As with Flores' time here, the results during the 2nd half of the season have been much poorer than during the first. Although taken as a whole, any season where enough points are accumulated to avoid relegation must be seen a target achieved, the recent trend is one of a team in decline. Owners and fans don't like that. Inevitable that the club and he would part ways.

I think they've made the decision before we turn City over 3-0, so we don't look stupid.

So, some substantive input then. I'm no fan of our ongoing, revolving-door, head coach situation. But I am a fan of Gino Pozzo's decisiveness when he knows something's broke so let's try and fix it then.

Who next? I like the cut of Silva's jib. Walter? A respectful clap, thanks for the minimalist memories and wave cheerio ...

    Some points:
    1. The players didn't feel he respected them. (Not saying the players arn't being precious for thinking that).
    2. He almost had a public fist fight with the keeper coach. He was regularly seen kicking 7 bells out of the dugout. Not the controlled manner you expect of a manager or coach.
    3. He was overheard on Monday night slagging Conte off. Almost immediate meeting called by GP & SD. Think that was last straw. Was going to happen anyway but ussually done after season end put of spotlight.
    4. Pozzo's will always have break clauses in contracts even if they give a public 3 year contract.

none of which would matter that much if we finished the season in the top 10. The fact we're no where near that is probably the main reason for his departure.

Its a shame. I had very high hopes at the start of the season, and after 5 games they looked justified. Things havn't progressed since then and our league form has suffered. I think his biggest failure was not learning the lingo. However he did keep us up, the players then downed tools and got their way as players tend to nowadays. Can't really help but feel a little bit sorry for him.

All the best Walter, I cannot doubt that you gave us your best. I hope you find future success in Italy.

I never really took to Mazzari, but neither did I hate him so my reaction to this is mostly "meh".

I don't think the head coach is the source of the issue though. We've now had obvious player "issues" under Zola, Beppe, QSF, and Mazzari. Joka seemed on the verge until the form picked up. Simply put, I think our problem is there is a deep-set rotten core of player ego embedded into the club and it's going to keep manifesting until ripped out. Bearing in mind that there aren't that many players still around the squad from the Zola era, it's either headed and stemming from a single individual or is just so systemic that new players are getting pulled into it when it arrives. Either way, it needs to be addressed, or the next guy and the one after him aren't going to have any more luck than the above list of former head coaches.

Ah yes, players revolted, but WHY??
Don't remember any revolting against GT, nor could I ever have imagined such a scenario.
Ok, players should not revolt, but they would not do it some kind of reason.

Ranieri seems too nice to handle our squad. We need a hard man (we had one) who can command respect (we didn't have one).

When you look back at this season, and see all the flaws and faults, you'll be amazed he lasted as long as he did. There will be other little gems coming out of the woodwork over what was going on behind the scenes, but like I've been saying all season. we've dodged a bullet this season. We stayed up in spite of not because of the coach.

Was he a monster? No, I actually think he was an incredibly insecure individual. You could tell that by his constant undermining of everyone's intelligence with his spin of a match. Always finding ridiculous excuses blaming everything but himself.

His training methods were probably responsible for Watford's injury crisis, which he often bemoaned about. His tactical nous and reading of a game was poor on many occasions. The defensive organisation was probably the worst I've seen from a Watford side in recent memory. It was comical at times.

There was no attachment with the fans. He did nothing to endear himself and was reluctant to speak English.

The football has been poor all season. Defensively na*ve and lack-lustre going forward. It was just a bloody mess really.

I had reservations right from the off, but you have to trust the people that make these appointments. It looked like a poor appointment to me, and this is how it worked out. I always felt he has not a good fit for Watford.

But finally it's sad to see someone lose his job, and ultimately everyone wanted him to work out, but he was just not good enough and not what we needed.

Am 100% sure you're right, next manager will have 36 month contract with rolling 30 day break clause. Other terms & conditions may apply, always read the label.

If that is the case and we get rid of one rotten core, only to find it is replaced by a different one, it means either (1) that is modern football and we just have to get on with it or (2) our recruitment policy is flawed and we are consistently recruiting bad apples

I rather fear it is number 1.
It reminds me of the Peter Sellers sketch " Lenny Goonigan". Nancy Lisbon asks "Is he down to earth?" The Svengali manager says "Well he's as normal as any ex plumber's mate earning 200 bob* a week"
If you were paid obscene amounts of money for kicking a football around once, possibly twice a week, you would probably think you were omnipotent!
Unfortunately to a large degree, this would appear to be the case!

If we get a tough manager like Sannino the players will start crying and collectively try to get rid. If we get a soft manager players will take no notice.

Don't envy the next one to come in.

Why would the so-called 'slagging off' of Conte mean anything to Gino? (That's if he did actually slag him off.) And of course QSF got binned in the week leading up to the final home game too.

Do we have a room with the photos of all our ex managers - if so is it a big room ?

Don't understand the press about our managers, was listening to talk sport, on one hand they are slagging of arsenal for having no ambition and then on the other hand can't understand why for a second year running we think a manger that barley kept us up needs to go , can't understand that our owners want someone who could push for a Europe league place

One thing that might be worth taking into account would be the current league table. 7 points separate 17th position and 8th position. Had our form over the last few games been even just slightly better, we'd be in line to earn millions more in prize money paid out according to league position. We sat in 10th not long ago. Dressing room problems aside, the current slump has cost us a lot of money.

  30. hornetboy1

    hornetboy1 First Team Captain

Exactly. With the league as it is this season, we could have easily finished 8th. Now we're looking at 17th......so that's a 9 place difference.....costing £18m.......that's a new player.

The attitude of that player is disgusting.

Having looked at the starting line up from that game and player ratings, its not hard to guess who the senior player it:

    Gomes (8), Mariappa (6), Prodl (6), Britos (6), Janmaat (6), Cleverley (6), Doucoure (5), Capoue (7), Amrabat (5), Deeney (5), Niang (5).
