The problem with having money this late in the window to sign replacements is everyone knows you’re desperate and have the money burning a hole in your pocket.
I think we will hold out for a significant fee around what we got for Richarlison, obviously Newcastle are a long way off that yet, but the worry is a) they very much can get that high, and b) why would they bid for him in the first place if they didn't want him?
I think Newcastle have bid for a few players this summer and walked away. They have the money but aren't letting clubs take the piss with valuations. I'd say £35m plus some healthy add ons would get him but why sell now? In January he becomes homegrown so he'll automatically become a £50m player overnight.
He’s already at a similar level than Richarlison was in his season here (on a consistent basis at least, Richarlison was unbelievable in some games but then dreadful), is younger and also will be homegrown in January. Seeing a £40m get rejected for Anthony Gordon surely has to push any potential price even higher
Money talks and heads get turned but if the club want to get promoted and aren’t skint as they say then we need to keep Sarr/Perdo and certainly one of them at least .
I'll be honest I have no idea how Newcastle are playing this season. I see Eddie has apparently had enough of Saint-Maximin though.
I’ve heard he’s a bad influence in the dressing room and the players can’t wait to see the back of him, according to tomorrows Daily Mail anyway.
Hard to know how good he's going to get. Not at Richarlison level yet but could get there. Does have a certain X factor about him even if he's not prolific. No idea how to price him but £25m is a lot for a young player. However.... the one player from our squad I'd be gutted to see leave. Personally I'd want £30m for him so I don't cry for more than a month.
Too cheap. Too late in the window. Can't see JP kicking up a fuss to go in there. If it was a London or Manchester club, then maybe if the price is right. A move to Newcastle now is not right for JP or the club.
There's no circumstance where going to a PL team who are pretty certain to be top half isn't right for JP
Let's be real, you'd be absolutely mental to accept the first bid from 'money bags' Newcastle, even if it was a really good offer!! Let's see how much Newcastle want him. £45m at a minimum with a sell-on!
Two interesting comments by Newcastle supporters in the Athletic: "Sounds like another derisory bid that wasn't followed up. Been a common theme since Ashworth got involved. Not coming across well at all (from the info that's being leaked to us)." "Just like the Harrison, Gordon, Maddison bids/enquiries it's another that obviously wasn't going to be accepted. If we followed those up with more realistic bids it would be fine, but we're not (or it's not being reported). This tactic just seems weird and, to me, makes the club look disrespectful." João Pedro will be 21 years old in September. I do not understand why he would qualify as a homegrown player in January because he will have been training and playing here for less than three years before his 21st birthday. Have I misunderstood the rule?
£17.5m seems a deliberate ploy to get Joao to kick up a fuss. They must have known that was nowhere near where we value him
They are not going to go away quietly. If Newcastle really want him, we just got to see how high they are prepared to bid. Gino’s ship has really come in during this window. Fabrizio Romano Newcastle are pushing to sign João Pedro from Watford. New proposal expected ‘soon’ after opening bid rejected, as @skysports_sheth called today. ⚪️⚫️ #NUFC Been told first proposal was £20m plus £3m add-ons. Newcastle will try again soon.
Dharmesh Sheth said - a few moments ago - on Sky Sports that Newcastle's offer is now believed to have been only £17.5 million.
If Anthony Gordon is worth £50m, then Joao Pedro is worth more than £45m… I don’t think a club like Watford will really ever realise a fee for over £50m. I think £40m would get him as we could pay down a lot of debt with that, and maybe sign the other Brazilian lad with a quarter of the money. But as much money as they have, Newcastle are unlikely to double their offer so I expect he will stay. But even if he stays, scores 25 goals and then scores 15 in the PL next season should we get there, I doubt we would see more than £40m-£50m regardless. The thing is, Newcastle may be trying to low ball us to unsettle the player - but that only works for big clubs. A bigger concern would be that other better clubs have been monitoring Joao Pedro and fear missing out now, so they bid and do manage to unsettle him. Today tells me that Joao Pedro is known to bigger and better clubs - whereas some of us, myself included, felt he was going under the radar.
