He really screwed up his career. He shouldn't have moved from our academy to Villa's academy but that was ultimately the fault of whoever was advising him. He then lands on his feet eventually at Brentford and does really well but narrowly misses out on promotion to the Champ with them. He then makes the stupid decision to leave Brentford for newly-promoted Doncaster where they were always going to go down to League 1- to add salt to the wound, Brentford takes Doncaster's place in the Championship. He then falters with Donny in League 1 for a couple of seasons and now might get a career rejuvenation by linking up with his former gaffer Warburton at Rangers.

What a step down from Villa to Rangers.

Yea, I agree, although the thing with Rangers is that if he does well there is a chance he could be in Europe in a couple of seasons and maybe catch someone's eye there

The irony is that, when he left us, being told he'd end up playing for Rangers probably would have convinced him he was making the right decision!

I doubt it - who was the last attacking player to leave Celtic for a big team? Gary Hooper moving to Norwich is all I can think of, which sums up the state of the Scottish leagues. Their best two defensive players in the last few years have been Wanyama and van Dijk, who both got a big move to Southampton.

Why does it have to be only 'attacking' players?

As you said, in the last few years its only been a few players, such as Van Dijk, Wanyama, Adam Matthews and Joe Ledley (an attacking player).

However, with Rangers back in the SPL, and Hearts and Hibs back to being competitive, the league itself will be more competitive which will lead to more investment, and a return to the higher standard of 5 or so years ago, when plenty of players left the SPL for England and Europe: Boyd, Miller, Lovenkrands, Naismith, Jelavic, Davis, Larsson, Ferguson, Burke, Whittaker, Hutton, etc... its quite a long list!

The last attacking player to leave Scotland for a big team after catching someone's eye was Mo Johnson

Still got their chance at the top level after playing for Scotland.

Because Forrester is an attacking player and it allows for a reasonable comparison. I assumed that was fairly self-explanatory.

You're basing your conclusions on a lot of 'ifs', and on players that moved such a long time ago that they are clearly no longer relevant in this discussion. Using Joe Ledley as your shining example of an attacking player who has moved up after leaving Celtic hardly helps your argument, given that he's deployed defensively for Palace (when he can get on the pitch). I can also only assume that you included Chris Burke for the irony.

Maybe we'll have this conversation again in five years time, when Harry Forrester has led Rangers to the Champions League group stages for a second consecutive season and is snapped up by high-flying Watford in the Premier League. Or maybe not.

Reading manager Brian McDermott on Matej Vydra, following their 1-0 win over Bristol City (where Nick Blackman scored a 90th minute winner).

Two thoughts: Firstly, I wonder if he'd have said this if they hadn't won the game. Secondly, does it seem a bit like an attempt to appease the fans who are presumably disappointed with his impact?

There is no doubt about it, Rangers will be in the SPL again, either next season, or the one after (If Hibs go up instead this season). This will obviously lead to increased revenue for the SPL as the Old Firm will return and again, its only a matter of time before Rangers are in Europe. In m eyes that isn't an if at all.

The players mentioned are all players from SPL seasons which included Rangers, which was the whole basis of my original comment. Obviously I can't include players from the past few seasons as Rangers have been in L2/L1/Championship. I assumed that was pretty self-explanatory. I also explained that the absence of Rangers from the SPL has had a huge detrimental affect on Celtic, hence why their players aren't moving to better clubs as much. (They have gone from great European nights (ie beating Barca) to embarrassing themselves in Europe). Obviously, with Rangers in the SPL this would change.

And it doesn't matter where a player plays, if they play well enough, they will get purchased. Only talking about the lack of offensive players making the move is just stupid. And I never said the players who moved have played well, I said they played well in the SPL and got their chance in the PL. Some took it well, like Davis, some didn't, like Hooper.

And finally, I also didn't say Forrester will be a guaranteed success. I argued that his career move made sense, as if he stays with Rangers for a few seasons he will have more chance of being spotted by better clubs. Doncaster aren't going to be much more than a yo-yo club for the foreseeable future.

Well, it is an 'if'; it may be likely, but it's not guaranteed and it's certainly not proven. By definition, it is 'if'.

To be honest, I don't really see the point in carrying on with this because (a) I don't actually care that much and (b) you seem to be ignoring the majority of my justifications in order to suit your argument. Like I said, maybe we'll have this conversation again in a few years, when we can discuss this with hindsight and actual facts.

Watch their goal, he literally sprints half the way back makes a great slide tackle from behind and then gets an assist. It was pretty impressive.

Absolutely - he did similar for us on occasion last season. I think Millwall away was one of them?

I still wonder whether he's trying to garner support for Vydra by placing so much emphasis on speaking about him. Their fans have been critical of him, pointing out his involvement in the goal could placate some of them.

An assist against a sh!te Bristol City won't spell out his season .... and somehow I imagine McDermott is going to be asking for a refund.

Vydra did well to work his opportunity to shoot but a massive deflection took it in. And Fabbrini was about 2 yards out.

Great goal by Forestieri tonight. 11 in 20 games now for Wednesday. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but surely he could have offered more than Diamanti, Ibarbo, Berghuis and Oulare? Probably would have been happy being a back up too given that that's the role he had for most of his time here...

In hindesight FF might well have been able to fill the backup striker position we are currently seeking, but he had not shown that while he was still with us, therefore I don't think we got it wrong selling him.

I'm really pleased the lad is doing so well at Sheff W, and who knows if he can keep it up we might even go back in for him in a season or two, and I reckon he might just want to come back.

In the meantime good luck to him :sign15:

The problem is, he scores a goal which the keeper should have done better with, and the fanboys start chirping.

If he doesn't score, then we don't hear a peep out of them.

Let's just keep this one to discussing how well he's doing and let the trolls argue with each other about whether he should be in the team on the other one.

Well he had a mid-season slump with us when in form so is bound to have one when not playing well!

Very strange how a player can go from unbelievably clinical to 'can't hit a barn door' practically overnight. Torres was the one that completely baffled me - what a player he was. Until he wasn't.

  34. Legends

The thing is Vydra did this with us as well for 2 seasons. Can't see why either him or anyone else expects differently.
If ever the term purple patch expresses a players period of form it's the 12/13 season he had with us for the first 2/3 of it. Then BANG average.
Since then he has been just as effective as any other mediocre championship striker.
Deeney was right, Deeney was always the foil.
