. No maximum speed and it should be permitted to 'undertake' someone on the inside. Come on Shapps, what are you waiting for.

I'd add that if the traffic on the other side is relatively quiet, and your side is clogged up, you should be allowed to carefully use the under-utilised fast lane on the other carriageway if you drive with your hazzard lights on and give way to any oncoming traffic.

Does it suggest that all the rules are rubbish, all traffic management heads should be overthrown, and it hopes that everyone crashes just to prove a point ? If so, "yes".

Could it be adaptive cruise control?
If you have it and steering/lane assist I suspect the temptation would be to switch them on and sit in the middle lane then you dont have to worry about pedals and just have to rest a hand on the steering wheel and the car drives itself staying in lane at 70 but braking and staying a safe distance from the car infront when needed
