I agree with the bit highlighted but would also add; A public & definite 'Not For Sale' means we can hopefully get some value for money for any incomings in this window. Buy whoever we're after and then I can see a £30/35m plus add-ons deal being made.
Surely doesn't matter how much we think we can hold out for - if he wants to go, he'll go. More than quadruple his wages and be part of the PL's "next big thing". Or stay and do Rotherham away.
That was his release clause plus they only had 6 points at the time so we’re a lot more desperate and obviously wanted to stay in the league, it also weakened a relegation rival at the same time so not as much as it seems on the face of it. but other than him they’ve had a set price in mind for a player and if the club demand anymore they just move on to someone else. Saudi Arabia/PIF may be many things but I don’t think they’re stupid.
Really don’t see us selling him unless we’re offered a stupid amount, which would be £50mil+. Bottom line is he’s our star boy, only 20, is contracted until 2027 with a one year option on top of that. We don’t need the money. Promotion is worth a lot more than what Newcastle are willing to pay. The ball is in our court. We will only sell on our terms, it won’t be close to anything Newcastle offer.
Not this season. We’ve made more than enough through other players sales, wages off the books and parachute payments. This season we are fine. That’s why we don’t need the money. Next summer if we’re still in the championship is when we wait to sell Pedro. No need to sell him this window.
All very well, but we risk him having a bang average championship year or an injury. Given our overall financial state if we get £30m we would be foolish not to take it even if we have plugged the gap for a single year.
Would anyone be interested in Chris Wood as part of the package somehow? Like a season loan? I’m not saying instead of £5m, I’m saying if the level of money you’d be happy with was reached, and he was the Cherry on top? Would he fit the system at all?
We aren’t desperate this moment for the money ASAP. But you simply cannot say we don’t need the money. And whether we like it or not, we are a Championship team and by default he’s a Championship player. £35m - £40m and a player who would like the move and it would get done. No way will we be getting north of £50m for him. I doubt we’d get that if we survived last season and he scored 12-15 goals. You just can’t ignore who we are and what the money will do for us. You can only ignore the money to a certain level. £20m - fine. But it’s just common sense to accept that nearly double that will sway all parties.
£30mil?? Glad you’re not in charge, no offence. Everton want £50mil for Gordon, noway is anyone telling me that Pedro isn’t a much better player than him with a much higher ceiling. Yes that’s a risk. The other side to that coin is that Pedro has a phenomenal season with 15 goals and 10 assists, making his value shoot up regardless of promotion, so next summer we will get even more. So in my opinion it would be foolish to sell him this summer unless it’s a stupid amount like £50mil+.
Don’t rate him anymore - a couple of seasons ago maybe, but he’s on the decline. Plus he wouldn’t operate well with Davis. He may fit Edwards to a point but Davis fits it better I think. Also…wages.
Don’t get me wrong I love JP but I reckon an unconditional £30m gets it done in our currrent circumstances.
Yes money talks and heads get turned but if the club want to get promoted and aren’t skint as they say then we need to keep Sarr/Perdo and certainly one of them at least . Probably end up being Sarr as no one seems ready to make a bid for him .
Sarr is still the most irreplaceable for me. His extra touch of quality was what fundamentally made the difference in getting us the points in the first 2 games.
You always look on the positive side and never the negative. He’s a skilful prospect who doesn’t score a lot and doesn’t create a lot. He might become a real star or he might become a bang average champ player worth £5-10m. We have cut our cost base to minimise losses this year and raised some funds to reduce debts but we have along way to go. The sale of Dennis helps but we will need to pretty confident of promotion or selling Sarr & Pedro for significant sums in the future if we don’t sell now. All of the above before considering that the player may want to go. I would expect us to sell if the bidding gets to £30m. Gordon has shown far more promise than Pedro and is playing in the prem for a prem side.
I was with you right until the end. Playing for a PL side or not, Gordon has not shown more promise than Joao Pedro, let alone ‘far more.’ Joao Pedro is the superior player. Goals aside, JP was high in the attacking stats last season for the entire division (way ahead of Gordon in comparable metrics) and that’s for us in the position we were in! Then couple that with the season before where Joao Pedro was good at just 18-19 in the Championship getting promoted - whereas Gordon looked average on loan at Preston. If we truly are as financially secure as Duxbury makes out (!) - and we both have our doubts which is why we think the price would be lower than Markoa$ - then whatever Everton are suggesting is the price for Gordon, then we should not only be at least matching that but quoting more in all honesty.
But anyone saying £50m+ needs to calm down. Joao Pedro has a huge amount of potential - but Richarlison went for a similar amount and he’s got more top division experience, more goal threat, 36 caps, 14 goals - JP doesn’t even get into the Brazil U21’s/U23’s at present.
I think we’ll ask for a package worth around £40m, although some of that will come in instalments/ sell on fees etc. If Newcastle are serious and aren’t just lowballing/ bargain hunting, he’s gone.
Yes maybe the “shown more promise” comment wasn’t fair, but we both know Everton would get more for selling their most promising youngster than championship Watford would get for selling ours. I’m sure SD would clearly want to paint a more rosy picture of our finances than is the case to both allay concerns and also boost bargaining position. He will know how big an issue repaying that loan could be and whether £30m is just too good to turn down. The question is just how good will Pedro become and how key is he to promotion this season. Happy to be in a minority view here but I don’t think he scores enough goals as a striker or creates enough chances for others. Just my view, and maybe stats show that view is incorrect?
He's a tough one to assess. I think his biggest attribute for his age is just how rounded his game is. The question is whether he'll ever have enough about his game to be a regular at a top 4 club, and I'm not convinced
Your honour, in the case of Joao Pedro to Newcastle, I would like to draw the court’s attention to the precedent set by Fabio Silva to Wolverhampton Wanderers: One must therefore surmise that a far more accomplished and talented individual, such as Joao Pedro, would be worth - at a minimum - somewhere in the region of 40 million pounds. I rest my case.
Dont want JP to go but any bids north of £30 million + add ons will be hard to turn down, massive profit for the club. I have roots in Newcastle and the Geordies would love him for his skill and work ethic. I think he needs one more season with us but if the money is right..........
