Planning to do a 130 mile round trip and a walk in the countryside but the tank is less than half full and not sure I have enough. Investigated four filling stations in the last three days, two of them closed, one selling diesel only, and one selling petrol with not too bad a queue (unfortunately I missed my opportunity as I walked there, and it was closed after 10:00 tonight). I give up.

And they say this could go on for a month, by which time the weather will be largely crap and it'll be dark by five - may sound hyperbolic but this feels nearly as bad as another lockdown.

My local garage had a delivery at 10 o'clock this morning and was sold out of E10 again by mid-afternoon. I've got enough petrol now for my trip to Watford for the Liverpool game, and won't use my car again before then just in case I can't get any more. Priorities.

I have to admit I passed a petrol station that was open so I nipped in to top up my tank and I could only fit in about 12 litres.

However in my defence I am making a longish journey today that will seriously deplete my tank, otherwise I probably would not have bothered with such a small top up.

  11. No problem buying fuel down this way

There were a couple of days of panic but by Tue-Wed it was all good

I'm happy to buy it here and ship water bottles of it up that way for a modest fee?

No worries. As I say it’s clever humour, so won’t appeal to everyone :).

Had three quarters of a tank and had to do about 30 miles yesterday, passed two petrol stations with no queues at all, a couple that were closed and a couple that were absolutely gridlocked with queues messing up the whole area. Was tempted to stop at one of the ones with no queues but thought better of it, as I’ve now got just under three quarters of a tank and only need to use my car once next week.

Have you heard of public transport? Given your username, I presume there are plenty of options where you live.

Also: you’re driving 130 miles for a walk in the country? Are you nuts?

130 mile round trip from London is just a walk around Winchester, or the Berkshire downs, Cambridge etc. That doesn’t seem wholly outrageous behaviour.

But you don’t have to go that far, surely? In current circumstances it would seem sensible to be less ambitious.

Cambridge and Winchester are easily accessible by train, too.

You do realise what you have done is part of the problem. There is no defence for going to get 12 litres

This was planned before the petrol shortage - there are many places even in the more populated southeast that are miles from the nearest train station and in some cases don’t even have a regular bus service (the North Downs, Surrey Hills, the Weald, much of the area around the Surrey/West Sussex/Berkshire/Hampshire borders). Using public transport considerably limits your options, as you’d know if you’d attempted many walks in the Lake District or indeed the Yorkshire Moors, which are presumably not far from where you live. Also I like driving and exploring the more unspoilt parts outside London. 130 miles there and back isn’t particularly long with an average of 65 each way and the abundance of fast roads out of London, and my limits are 200 miles (which anything is restrictive because it doesn’t get you as far as Norfolk or Somerset) and 20 miles for the walk itself.

I live in Bristol and come originally from Cornwall.

I don’t drive. You’re right, it’s tricky to get around in certain parts of the country without a car (Cornwall is one) but it’s OTT to say that the current situation is almost as bad as lockdown - there are plenty of nice places you can get to by train and/or bus, it just takes a bit of planning, flexibility and imagination.

Unless the buss is stuck in traffic queueing for petrol and the train driver couldn't get to work:D

So why do you call yourselves Keighley?

Shame you don't live there because if you went to today's debacle it would mean a short journey home to quickly forget about it all!

Happy bunny Cheered up a bit

I filled up the night before the media started the crisis, so I've been quite relaxed. I've driven past an open filling station twice at 10-11pm, so last night went to our nearest. Two cars ahead of me at the pump. At the same place the queue was building up nicely this morning.

Lessons from The Bunny: buy petrol at night; buy a central defender as soon as you can.

    True story this
Pulled up at Sainsbury's filling station Marshalswick . Straight on pump 4 .
Filled up the beast and paid my £1.57 in no time .
Well some of this is true .

My lawn mower is running low. What is the etiquette on filling up a Jerry can? Do I have to take my place at the back of the queue or can I just walk up to the first available pump? Should I take my mower with me to the garage? I don't want to get involved in a petrol rage incident and end up on BBC local news rolling around on the forecourt of my nearest Shell station with a panic buying looney who thinks I've pushed in

You have to take your mower, take your place at the back of the queue with the cars and film it for the forum
